An introduction to microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Major areas considered are morphology, physiology, genetics and pathology. Micobes are studied in relation to soil, water, food, industrial processes and disease. Two hour lab. Writing enhanced.Sam Houston Honor Code

Students will refrain from behavior in the classroom that intentionally or unintentionally disrupts the learning process and, thus, impedes the mission of the university. Please turn off or mute your cellular phone and/or pager before class begins. Students are prohibited from eating in class, using tobacco products, making offensive remarks, reading newspapers, sleeping, talking among each other at inappropriate times, wearing inappropriate clothing, or engaging in any other form of distraction. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom shall result in a, minimally, a directive to leave class or being reported to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action in accordance with university policy.Exams
There will be two exams, each is worth 20% of your final grade (40% total). Exam dates and material are subject to change. If you miss an exam, a written excuse must be presented before a make-up exam will be administered. Makeup exams will only be given up to 2 days after the original exam date. No exams will be dropped. There will be no extra credit available.Quizzes
There will be 13 online quizzes that total 10% of your grade. Each quiz will correspond to the chapters on the syllabus and are due the night before the scheduled lecture. Quizzes for each chapter are online at The Microbiology Place. Click the Microbiology: An Introduction photo and log on with your access code from the front of your book. Click the corresponding chapter from the dropdown box at the top of the page and select practice tests and multiple choice. After you've completed the quiz, fill in the box at the bottom of the page to send it to my email (kwunch@shsu.edu or bio_kgw@shsu.edu). Make sure your fulll name is include when you send the e-mail.Class Paper
There will be a 3-5 page paper due on August 5th and will be worth 20% of your grade. Details about the paper will given in class.Final Exam
The final exam is cumulative and will be worth 30% of your grade. If you miss the final, a written excuse must be presented before a make-up exam wil be administered. There will be no extra credit available.Cummulative Grade
The lecture and lab will be combined for a final grade. To calculate your final grade, the lecture grade will be multiplied by 3 (for 3 hours) and the lab by 1 (for 1 hour) and the scores averaged together for a total of 4 credit hours.Grading Policy

According to University policy requests for accommodations must be initiated by the student. A student seeking accommodations should go to the Counseling Center and Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) in a timely manner. Every semester that the student desires accommodations, it is the student's responsibility to complete a Classroom Accommodation Request Form at the SSD office and follow the stated procedure in notifying faculty. Accommodations for disabled students are decided based upon documentation and need on a case-by-case basis by the Counseling Center.Religious Holidays
University policy states that a student who is absent from class for the observance of a religious holy day to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. The student, not later than the 15th calendar day after the first day of the semester, or the 7th calendar day after the first day of a summer session, must notify the instructor of each scheduled class that he/she would be absent for a religious holy day (Faculty Handbook, §§1.02-2.01).
