Functional conflict results when two or more parties are in disagreement, but are actively trying to come to a solution through their actions/words. Functional conflict becomes disfunctional when the conflict is no longer productive towards resolution. Actions taken and words spoken are no longer aiding in solving the problem or moving forward. Disfunctional conflict can include unneccessary violence, name-calling, etc.
