A week after finding the Civil War diary, Garcia came home from work and kicked off his shoes. “I need a vacation.” He muttered. He grabbed the newspaper and started to read about the past basketball game. A few minutes later, Cranberry came in and grabbed the newspaper from Garcia.
“What are you doing?” She asked.
“Reading the paper.” He said, trying to grab the sports section out of her hands.
“Let’s go somewhere!” She complained, waving the Basketball headline in front of his face.
“I do need a vacation.” He said.
“Then let’s go somewhere!” She complained.
“Ok, we can, just give me that Newspaper!” Garcia reached up and grabbed it out of Cranberry’s hands.
She smiled and let go of it.
The next day, Garcia grabbed a newspaper from a local hotel. He was about to leave, but he discovered a display of assorted brochures. Remembering his promise to Cranberry, he grabbed 1 of every brochure and stuffed them into his coat pocket. When he got home, he showed them to her.
“Oh, look at this!” She said, picking up a brochure.
“Skiing!” She sighed. “I haven’t been skiing in awhile.”
Garcia bit his lip. He didn’t know how to ski! It had always been warm in Drum Island… what if he messed up? Not only would he be humiliated, but he also would be humiliated in front of Cranberry! But, he agreed. After all, trip to the mountains wouldn’t be too bad for him.
Grabbing his suitcase, Garcia rushed to the car, and hopped into the front seat. Erin grabbed the steering wheel, and Cranberry and Val climbed inside the car. Cranberry, Erin and Val were all happy. But Garcia hung with a sense of dread. How could he ever face those immense mountains? Awhile later, Garcia finished his book and grabbed his diary from his backpack.
Dear Diary,
I’m in the car, going to the mountains, to ski. I think I’ll probably just sightsee. I’m not a big skier. I tried once, but I ended up almost breaking my ankle. Cranberry is real excited. We’re getting in the mountains now! But Val said that this was just the “foothills”. They look like mountains to me. He pointed out some “real mountains”. He showed me the one he was going to ski on. It looks dangerous. Then again, I did live in Hollywood for awhile. The land of fake movie stunts. I’m not used to real danger. Oh, cool. We’re stopping. I really need to stretch.
See You,
Garcia
Garcia climbed out of the car and held his arms way up to the sky. That was about all he needed, so he climbed back into the car and sighed. It wouldn’t be long until they got to the mountains.
When Garcia climbed out of the car, he stretched and smiled. He grabbed the cabin keys from Val’s hand and ran to open the cabin. As soon as he opened the door, he gasped. The place was beautiful! He couldn’t believe that the place was theirs. For the week, anyways. He could hardly wait!
The next morning, Garcia woke up and opened the door to a blizzard. Well, at least he TRIED to open the door. It ended up only opening it about a quarter of an inch. Quickly, he closed it before the snow blew inside.
“Great. JUST great.” Sighing, he fixed a mug of hot choclate for everyone and a mug of hot coffee for himself. Sipping his coffee, he turned on the TV. A picture of the world of white outside appeared, followed by a beanie reading a news report.
“All school in the city of Gail and surrounding mountain cities have been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.” He said.
“No duh.” Garcia said. The door to the log cabin flung open, and Garcia whirled around. Standing there, in the frost-bitten doorway, was…
“Daydream?” Garcia said.
