Vibrato Lesson 1

There are a few things you can do to improve on your bends. bends are cool,but adding a vibrato to them, really brings out the feeling!
I would say to practise your vibrato (like you would a scale,or riff)
sit there and shake the string in many different ways, there are so many different types of vibrato,
and to learn them is a great way to reach that next step!
I mainly use a wide vibrato in my bends, sometimes i bend the note, then wait a few seconds,
then shake the hell out of it - to get the emotion im going for (David Gilmore does this trick)

*Here is a good way to try using different vibratos:
==================================================================
Pick a scale, lets say? ...

E F# G A B C D

(anywhere on the neck, can be any scale too)
and choose how "wide" you want to use your vibrato depending on where it is in the scale like this:

Example 1.
lets pick the "F#", now the next note in the scale is "G". so make sure you vibrate(shake) the note in half steps,
so that the highest bend in that vibrato is a "G "(12th fret)
(see example 1)

Example 2.
now try the "G" in that scale, since the "A" (14th fret) is a full step above, make sure you shake it in full steps like this:
(see example 2)

Example 3
When you want to bend the note and add vibrato, the same idea applies:
==========================================================
Start at the 15th fret (D) Then bend it a Full step to E (17th fret)
O.K, while your at the "E" note (17th fret),the next note in the scale is "F#", so shake the string in full step intervals so that the highest note is "F#"
(See example 3):

---------------Example 1-------------Example 2----------------Example 3

And so on... throughout the scale(s)

==========================================================================
This is just one way of adding that extra touch to your playing,...

I know this isnt the most exciting excericse, ...but it could possible be the most important to your style as a player!

I remember Steve Vai saying in a guitar magazine a while ago, that a really good excerise is to hold one note for a half hour to an hour
and try MANY different vibratos with that one note!,
its VERY boring, but it really helps you learn to be great at it!

Trust me, if you practise this for one month - you will notice a difference!
then at anytime you want to "spice up" your bends, its there!

I can show you more tricks in the future (I'll Post "ghost slide vibrato's" next - thats just what i call them :)
Have fun,

**Stay tuned!**
