CHAPTER 50

Tea looked at herself in the bathroom mirror as she released her pinned up hair. Taking a bath in the evening had become a ritual, a bit of refuge...it filled up an hour...an hour of solitude away from the eyes of her captors...Mikos, Eva and Aaron, who watched her silently...and relentlessly. Bathing, swimming, walking...this was how she filled her days, but it was the nights that went on forever. The excruciating silence of lying next to Aaron Blackmoor, feeling his eyes on her in the darkness, smelling his lust for her in the night air, not knowing what he’d do the next moment. It terrified her...and she hardly slept...only closed her eyes and pretended, her body tense and primed, ready for flight at the slightest movement from him. Most mornings she was exhausted...and waited for him to get up and finally leave the room so she could get some rest.

She looked at her tanned and naked body, at the thin strip of white on her shoulders that marked the strap of her bathing suit. She was thinner...she ate so little...she had no appetite for anything. Her hands touched her breast softly and closing her eyes she could almost feel his touch on her...his rough kisses, his boyish gentleness, his primal passion. Her body ached for his...her heart ached for him.

“No...you can’t do this, Tea! You need to be strong....you need to think,” she said, approaching the mirror. “Todd loves you...he loves you! Aaron is lying....you know that. He’s a liar. He wants to break you...don‘t let him. Don‘t you let him, chica!”

Tea leaned back against the wall, her mind weary with the struggle to hold on, to trust Todd’s love...but in her heart she felt a lurking doubt that ate away at her. Staring up at the ceiling she closed her eyes with exhaustion.

“You still love me, don’t you, Todd?” she whispered to herself, feeling alone and abandoned. Tea recalled as a little girl feeling like this. When her mother left without a word and she lay in bed night after night, her body tense, her ears strained, waiting for her footsteps....but they never came. Eventually that patience turned to anger...then to self-loathing...doubting she could hold anyone’s love for long.

Tea fought back tears as she slipped on a nightgown made of exquisite white silk lace. It clung to her body perfectly, like all the clothes that Aaron had bought for her. His accuracy frightened her...he was an expert marksman in everything...accept her heart.

As she walked out into the bedroom she was relieved that Aaron wasn’t there as he always was when she finished her bath. She walked around the expansive bedroom with its simple, elegant furniture and clean, sterile whiteness...perfectly neat and clean...perfectly spotless....white bed-linens, white, empty walls, white floor...so orderly, so regimental. On the bed she noticed something dark, a blemish on the perfect whiteness of the silk comforter. Approaching she quickly recognized the picture of Todd and his family and she froze...afraid to go near it as if it held some strange and malignant power that could hurt her. Finally, taking a deep breath, fighting the nausea in her belly, she picked it up and examined it more closely.

Sitting on the bed, more relaxed, she noticed things she hadn’t noticed before when she was caught completely off guard by Aaron out on the beach. There was a faint grid pattern across the picture...as if it had been shot through gridded glass panel like one often sees in hospitals. And she noticed that it was Blair kissing Todd not Todd kissing Blair...in fact his expression seemed off...a look of surprise on his face. Finally she saw that glass tubing coming out of his nose and she touched it softly, feeling sick at the thought of him in pain. Perhaps this was the reason he hadn’t come...maybe he couldn’t.

“What’s going on here,” she said to herself as she continued to examine it more closely as Aaron walked into the room in white drawstring, pajama bottoms and nothing else.

“You look lovely tonight, my sweet,” he said, noticing the strange, pensive expression in her eyes.

Tea stood up.

“Do you know Blair?” she asked suddenly, surprising Aaron who was unable to disguise his annoyance.

“Never met the woman,” he said, turning away.

“Liar! I don’t believe you. I think this picture is a set up...for my benefit...isn’t it?”

“The picture is what it is, Tea...a devoted wife kissing her sick husband as their daughter looks on happily. Nothing more than that. If you wish to see conspiracies...well...I daresay you’ll be able to find them,” he said as he poured himself a brandy.

“If you wanted to show me Todd moving on with Blair you could certainly come up with something slightly more...passionate than this...Todd supine and helpless as Blair lays a pity kiss on him that totally catches him off guard from the look on his face. Is this the best you could do...or is this the best that Blair could do for you?”

Aaron swallowed a long drink.

“I told you...I never met her,” he said impatiently, his eyes roaming along her body.

Tea paced around slowly, deep in thought, her lawyer’s brain clicking away in research mode...gathering details, stringing them together to form plausible conclusions. Patterns. Proof. Evidence.

“A woman called the police station and told them she saw Todd running from the scene of crime when Ben was killed. Was it Blair? Did you get her to do your dirty work for you?”

“I DON’T KNOW HER!” he suddenly shouted from across the room. Slamming his glass on a nearby table he suddenly walked up to her, pulled her toward him with a harsh brutality which made her gasp and tremble. “Why are we discussing this...we could be doing much more interesting things,” he said as he attempted to kiss her.

Tea pulled away from him.

“Don’t touch me. You disgust me.”

His eyes narrowed as he moved slowly toward her with a slithering, stalking motion.

“I remember a time when I didn’t disgust you so much. When I made you cry out for more....and I will again,” he whispered softly, almost seductively as he approached her again, fingering the delicate lace of her nightgown near her breast.

“No...it was never like that between us. The reality is that the only time I enjoyed making love to you was when I closed my eyes...and pretended you were Todd.”

Anger disfigured his perfect features and he growled like a rabid animal as he grabbed her arms painfully and shoved her against the wall. This time she could not moved and he pinned her tightly with his body, his erection rock-hard and raging against her thigh as he whispered to her, spitting his words out bitterly.

“Oh...I see...is this how you like it, my dear...rough and brutal...the way a rapist does it? Was I too gentle, Tea...too passive for your more exotic sexual tastes. Did Todd Manning spoil you for me with his sadistic charm and his bestial fucking...is that how you want it? IS IT? DO YOU WANT ME TO HURT YOU...IS THAT HOW YOU LIKE IT?” he yelled as he lost complete control.

Tea’s body shook wildly as tears and terror rose in her eyes. Aaron Blackmoor did not exist anymore....this man was unknown to her...this was Klaus Herzog...a killer without a conscience! No more facade...no more pretending...this was a violent, soulless fiend she didn’t recognize or know how to control as she struggled against him and cried out desperately.

“AARON...AARON...PLEASE...LET GO OF ME! YOU’RE HURTING ME,” she cried.

With her cries he seemed to awaken from his blinding rage and loosened his grip on her instantly.

“Oh, my love....I...I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me...Tea...please...my darling...forgive me. I beg you.”

Tea moved quickly away from him and ran through the doors leading out to the terrace. As she spilled out onto the cold marble floor of the terrace that skirted the house, her body shook wildly as she rubbed the dark, painful bruises on her arms where he had held her. She took long, deep breaths as her heart pounded in her breast...leaving her gasping for air. As she turned quickly at the sound of his feet, she jumped back at the sight of him right behind her. Klaus Herzog was gone...it was Aaron looking gentle and contrite.

“Please, my sweet...don’t be afraid. I misbehaved...but you must understand how hard it is for me to...restrain myself around you. Darling...I want you....I need you....I need to touch you...like a man. I know that you need time...and I promise...I’ll try and be more patient. I am a disciplined man...I can wait.”

As her fear subsided a little she realized that she couldn’t push him so far anymore...his mental state was becoming too fragmented...too fragile. She could no longer trust him...or his infinite patience because it was obvious he could no longer control himself. A madness seemed to be manifesting itself in him and suddenly, it was not Todd’s life that she feared for...but her own.

Sensing her fear Aaron stepped away from her.

“Do you forgive me, darling...for my brutishness? Please say yes...forgive me...I promise you...you can trust me,” he said, his light blue eyes full of remorse as he reached out his hand for her. “Let’s go to bed, my sweet. I think we both need some rest.”

Tea took a deep breath and nodded slowly, before taking his hand obediently...afraid to set him off again. As they walked back inside a wave of terror ran through her body as she heard the slam of the doors, feeling trapped and cornered. Silently, Aaron walked her to the bed and watched her as she slid beneath the covers and curled up on her side, tight as a snail in its shell. He laid beside her before reaching for the lamp and turning it off.

The room was engulfed in eerie blackness as Tea shut her eyes tightly, her body still trembling as she felt him move slightly and turn toward her. In the darkness she could feel his eyes and his hunger tearing into her body...ravishing her soul...and her sanity.

to be continued...
