Chapter 35

Todd stared out the window as the taxi made its way toward the edge of town, his knuckles white and tight as he clutched the briefcase beside him. Tea watched him quietly.

“What are you thinking?” she asked.

Turning quickly, his eyes softened a little and he actually smiled.

“How unbelievably hot you look,” he said, stroking the long, white mink that barely covered her legs with his cuffed hand. “I’m burning those clothes when we get home.”

Tea laughed, as the young, black driver shot them a suspicious look in the rearview mirror.

Finally the taxi pulled over in front of an old, abandoned building just outside the city limits. Todd handed the driver a roll of bills as they both got out of the cab. As soon as his feet touched the pavement the taxi peeled away and disappeared in seconds, startling them both.

“What is this place, Todd?” asked Tea, looking up at the tall, stone edifice of what was obviously a once impressive structure.

“It’s the old Coroner’s office. It was abandoned year’s ago by developers who wanted to turn it into condos.”

He took her hand and they walked silently around the side of the building looking for the door Ram had mentioned. All the streetlights had been blown out and Tea walked carefully in her spiked heels amid the broken glass and garbage, as they made their way in the cool darkness.

“Over there,” said Tea, pointing to a door.

Todd pulled a flashlight from his pocket and flashed it across the door. It read: “Authorized Personnel Only.”

It opened easily, a long, rusty whine announcing their arrival.

It was pitch black inside and Todd flashed the light beam down a long corridor as they walked slowly. They came to a stairway leading downward to the basement of the building. At the bottom there was a door marked: Examinations.

Todd felt Tea’s hands pressing into his as he let go of her hand and reached for the door, swinging it open.

The room was illuminated with dozens of flickering candles in glass jars scattered across a metal table and an electric heater glowed brightly in the corner of the large, mostly empty room. A tall man dressed in black leather, with shoulder-length, light brown hair leaned against some metal doors set into the wall watching them. As Todd and Tea got closer they noticed he had painted a scar along his cheek, just like Todd’s and that he was holding a silver gun in his hand, pointed directly at them. They froze.

Ram removed his wig and wiped the painted scar off his cheek with the back of his hand.

“I want to be you, Toddler. You’re my hero,” he said, laughing lightly, throwing the wig across the room.

Todd looked around at the empty room.

“Where’s Starr?”

Ram stepped away from the square, metal door on the wall and yanked it open. Reaching down with his free hand, never taking his eyes off of them, he pulled a slab out of the wall. Starr was lying on it, her hands and feet bound.

“Daddy!” she said excitedly.

Ram backed away as Todd and Tea ran to her.

Todd kissed her forehead as Tea checked her over.

“Honey, are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m okay, just scared,” she said as tears started pouring down her face.

“MOVE AWAY FROM HER!” yelled Ram, shooting into the air.

Todd and Tea jumped back as they heard the bullet ricocheting off the pipes. Ram walked back over to Starr, slid the slab back into the wall and shut the door.

“Told you she was okay. I’m a man of my word, Toddler.”

Todd held up the briefcase cuffed to his wrist.

“Here’s your money.”

Ram dug into his pocket and pulled out a small key, throwing it at Tea’s feet.

“Unlock the cuffs and place the briefcase over there in the corner, mi reina radiosa,”[my radiant queen] he said softly, his eyes on Tea.

Todd nodded to her as she bent over and picked up the key. Taking the briefcase she walked over and placed it in the corner as he’d asked.

“Open it.”

Tea opened the briefcase and looked back at Ram, a wide grin spreading across his face.

“Now, my Spanish jewel, cuff Todd against that back wall, onto the thick pipe above.”

“No!” she replied.

Ram shot right at Todd as Tea screamed running to him.

“I’m okay, Tea,” said Todd, his eyes on Ram’s gun.

“Next time, I won’t miss, Tea. Do as I ask.”

Tea walked Todd to the back wall and slipped the open cuff around a thick pipe that curved up toward the ceiling.

“Now throw the key back to me.”

Tea threw the key back to him. Ram bent down quickly and pocketed it. Lowering the gun slightly he started walking toward Tea, circling around her slowly when suddenly, he leapt at her and yanked off her coat. Tea heard a loud tear as she moved away from him, her coat on the floor.

“Now...that’s much better,” he said, admiringly, as his eyes checked her over continuing to circle around her , his gun pointed at her. Todd yanked helplessly at the chains.

“Soy el tigre. Te accecho entre las ojas. Entonces en un salto de fuego, sangre, dientes, de un zarpazo derribo tu pecho, tu caderas. Bebo tu sangre. Yo soyo cetinela implacable de mi amor asesino.” [I am the tiger. I lie in wait for you among the leaves. Then in a leap of fire, blood, teeth, with a claw slash I tear away your breast, your hips. I am your relentless sentinel of my murderous love.] he whispered.

Tea walked away from him and went to Todd, placing her arms around him.

“Go to hell!”

“Don’t you like my pretty words, amada?”.

“Those aren’t your words!” Tea shot back.

Ram backed away and waved his gun around.

“Of course, you’re right, oh brilliant one! They are the words of your favorite poet, Pablo Neruda....am I right?”

Todd stared at Tea as she nodded quietly, shivering with fear.

“So, it’s LOVE Todd Manning that’s brought you to this sorry state? Once, you were a force to be reckoned with, you were my hero...Todd Manning, rapist extrodinaire. Now...look at you, seduced and tamed, brought to your knees by this enchantress, this Spanish Circe. What a terrible shame, but...who could blame you, Toddler? I’m might journey to hell myself and fetch me a soul to win the heart of Tea Marissa Delgado.”

Ram approached Todd, his gun firmly pointed at his chest.

“Tell me, Toddler, is she incredible in bed?”

“SHUT THE FUCK UP!” yelled Todd, pulling at the cuffs that wouldn’t budge and trying to hit him with his free hand, spitting out his frustration.

“Oh, I bet she is! Glorious, savage...makes you glad you have a big, hard cock between your thighs!”

“SHUT UP!”

Ram laughed and danced around the room.

“Don’t let him taunt you, Todd. It’s what he wants. Don’t give him the satisfaction.”

“Tea...come over here...to me,” said Ram.

Todd felt her body stiffen against him, but she didn’t move.

“NOW!” yelled Ram, letting off another bullet, this time shooting at the door Starr laid behind.

Tea walked over slowly.

“Tell me, Tea, what would you be willing to do to save Todd’s life,” he said, unbuckling his belt with his free hand, slowly unzipping himself.

Tea looked him straight in the eye.

“I’d do ANYTHING to save Todd’s life, except...betray him. You’ll have to kill me if you want that!” she said turning her back on him and walking back to Todd.

Ram smiled.

“Ah....sweet, sweet, love. Such a tigress...so ferocious in her loyalty. If I had a heart, it would ache for you, querida. But, don’t worry...I won’t force you to betray him.”

“You couldn’t,” said Tea emphatically.

Ram smiled and bowed his head to her.

“I admire your will, and your faith, beautiful one...they’re so damn sexy.” He turned to Todd. “So, Toddler, she is your cure? Your sweet angel of redemption...the antidote to that poison daddy left inside you? Yes, an infinitely better choice than that atrocious creature you once married. If I were you I’d keep Starr away from that woman....bad blood.”

Todd glared at him.

“Who the fuck are you?” asked Todd.

“The man you could have been...” he said, walking over to the briefcase and slamming it shut. “It’s time for me to go. Tea...walk out with me, alma mia. I have a gift for you.”

“NO! TEA STAYS!”

“Don’t worry, Todd. I won’t harm her...I worship her...and her beautiful soul. I only punish the wicked. Like I said, I’m a man of my word. Now, come along Tea,” he said, pointing his gun at her.

Tea moved slowly toward the door.

“I love you,” she said, turning around to Todd, then, she was gone.

“TEA!” yelled Todd, pulling at the cuffs until he felt his wrist snap, wincing with pain. “TEA! TEA....”
