Chapter One
It is a nice spring day in England. Sophie is on her way to the airport to pick up some of her friends from the states. She is excited because she is picking up her friend Kris whom she’s corresponded through instant messenger for a while. Kris is bringing Chris and Joey with her. They are their boyfriends. They were also bringing their friend JC with them because he didn’t have anything else better to do.
As soon as they saw each other, Kris and Sophie run towards each other and squeal like girls normally do. The guys are just standing back and watching them. Sophie takes everyone back to her house after they all got their bags from baggage claim.
Kris and Sophie decide to talk downstairs while the guys take naps upstairs to recover from the flight.
“You know, I was surprised when you told me you were able to come over. How did you get the money?” Sophie starts.
“Chris paid for me. Well, in more ways than one.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’m working for him now at the record company. And since I don’t have enough money in my bank account, he paid for me.”
“When did this happen? You never told me about this.”
“A couple weeks ago. I didn’t tell you because I wanted it to be a surprise.”
“That’s cool.” Suddenly, Sophie starts to look depressed.
“What’s wrong?” Kris urges.
“I’ve got something to tell you and I don’t think you’re going to like it.”
“What is it?”
“Kris, I’m pregnant.”
“Whoa, have you told Joey and Chris?”
“No.”
“Why not? One of them needs to know if they’re going to be a father or not.”
“I haven’t told them because it’s not theirs.”
“If it’s not theirs, then whose is it?”
“It’s JC’s.”
“What? When did this happen?”
“It happened a couple weeks ago. JC was over here on holiday and we hooked up. And if I tell Chris and Joey, they’ll never forgive me.”
“Then how come you told me?”
“Because I knew you would be understanding.”
“Well congratulations then.”
“Don’t be congratulating me. I’m going to have an abortion because it would ruin JC’s career if I had it and I wouldn’t know what to do.”
“You know JC would never let you do that.”
“I know. That’s why I’m not going to tell him.”
“Why not? He needs to know.”
“I’m just not going to tell him.” Kris just stares at her in disbelief.
“You need to tell him sooner or later. He’s just as understanding as I am.”
“Fine. I’ll tell him. But I’m still going to get rid of it no matter what he says.”
“Fine. As long as you tell him.”
They leave the conversation like that and talk about other things.
After dinner that night, Sophie takes JC aside to tell him.
“What do you mean you’re leaving me? I thought we had something here.”
“We do, but neither of us is ready to have a baby and you guys are just getting back into the studio to record and having a baby right now would ruin both our lives and careers. I’m sorry JC.”
“Soph, how many times do I have to tell you that we’ll work through everything?”
“Jayce, it’s not that easy. Having a baby would ruin your career when it was just getting together. I won’t let you do that and I’m not ready for it.”
Sophie turns and picks up her car keys and heads off towards her car. JC runs after her.
“Soph, wait.”
“No JC. I need to get out of here. I need time to myself.”
Before she can get into her car, she doubles over in pain and clutches her car door.
“Sophie, what’s wrong?” JC asks as he catches her.
“Take me to the hospital JC.” She says in pain.
As soon as JC picks her up, blood is starting to leak through her jeans and onto his hand.
Everybody is now in the waiting room at the local hospital. JC is pacing around and is beginning to get very antsy.
“JC, will you knock it off. You’re making me dizzy.” Chris tells him.
“Sorry.” He says as he sits down.
The doctor walks in and explains what had happened.
“What happened to her?” JC asks.
“Sophie had a miscarriage and she also lost quite a bit of blood in the process as well.”
“What do you mean miscarriage? You mean she was pregnant?” Joey slowly asks.
“Exactly.”
Chris and Joey remain silent. Kris pipes up next.
“Is she going to be all right?”
“She should be if she doesn’t lose anymore blood.”
“Can we go see her?” JC asks.
“Yes, but only for a few moments.”
The doctor takes them all to Sophie’s room and leaves them alone. By this time, Chris and Joey know about Sophie and JC being together so they both hang around Kris.
A little while later, Sophie wakes up.
“What happened?” she asks as her eyes finally focus.
“You lost the baby Sophie.” JC flatly answers.
Sophie turns her head to the side and starts to cry softly. She tells them all to get out of her room after a few minutes. When they all went out of the room, JC stays by the window and watches her. Sophie gets out of the bed and when she starts to stand up, she has a terrible feeling over come her and she collapses. All of a sudden, these alarms begin to sound and doctors and nurses begin to file into her room. JC stands there without being able to do anything. He watches all the doctors and nurses do their jobs. He starts to sing “God Must’ve Spent (A Little More Time on You)” in the hallway.
“Sophie, don’t leave me, please.” He whispers to himself.
The doctor comes out a few minutes later and he notices JC standing there. It is the same doctor as before.
“What happened?” JC asks.
“Her blood clot ruptured and she lost quite a bit of blood. We need to give her a transfusion.” The doctor leaves and comes back a few minutes later.
After the transfusion is over and the doctors and nurses finally leave, JC enters the room and sits next to her. He starts to sing again and this time Sophie hears it. She opens her eyes and starts to talk.
“How did you know that was my favorite song, JC?”
“I didn’t. I just thought it seemed right.”
JC starts to hold her hand and rub her forehead.
“Please, don’t touch me JC.” She asks.
“Why? Did I hurt you?” he says backing off.
“No. I just want to be left alone right now.”
“Why do you keep pushing me away?”
“Because I don’t want to hurt you.” She says tearfully.
JC lowers his head trying to digest what she is telling him.
“JC, tell the others I’m sorry. I didn’t want any of you guys to find out about this, but Kris made me do it.”
“Good thing she did too. We all care for you and if you hadn’t told us, we would be lost and confused because we wouldn’t know what was going on.”
JC gets up from his chair and heads towards the door.
“I’m going to tell the guys what happened and let you rest now.”
Sophie nods and turns the other direction. JC leaves the room and goes to tell Joey and the Chris’s what happened.
The next day, JC, Joey, and the Chris’s all return to the hospital to check on Sophie. JC is the one that goes to her room first. As he approaches her room, he sees a clutter of doctors and nurses surrounding Sophie and working on her.
JC’s eyes grow huge as he whispers, “No. She can’t do this to me.” One of the nurses comes out to lead him away.
“I’m her boyfriend. What happened?” JC asks.
“She had a relapse. The clot broke again.” Then the nurse hurries to the nurse’s station.
JC just stands there and listens to the sounds around him. After a few seconds, he hears the heart monitor register that continuous sound of flat lining. Sophie’s heart had stopped. He has been holding his breath almost the entire time. He lets it out as he feels the pressure in his lungs. Suddenly, the heart monitor begins to beep again with a rhythm. Sophie begins to stir and whimper. The doctor is staring at her because she was clinically dead for a few moments. As soon as JC hears the monitor beep again, he raises his head and sees her moving. The doctor examines her and determines that her blood level has returned on its own.
“I want to talk to JC.” Sophie whispers.
“Is that him at the window?” the doctor asks.
Sophie looks at the window and gives a slight nod to the doctor. The doctor walks out and tells JC to enter the room. JC walks over to the side of Sophie’s bed.
“I’m here Soph.” JC tells her stroking her hair.
“Jayce, help me.” She whispers.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Comfort me please.” Her eyes begin to flutter.
JC holds her as he starts to sing in her ear. She looks over his shoulder and smiles.
“Ummm Jayce, I love you.” She tells him.
“I love you too Soph.” He says as he leans in for a kiss. Sophie leans in closer and tilts her head slightly. JC kisses her very passionately on her lips. She doesn’t respond to the kiss. She pulls away closing her eyes. JC checks for a pulse and breathes a sigh of relief when he finds one.
“Jayce, I’m not dying. I just need to tell you that I’m sorry. I should’ve looked after myself more with the baby and all.” She says slowly opening her eyes.
“I’m sorry too. Just promise me you’ll never leave me.”
Sophie starts to sing “This I Promise You” and then starts to chuckle.
“I’ll let you rest while I go tell the others what happened.”
“I don’t want to rest. I want to stay with you.”
“I’ll be right back. I’m not leaving.”
“I hope not.”
“I won’t go.”
“I can’t be sure of that.”
JC pulls up the chair next to her.
“I’m sitting down and I’m staying. Do you want me to pinky swear or something?”
“I mean when we get home. How can I be sure when you leave for work that you will come back?”
“Because I never go back on my promises.” JC starts to sing “I’ll Be There” by the Jackson 5.
“But Jayce, how can I be sure because why would you want to be with a girl who can’t even keep a baby?” Sophie protests.
“Because I love you. Besides, we can always try again after a while. But we both have to be ready for it.”
“Jayce, I have to tell you something the doctor told me before you came in.”
“What?”
“We can’t try again.”
JC looks sad as he receives this news.
“Oh. Well, we could always adopt.”
“No Jayce. I’m not going to adopt a kid.”
“Why not? There are plenty out there that need a good home. We’ll be able to give them a good home.”
“I don’t want to adopt. I wanted to have my own babies with you.”
“Maybe there’s a way.”
“No, there’s no way at all. The doctor told me.”
“What about fertilization treatments?”
“No, I totally ruined my ovaries. They almost tore out. They are really messed up.”
“There’s got to be some way.”
“No there’s not. Why don’t you believe me?”
“Because I want to have kids with you so bad.”
“There’s no way Jayce. I’m sorry.” She closes her eyes and turns away from him. “There’s no possible way Jayce.” She continues.
“Well to me the only real way that you couldn’t have kids is if you had a hysterectomy.”
“Jayce, I can’t have kids. Leave it at that.” She says with her eyes still closed and turned the other way.
JC sits silently for a second and mumbles to himself, “We’ll figure out a way.”
Sophie turns so she is now lying on her stomach and starts to cry softly. JC walks over to her and begins to speak.
“You need some time to gather your thoughts. I’m just going to talk to the guys for a bit.”
Sophie turns to look at him.
“Jayce is Lance and Justin here or is it just Joey and the Chris’s?”
“It’s just Joey and the Chris’s. I haven’t told Lance and Justin yet.”
“Oh. Will you tell Kris I want her please?”
“Sure.” JC goes out into the waiting room where everyone has been waiting and tells Kris to get her butt in there.
Kris enters the room and Sophie looks up and smiles.
“Hey Kris.”
“Hey Soph. How are you feeling?”
“I’ve been better.”
“I can tell that.”
“So Jayce hasn’t told the other guys yet?”
“Nope. He wanted to see what was going on before he told them. Right now it’s just the five of us that know.”
“I’m sorry to say this, but can I talk to Chris?” Sophie says after a few minutes.
“Yeah, I’ll go get him.” Kris goes back to the waiting room and gets Chris.
Chris comes into the room a few minutes later.
“Kris said that you wanted to talk to me?”
“Chris, I really wanted to tell you about the baby.”
“Soph, it’s OK. What’s done is done.”
“Chris, have I ever told you I love you?”
“Plenty times.”
“Really? Did you ever believe me?”
“Yeah. I just never thought that anything like this could happen. You have me and Joey. What else did you need?” he says giving a mischievous smile.
“Chris, I love you. I really mean it.”
“Then how come you went with JC?”
“I don’t know. It just happened after he walked in on me in the shower. I love you and Jayce. Please, talk to me.”
“When did he walk in on you in the shower?”
“About three weeks ago.”
“Oh.”
“I love you both.”
“If it happened three weeks ago, how could you have known about being pregnant? That’s too early to tell.”
“You have to believe me. I could tell because he didn’t use a condom.”
“He almost never uses a condom.”
“I know. But I always felt queasy afterwards for about two weeks.”
“You did take a test, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“After two weeks it’s still a little bit early though.”
“Chris, will you kiss me?” Sophie looks at him longingly after a while.
“I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because how can I trust you?”
“Chris, I…I didn’t mean to hurt you. It was a mistake.”
“I know you didn’t. But the fact remains that you did.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Kris and I are heading back to the states after a few days.”
“What? Why?”
“While you were out, she got a call from her dad. Her ‘mom’ had a heart attack and died. We have to go to the funeral.”
“Oh. OK. So this will be the last time I see you?”
“Well, we’ll be back in a week or two. Right now she’s really upset. Joey took her back to the house.”
“Have you told Justin and Lance?”
“Yeah. JC told them a while ago. He called them right after he told us. They’re on their way over.”
“OK. So Chris, I have to tell you that I think it would be better if we don’t be friends anymore.”
“Why not?”
“Because I have hurt you too much.”
“True, but we can be friends, just not going out.”
“OK, I guess.”
“I don’t want to lose your friendship.”
“Well I was never a friend Chris.”
“Yeah, we jumped right into a relationship. We could try to be friends though,”
“I don’t think it would work.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m not a nice person.”
“Then how come you’re friends with everyone else?”
“You know what I did to you, so I’m not a good friend to have. They don’t really know me.”
“If you think about it, nobody really knows anybody.”
“Well yeah, there’s that. But I don’t know Chris. I just need to be alone. Why don’t you all go back to the states, including JC.”
“OK. But you know where to reach us if you need us.” Chris says as he leaves the room.
Chris arrives back in the waiting room where JC has been waiting and tells him what Sophie said.
“What? Why the hell?” JC responds. “I’m going to go see her.”
“JC, she says she needs to be alone and we need to respect that. I’m going back with Kris anyways for her ‘mom’s’ funeral. We got to tell Joey too.” Chris tells him. “JC, we have to respect her wishes. It’s what she wants.” Chris continues.
JC finally agrees to it and they all go back to the house to pack
