Chapter 2

~Finally, reaching for the handle he unlocked the door. Swinging it wide open, he saw a tall, shadowy figure standing in the rain. Reaching for the light switch he turned the outside light on and saw a pair of raging, icy green eyes staring back at him. It was Blair, fresh from prison~

The thunder clashed loudly above their heads as the rain fell heavily causing tiny rivulets to run across the foyer’s parquet floor, wetting Todd’s bare feet as he and Blair stood silently, staring at one another, the vestiges of old hatreds and betrayals raging between them.

She was all in black. Her hair was saturated with rain, soaked against her skull and her dark make-up ran in ugly black streaks toward her thin lips, which trembled with unspoken anger. But…her eyes were all that he noticed…glowing from her pale, hardened face like poisonous kryptonite, bright green and blazing with a hatred that startled him…a gorgon who could turn him to stone with her hideous stare.

“What the fuck are you…” he said, regaining his voice at last. “Get the hell out of my house!”

He attempted to shut the door in her face but Blair heaved her body against it with tremendous force, to Todd’s surprise, and rushed past him into the foyer.

“Where’s my little girl? Where’s Starr? I’m not leaving till I see her,” she said, her voice straining with her wrath.

“Like hell you are,” he said, his voice low and rough with controlled hostility. “Starr is asleep in her bed and I don’t want her disturbed.” He looked up at the top of the stairs protectively then approached Blair, his lips so close to her face she could feel his hot breath on her wet skin as he spoke in a seething whisper. “And I don’t want your toxic hatred anywhere near my daughter. You want to see Starr? I suggest you get yourself a good lawyer because it will be over…my…dead…body.”

“Todd? I thought I heard…”

Tea’s soft voice broke the tension as she came over the landing and began descending the stairs, her silky, crimson robe billowing behind her as she raised her hand to push her wild, tousled hair back from her face. When she saw Blair standing there, wet and wild, she stopped, fixed in the middle of the stairway, speared to the spot by the force of Blair’s contemptuous glare.

Tea looked around at their beautiful home, this gothic, art-nouveau monstrosity of a house filled with the contrasts of the grotesque beauty that was their love for one another…this dark, rich domesticity that she and Todd had lovingly compiled and created from the wreckage of their painful past…angels and monsters living in perfect harmony…perfect balance. The sound of thunder crashed above her and she looked up at the sound…acknowledging the rumblings of her beautiful life collapsing all around her. Evil had returned to her life and the balance disturbed…the scales had tipped to the dark side once again.

“Blair? What are you doing here?”

“She’s leaving,” said Todd, wrenching her arm and pushing her toward the open door.

“NO!” she yelled, pulling away from him and heading toward the stairs. Todd went after her and held her as she lunged toward a frightened Tea who would not budge.

“STARR! STARR! STARR,” screamed Blair wildly as she fought Todd with all her strength. He tried to cover her mouth but she sank her teeth into his hand. Todd felt the sharp sting of her canines breaking his skin, causing him to release her as she fell to the floor with a loud thump. Tea ran down the stairs quickly to examine Todd’s hand.

“Oh my God…are you alright,” Tea asked, examining Todd’s bloody hand as Blair got to her feet, licking a droplet of his blood off her lower lip with sinister relish…a taste of something she’d wanted for so long.

“Mommy?”

Startled by a little voice that came from the darkness at the top of the stairs, Todd, Tea and Blair all looked up. Starr stood there wearing yellow pajamas, the same color as her long, pretty hair. She ran down the stairs quickly with her wispy blond hair flying and jumped into her mother’s arms as Blair lifted her up and planted small kisses on the top of her head. Todd and Tea could only stand by silently and watch Blair use her dark magic on Starr.

“Oh, my girl…my beautiful, little girl,” cried Blair. “Do you know how much I missed you? Do you? Starr…Starr…by beautiful Starr. I missed you so much.”

“Mommy…you’re back! I missed you too, mommy,” cried Starr, burying herself in her mother’s embrace as Blair continued to rock her in her arms and squeezed her tightly.

Tea eye’s filled with tears as she looked up at Todd who stood paralyzed to the spot…powerless and silent as the minutes ticked away. Finally he walked over and put his hand on Starr’s arm.

“Starr…I want you to go back to bed. Your mother and I have some things to discuss…grown-up stuff.”

“No, daddy. I want to stay with mommy. It’s been so long since I’ve seen her.”

Blair turned to Todd, a serpentine and victorious smile playing at the corners of her lips as she pulled Starr closer to her, well aware of the power in a mother’s love.

“Yeah…I know you do, Starr, but you’re mother has to leave right now… don’t you, Blair?” asked Todd.

A shiver ran through Blair’s damp body as Todd stared at her, his eyes full of cold, murderous intent…a dangerous look that warned her to tread lightly. She released Starr and stroked her hair.

“Yes, Starr…mommy has to go. I just couldn’t go another minute without seeing my little girl…or, should I say big girl…you’ve grown so much. But…I promise I’ll be back tomorrow. I’m staying at Sam’s until I get my own place and then…you and Jack and me… can see each other every day,” she said, continuing to stroke Starr’s hair as she spoke.

“I have so much to tell you, mommy. Jack is walking and talking now. And wait till you see my little sister, Alma. She’s so pretty…she looks just like Tee!”

Blair sneered at Tea.

“So…you finally got a kid of your own. Great…now you won’t make a habit out of stealing mine.”

Todd had had enough! He moved quickly over to Starr, nudging her up the stairs.

“Get up stairs right now, Starr. Go back to bed. You can see your mother tomorrow,” said Todd.

“But…daddy. I want to stay with mommy,” she whimpered.

“Now, Starr!” Todd said sharply in an authoritative fatherly tone that Starr did not dare disobey.

“Okay, daddy. Bye mommy…I love you,” she said as she ran quickly up the stairs, responding to the command of her father’s voice.

“By, sweetness…mommy loves you to…mommy loves you more than anyone…always remember that,” yelled Blair after her.

Todd waited till he heard Starr’s door slam before grabbing Blair’s arm and pushing her violently out the door, hurling her into the darkness of the dawn in the pouring rain.

“If you ever set foot on my property again…I’ll have you thrown in jail. And never…EVER…try pulling this surprise visit shit on me again…or I’ll make sure you never see Starr as long as you live! Do you understand me, Blair?”

“No court in this state will keep me from seeing my daughter…just ask your Chiquita lawyer! And…I’ll get her back, Todd. It’s just a matter of time before you fuck up the way you always do. There is no way I will let my little girl be raised by an ex-rapist and his Puerto Rican whore!” she shouted as the rain beat against her twisted face. “And I will get her back, Todd…you’ll pay for what….”

Todd slammed the door in her face mid-sentence, but she continued to yell and pound on the door.

“YOU’LL PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID TO ME, TODD …”

Finally…after a few moments…there was only the sound of the rain. When Todd turned he saw Tea standing there, her dark eyes wide, her lips slightly parted and her face pale. Pulling her into his arms he felt her trembling against him as he tightened his embrace.

“Tea…she’s bluffing…blowing smoke, that’s all. I’m sure Blair will be on her best behavior or she’ll wind up right back in prison. And she’s not seeing Starr. I’m hiring security tomorrow so she doesn’t come near this house again.”

Tea pulled away and looked up at him.

“Todd…legally, you can’t stop her from seeing Starr…you know that. As long as she follows the rules of her parole…and doesn’t prove herself unfit as a parent…the court will allow her to see Starr.”

“She’s not fit to mother a snake…and to hell with the courts. She’s not seeing Starr!”

“Forget the courts, Todd…how are you going to stop Starr from wanting to see her. She loves Blair…whether you like it or not.”

Todd looked up the stairs.

“I don’t know…I’ll figure something out.”

Tea walked over to him and caressed his face, looking deeply into his golden-green eyes.

“Amor…something is different about her. I know she’s always been vengeful…but…her boldness…coming here like this in the middle of the night to our home. Her hatred has empowered her and she’s warning us. I saw the way she looked at us…at you. I think she’s gone mad. She wants more than revenge, Todd…she wants much more…”

“Hey…hey…forget about Blair. I can handle her,” he said, stroking her cheek tenderly. “Blair is nothing…she has nothing. There is no way she can hurt us.”

“Querido, you’re shaking,” said Tea, pulling away from him. “You felt it too…her madness. It frightened you, didn’t it?”

“Blair doesn’t scare me. I can handle her. Let’s forget about Blair,” he said, pulling her slowly to him and kissing her softly and slowly, escaping into her love the way he always did. Tea lifted her arms and circled his neck pushing her body closer into the safety of his powerful embrace. They both wanted to forget. “Let’s go upstairs,” he whispered.

Outside the window in the cloak of darkness, beneath the clash of thunder a pair of pernicious, green eyes watched Todd and Tea kiss, then disappear up the stairway.
