 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him,
35 That day when evening came,
22 One day "
  
    he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.
 he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side."
 Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake."  
    23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.
 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. So they got into a boat and set out.
  
      There were also other boats with him.
    
    24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.
 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
 23(b) A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

    But Jesus was sleeping. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. 23(a)As they sailed, he fell asleep.  
    25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
 The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
3		 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!"  
    26(b) Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
 9 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
"		 He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.
  
    26(a)He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" 40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples.  
    27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him! 41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him! In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him

a) This account of the calming of the storm is a clear representation of the Literary differences inherent in the gospels. The three authors are obviously recounting the same story, but with radically different angles. The amount of difference is a sign that the authors were not inspired by one another, but instead with such differences they are individual works.

b)Matthew slants his account toward Jesus' diety. Mark is a detail freak and seems to be trying to set about to explain how this could all come about (except for the calming of the sea). And Luke is trying to keep us up on the story with some detail, but more specifically (it seems) a historical accounting of events.

 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, 5:1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.

 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,
 
        which is across the lake from Galilee.
  
    two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. .
 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town.  
    They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
      
      3 This man lived in the tombs, For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.

and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.

      4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.

    "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
 Swear to God that you won't torture me!"
 I beg you, don't torture me!"
  
      8 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"
 29(a) For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man.  
      9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."
 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him.
  
      10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
  
    30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside.  
    31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."
 12 The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."
 The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them,  
    32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. and he gave them permission.
33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, 		 
    and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.

      9 Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
 Jesus sent him away, saying,
39(a) "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." 		 
        37(b)So he got into the boat and left.  
      20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed. 39(b)So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

a) The accounts begin with a staggering difference, the place where Jesus set in to port. Matthew holds that it was Gadarenes, while Mark and Luke seem to put forth a the point as Gerasenes. It has in recent times been noted though that the reference in some older manuscripts do have the Matthew text as matching up with the other two, while other older Manuscripts don't. This is more than likely a transcription error.

b) The next significant difference is the number of men that "accost" Jesus. Mark and Luke tend to record it as one man, while Matthew records it as two. This is not a difficulty though, as it could well have been two men, but Mark and Luke tended to focus on the more outspoken and powerful of the two.

c) Outside of the above differences, there is little difference in the stories, except in regard to length and recorded details. Matthew pushes through the story and ends it quickly. Mark seems to take time to indicate the power and behavior of the demon possesed man. Luke as always remains the historian of the group. He (Luke) records the circumstances of the demoniac and the ensuing encounters, but he also gives us a puposeful indication that this land is gentile. (Presumably, as an indication of Jesus' desire to help all people groups, as that would be a concern for his (Luke's) audience.)

 18 While he was saying this, a ruler came and knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live."
19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.
21 She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed."
22 Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.
23 When Jesus entered the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd,
24 he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him.
25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
26 News of this spread through all that region.
 21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet
23 and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."
24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."
29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"
31 "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'"
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?"
36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe."
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
39 He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."
40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").
42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
 40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.
41 Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house
42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.
43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her.
44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you."
46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me."
47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.
48 Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more."
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother.
52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep."
53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.
54 But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!"
55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.
56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
