Chapter 27

Tea threw her white mink across the sofa carelessly as she watched Cherry strolling around the penthouse in amazement, staring out the window at Llanview as it shimmered in the darkness.

She’d had the same childish sense of wonderment as they rode over in the limousine, sticking her head up through the sunroof and yelling “look at me” at passersby as she guzzled another beer in a few, long swallows.

“Wow…this is so cool!” yelled Cherry. Tea looked around nervously, spotting a few framed family pictures on the desk and shoving them quickly into a lower drawer as Cherry continued to gawk out the window.

“Would you like something to drink?”

Cherry turned around.

“Sure, baby…a beer?”

Tea walked into the kitchen and leaned against the refrigerator, trembling.

“What the hell am I doing?” she whispered to herself.

Grabbing a beer and quickly opening it she walked back into the livingroom to find Cherry lounging across her mink, her fingers caressing the soft fur.

“This is so soft…soft like you,” said Cherry, her blue eyes glowing at the site of Tea. “Come and sit with me, Marissa.”

Tea walked over, handed her the bottle and sat beside her. Immediately Cherry began playing with the pink ribbon holding Tea’s corset together.

“I love pink…it’s my favorite color,” she said sweetly, tugging on the ribbon. “Like the pink of your lips…of…your pussy…”

Tea stood up nervously.

“What’s wrong, baby? Isn’t that why we’re here?”

“I’m not used to this…it’s all kind of new to me. I’m married.”

Cherry took a long drink from her bottle. “Yeah, I kinda figured that from that ring on your finger. We get a lot of married chicks at the club, no big deal. Everybody likes to get a little naughty now and then,” she said getting up and circling slowly around Tea as if she were delicious prey.

“You’re beautiful, Marissa,” she said, touching Tea’s arm lightly. “You’re skin is so smooth and perfect, not a scratch or a mark, like you was just born…like a baby’s.”

Tea watched Cherry with quiet fascination, smelling the beer on her breath and her lids half closed as she stood in front of her, swaying lightly with obvious inebriation. This mysterious imp had rather impressive and sophisticated seduction skills for a street kid, contrived but affective.

“Uh…thanks, Cherry. I guess I am a little bored in my marriage. My husband, well, he just doesn’t know how to satisfy me. We go months without…touching.”

“Where is your husband?”

“Away. Uh…tell me, Cherry, how did you come to be at The Black Key Club?”

Cherry took a sip of beer and walked over to the window.

“I live there. It’s my home.”

“Don’t you have a real home? Parents?”

Cherry turned around sharply and stared at Tea.

“What’s it to you?”

“I’m just curious. It’s a rather unusual place for someone as young as you.”

Cherry smiled.

“I ain’t that young. I been on my own since I was thirteen.”

“You’ve lived there since you were thirteen?”

“Nah. Not always. Hey…do you know the old Bedford Bridge at the end of Angel Square, by the river?”

“Yes. I don’t think it’s been in use for years. Why?”

“That’s where I lived for a year. Me and a couple of others lived there, slept there. We used to fish sometimes…you know, to eat… cook it over a fire in a metal barrel...” she said quietly, sitting on the sofa with a faraway look in her eye. “It was really cold there, and windy…but…it was better than where I came from.”

Tea’s eyes misted as she listened her, more affected by Cherry than she wanted to be.

“One day, I was downtown, you know, trying to score, and this beautiful older chic in a black car drove up. She talked real nice to me, fed me lunch, gave me some money. Then, she asked me if I wanted to work for her at The Black Key Club. Her name was Regina.”

“The woman at the club? With…the…uh…slave?”

“Yeah. I’d be dead if it wasn’t for her. I owe her everything. I’d do anything for her. I wanted to serve her, wanted to be her slave, her submissive, that’s what Regina calls it, but, she said I was too…angry, too what’s the word…rebellious. I got bad habits that I can’t shake, always get me into too much trouble. But, I have another mistress now.”

“Oh? Doesn’t your mistress mind you being here with me?”

Cherry looked up at her as she removed a joint from her pocket and lit it with a cheap, plastic lighter. Taking a long drag, she slowly released the smoke, forming a gray, puffy cloud around her pretty face. Lifting up her hand she offered the joint to Tea and she took it without hesitation.

“My mistress is…uh, sick. She’s in the hospital right now.”

Tea started shaking. Turning away from Cherry she raised the joint to her lips and pretended to take a hit before handing it back. Cherry took another drag and lay back against the sofa, looking at the ceiling through thick, heavy lids.

Tea started shaking. Turning away from Cherry she raised the joint to her lips and pretended to take a hit before handing it back. Cherry took another drag and lay back against the sofa, looking at the ceiling through thick, heavy lids.

“Oh, is she seriously ill?”

“Nah…she, uh, got herself beat up, that’s all. But, she’s okay, she’s tough! She’ll be out soon.”

“Tell me about her.”

Cherry sat up and looked at Tea curiously, struggling with the affects of the pot and the alcohol.

“Why?”

Tea sat beside her and caressed her face tenderly.

“Because…I like you. And…I want to know all about you.”

Suddenly Cherry moved in and before Tea had a chance to react, she felt Cherry’s lips on hers. Her lips felt soft and childish and her small tongue tasted of beer and tobacco as Tea kissed her back with as much intensity and passion as she could muster.

Cherry pulled away breathlessly and smiled at Tea.

“Um-m….you kiss good, baby. I can’t wait for more…”

Tea stood up.

“Well…I don’t know if we should go any further, Cherry. Obviously, you’re very devoted to your mistress. I don’t want to get you in trouble with her.”

“She’ll never know. Besides, she’s got a lot of shit going on…doesn’t want me around right now.”

“Why not?”

“Cause…I know all her secrets,” said Cherry, smiling drunkenly.

Tea sat beside her again.

“I love secrets,” whispered Tea, teasingly, taking Cherry’s hand in hers, making the young girl giggle.

“My mistress, her name is Blair, and she’s got this scam going on…but…I ain’t suppose to tell. Cause…I could get in trouble with the cops. See, I did some time recently for possession and, I’m on parole. That’s where I met my mistress, in prison. She saved my life there and…I owe her. I never want to go back to prison…it’s full of mean, ugly bull-dykes…fucking animals in heat…there like big, rough men who just want to hurt you,” she said, her eyes full of fear as she inhaled from the joint dangling from her lower lip.

“This scam…is it to get money?”

“Money? Nah, my mistress has plenty of money. It’s about her kid. Her ex-husband has custody of her daughter and…she’s gonna get her back.”

“How?”

Cherry struggled to get up off the sofa and staggered over toward the stairs, holding on to the railing.

“I’m shit-faced…don’t feel so good.”

Tea walked over and took her arm, walking her slowly toward the kitchen.

“Honey, I think you need something to eat,” said Tea, pulling her into the kitchen and sitting her at the table. Cherry watched as Tea removed some sliced turkey, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato from the refrigerator. Lining up slices of bread across the counter, Cherry watched quietly as Tea made them sandwiches, stacking the items neatly and putting them on pretty flowered plates, slicing them diagonally. Tea placed the plate in front of Cherry and poured her a glass of milk.

Cherry watched her suspiciously.

“Thanks…that’s really nice. I just kinda realized I haven’t eaten all day,” she said, picking up the sandwich and taking a bite out of it. “Um-m-m…good.”

For a few minutes they were quiet as they ate. Tea watched Cherry wolfing down her sandwich and couldn’t help feeling sorry for her…her maternal instincts kicking in. Cherry was someone’s child, someone’s daughter…

“Would you like another one?” asked Tea, as Cherry polished off the sandwich and milk quickly.

“Yeah…please.”

Tea made her another sandwich.

“Cherry, when Regina took you in, did she…did she treat you okay?”

Cherry stopped eating.

“Sure. She gave me a bed…food…clothes…money.”

“And, did she make you work, or go to school?”

Cherry laughed.

“School? Nah…but I did work in her place. Cleaning up and stuff at first, then…when I got older, I did…other stuff,” she said, closing her eyes and pushing her sandwich aside. “I guess I’m not hungry anymore…could I have another beer?”

“Sure,” said Tea, getting her another drink. “You went to prison for drug possession?”

Cherry took a long swallow and closed her eyes.

“Crack. That’s my downfall. I LOVE crack…it’s cheap…strong…makes you forget everything. But…it’s a short high and as soon as you come down you want it again. I’m trying to go straight, just beer, pot…just mild stuff…you know, to get me through the day. But…I miss it, that high. That heaven. Crack…nothing better than that beautiful haze…it makes you forget everything, specially…who you are.”

Tears rose in Tea’s eyes and she walked out into the livingroom quickly. Guilt overwhelmed her as she listened to this sad, young woman, this corrupted urchin whose pain reminded her so much of Todd’s. But, Cherry was the key, she had all the answers that Tea needed to set Todd free. She just wasn’t liking herself very much right now, using this abused, neglected child of the streets for her own means.

Cherry came out of the kitchen and sat down again. Her lids were closed as she stretched across Tea’s coat on the sofa.

“Cherry…what happened to your mistress? Why is she in the hospital?”

Cherry’s eyes fluttered a little.

“She…uh…she got raped.”

Tea went and sat next to her.

“I’m so sorry, Cherry…that’s terrible.”

“Yeah…it was pretty disgusting to watch…”

“You saw it?”

Again Cherry’s eyes fluttered, then closed.

“Aha, I saw it all. It was…awful…but…I’m not suppose to tell…don’t want to get anybody in trouble…don’t tell…,” she slurred.

“Who raped Blair, Cherry? Please…tell me.”

Cherry’s eyes remained closed. Tea shook her a little.

“Cherry? Wake up, honey?”

She had finally passed out.

Tea stood up and grabbing a brown blanket from behind the sofa covered her gently.

“Oh my God! Oh, Blair…what have you done?”

Tea paced around a bit before walking over to the phone and dialing.

“Bo Buchanan, please. Tell him it’s Tea Delgado.”
