REACHING OUT

BY TIMA

CHAPTER

64

PREVIOUSLY:

Todd: Enough mush. Go get your stuff. I'm springing you from this hellhole right now.

Tea: Are you sure we're ready for this?

Todd: No, but we're doing it anyway.

Tea: I guess we are.

[Todd leans down and Tea lightly touches his face as they share a tender kiss.]

REACHING OUT
chapter 64:

[Later that day...

Todd and Tea arrive at their new home.]

Todd: What do you think?

Tea: I'll need to see the inside before I pass judgment on it.

Todd: You were always weird that way, needing to see the inside of places...and people, before you could figure out if you liked them or not.

Tea: And, you're not like that? You didn't need to get to know me first before you knew if you liked me?

Todd: I liked those short skirts you were always wearing. I especially liked it whenever you would bend over to pick stuff off the floor. What more did I need to know than that?

Tea: I always suspected you weren't as much of a slob as you pretended.

Todd: Whatever! Are you ready to go in?

Tea: I'm ready for whatever comes.

[Todd exits the van and moves around to the passenger side. He opens her door and reaches in, prepared to help her out of the van.]

Tea: Wait! Get my chair. I want to do this myself.

Todd: The guy is supposed to carry the chick out of the vehicle. It's one of those tradition things.

Tea: Carrying over the threshold I've heard of, but carrying out of the van...?

Todd: I'll do that threshold thing, too. I'll carry you all the way to the bed.

Tea: The house is already furnished?

Todd: No, but I wasn't going to bring you here without there at least being a bed. That's the whole reason I sprung you from that clinic.

Tea: I hope that's not the only reason, because I'm still not ready to be intimate with you.

Todd: You will be, as soon as we get naked.

Tea: I'm not ready. You need to be patient.

Todd: I hate that word.

Tea: Since I've had to be patient for you, you can be patient for me.

Todd: When have you ever needed to be patient because of me?

Tea: Every moment that I've known you. Now, bring my chair to me so we can go inside and I can look at the house and decide if I want to live here.

Todd: That decision's already been made.

Tea: By whom?

Todd: Whom? By me, whom else?

Tea: Tell me you didn't already buy this house.

Todd: You want me to lie to you?

Tea: How could you be so presumptuous?

Todd: I told you before that I bought the place. Why are you getting angry about it now?

Tea: I didn't know you had already purchased it. I thought, at the most, you had rented it. How could you make a decision this big without consulting me first?

Todd: It's my money.

Tea: Take me back to the clinic.

Todd: No way. You said you'd shack up with me.

Tea: If you can't show me enough respect to...

[Todd tries to pick her up but she refuses to co-operate.]

Todd: Stop being so stubborn. Do that arms around my neck thing.

Tea: I'd like to put my hands around your neck.

Todd: At least look at the place before you pretend to toss me out of your life again.

Tea: Now I understand why you insisted I sit in the passenger seat, instead of staying in my wheelchair.

Todd: You wanted to be up front with me.

Tea: You wanted to be able to control me.

Todd: I'm only doing what you want me to do.

Tea: I want you to get my wheelchair.

Todd: If I put it out here, can I at least carry you out of the van, like you want?

Tea: Okay.

[Todd retrieves her chair from the back of the van and sets it up near the passenger side door.

This time, Tea aids Todd's attempt to pick her up. As he removes her from the van, he abandons the wheelchair and walks toward the main entrance of the house with Tea in his arms.]

Tea: Todd Manning! Put me down this instant.

Todd: You want to sit on the sidewalk?

Tea: Todd, please...

[The sound of Tea's voice gets to him. The feigned anger of moments earlier is gone, replaced by sadness.]

Todd: Let me carry you, Tea. Let me take care of you.

Tea: I want to take care of myself.

Todd: When other people are around, you can do all that independent junk. When it's just us, I want to do everything for you. It has nothing to do with your not being able to walk.

Tea: Even if I wasn't paralyzed, you'd still want to carry me around?

Todd: You wouldn't need me to.

Tea: I don't need you to carry me now, either. I have a chair.

Todd: I want to have you in my arms. Okay? Are you satisfied, now that you got me to spill my guts to you again? Can I take you inside and put you on the bed now, before I end up being the one in a hospital?

Tea: Okay, just this once, because we're crossing the threshold for the first time.

Todd: Whatever!

[As they approach their new home, Todd brings Tea's body close to a decorative feature at the front of the house.]

Todd: Reach up and grab the key.

Tea: You left the key here.

Todd: I knew my hands would be full.

Tea: What if a criminal had found your hiding spot?

Todd: A criminal did...me!

Tea: Your past won't enter this home with us. Neither will mine. This will be our sanctuary.

[Todd carries Tea to the front door.]

Todd: You're getting too sappy. Unlock the door and put me out of my misery.

Tea: That's all I've ever wanted, querido...to end your misery, to make you happy.

Todd: You make me happy, Tea.

Tea: You make me happy, too...even when I'm more miserable than I ever thought possible.

[Tea unlocks the door. Todd carries the woman he loves over the threshold, into their new home, and life.]

to be continued...
