Chapter 25
“Hello, I’m Tea Delgado. Yesterday I picked up some records on Blair Cramer but they’re incomplete. I need the records from the emergency room, and also a list of her personal belongings when she was admitted,” said Tea, handing the records clerk a release form she had obtained from Hank Gannon’s office.
“I’ll be right back, Ms. Delgado,” said the clerk as she disappeared behind a door.
A few minutes later the clerk returned with the documents in a folder. Tea thanked her and began walking toward the exit…walking slowly…her feet leading the way, guiding her mindlessly through a series of familiar doors, down a number of hallways, away from the entrance, and toward the last place she should be going…to Blair’s room. This was the worst possible thing she could do, confront Blair, but her anger was building as Todd sat in jail and their lives were torn apart again by this vindictive woman. The urge to beat the truth out of Blair’s injured body was so strong, Tea bit the inside of her lip bloody to keep from rushing in.
It was then she caught a glimpse of something familiar. Just as she turned the corner and peered down the corridor toward Blair’s room, she saw that young woman again, the pink-haired girl she’d seen yesterday. She was hurrying toward the elevator and Tea rushed to catch up with her, but the doors closed too quickly. Tea sighed, her instincts telling her that this girl was somehow connected to everything.
Walking toward the parking garage her limbs felt sluggish and exhausted, she began feeling the weight of all this, the daunting task of defending Todd, a convicted rapist who was being accused by his ex-wife and the mother of his child. It depressed her that her legal skills, the one thing she had complete confidence in, had failed him, that he was still sitting in jail. Getting into her car she glanced quickly at the reports all indicating the same thing…Blair had been raped. Throwing them aside angrily, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the condom wrapper, staring at it dejectedly.
“Blair, what the hell did you do?”
As she drove out of the garage and circled around the entrance she noticed the same young woman hailing a cab and quickly getting into it.
“Now…where are you going, Ms. Thing…” said Tea to herself as she began to follow the taxi at a distance. Her fingers trembled as she clutched the steering wheel tightly, feeling the pounding in her chest echoing in her ears as she drove along Llanview Boulevard for a few miles, heading toward the waterfront district near Angel Square.
Finally, the taxi turned into an area near the water that once made up a large container port, part of a shipping era that had slowly disappeared from Llanview. Tea stopped, afraid she might look conspicuous among the few cars around, and watched as the cab stopped some distance away in front of what looked like a large, abandoned warehouse…a huge, gray-metal structure by the Llantano River.
The young woman got out of the cab and Tea watched it make a u-turn and rush right past her, heading back toward the city. The girl headed toward the entrance, pulled out a key and entered quickly, shutting the heavy metal door behind her.
Tea drove up and parked near by. As she walked around she noticed quite a few cars scattered here and there, and as she headed up to the entrance she saw a sign on the door. There was a large, black silhouette of a key and it read:
NO TRESPASSING: MEMBERS ONLY
Taking a deep breath, she rang the red buzzer and stepped back.
The door opened a few moments later and a tall, burly man stepped forward. His head was shaved, taught and shiny, and goat horns were tattooed on either side of his skull starting at his temples and curving around beneath his ears. His chest was barreled and muscular, his thighs were thick, massive pillars beneath his black leather pants, his arms like bulging drumsticks strapped to his enormous shoulders. He was shirtless and Tea noticed he wore black gloves as he crossed his arms across his chest.
“You got an appointment, beautiful lady?” he asked, his voice surprisingly soft and civilized. Tea looked up into his eyes and was riveted with fear. They were black, so dark they seemed to lack a pupil, like a reptiles. They were brilliant in their darkness, like a rounded onyx stone with only a bright speck of light to accentuate their complete blackness and roundness.
“Uh…no…no, I don’t,” said Tea nervously, trying not to be intimidated by him. “A friend…told me about this place…and I…uh…wanted to check it out for myself.”
He looked her up and down, taking in her expensive clothing and jewelry.
“Bi-curious?” he asked, smiling down at her.
“Of course,” said Tea, smiling back and winking convincingly.
“No visiting during the day, your friend should have told you that…by appointment only. Here, take this,” he said reaching behind him and handing her a flyer before he closed the door in her face.
Tea walked back to her car and sat in the driver’s seat, slowly reading through the flyer.

A chill ran through her as she looked out across the expanse of the Llantano River, its dirty, brown water peaking through here and there beneath its perfectly white, frozen surface.
