Published in 1984, this was The Smiths first album release. Produced by John Porter this album provides classics such as "This Charming Man" and "Still Ill." Their first release was "Reel Around The Fountain," first heard nationally, courtesy to a John Peel session on BBC Radio 1.
The song "Suffer Little Children" (based on the Crimes of Mara Hindley and the grief felt by the victims' parents) caused much controversy, mainly Because critics were perhaps afraid of the gritty reality that was being portrayed. However, the song can be argued to be a metaphor for "Lest We Forget."
