CHAPTER 63 |
PREVIOUSLY:
Inside the building, the image of a menacing figure entering the frame of one of the video cameras, causes the guard to rush from his post, in protection of Tea.
Outside...
The rhythmic sound of footsteps quickly approaching, causes Tea to feel a different sense of panic than what she's been feeling for the last several minutes.
As she turns toward the sound, her stalker nears her in the darkened, deserted parking lot.]

REACHING OUT
chapter 63:
[As Tea turns her chair she sees the man shrouded in dark clothing who has been secretly watching her for the last several minutes. As she looks at his scarred face, her heart beats faster.]
Tea: I knew you'd come.
[Todd doesn't have time to respond as the guard rushes from the building, yelling at him in Spanish.
Tea and Todd both turn toward the guard. Tea yells back to him in Spanish, informing him that her intruder is wanted. The older man continues toward the couple until he can see Todd's face clearly. He smiles as he speaks to Tea, before returning to the building.]
Todd: What did he just say?
Tea: He said that I was foolish the other night.
Todd: You told him about that?
Tea: Actually, I was too ashamed to tell anyone.
Todd: What did he really say?
Tea: He said that he's happy the missing piece of my heart has returned.
Todd: Seriously, what did he say?
Tea: That's what he said, and he was right. I did feel like part of my heart was missing.
Todd: Why'd you tell me to get lost and tell them to keep me out?
Tea: I know you didn't try to see me. Why is that?
Todd: Because, I knew you told them to keep me out.
Tea: I was hurting. I was humiliated.
Todd: That's not how I was trying to make you feel.
Tea: Knowing that doesn't make it any easier.
Todd: I'll never do it again, Tea. I'll hire someone. You're comfortable with the nurses here, right? Pick you're favorite one and I'll double her salary so she can keep being your nurse when you move in with me.
Tea: I don't want that.
Todd: If you don't like any of the chicks here, we'll find someone else.
Tea: I don't want anyone else.
Todd: Don't do this.
Tea: It doesn't matter who's doing it. It's still humiliating.
Todd: But, it's way more humiliating when it's me. I get that now. I just wanted to show you that I could do that for you and it wouldn't change how I feel about you. I proved that. You can have it the way you want it now.
Tea: I want to be alone with you.
Todd: You don't have to do this for me.
Tea: I'm doing it for me. Yes, it will be humiliating having you care for me in that way. You're right. You proved to me that you can do that without it affecting how you look at me. As long as that remains, I want to try again.
Todd: I'm never doing something that makes you feel that way again.
Tea: There are so many ways that I feel horrible right now. There's no way to avoid that.
Todd: I went there.
Tea: Where?
Todd: Where it happened.
[Tea looks away.]
Todd: I could take you.
Tea: I'm not ready. I may never be ready.
Todd: It's like they're still there.
Tea: I don't want to talk about this right now.
Todd: Did they die there, or at the hospital?
Tea: Don't push.
Todd: You always push me to talk about junk I want to forget, but can't. I always hate it when you do it, but you're always right. It's eating you up.
Tea: I'm okay.
Todd: You're miserable.
Tea: I'm handling it.
Todd: You're hiding.
Tea: As long as I'm hiding with you, does it really matter?
Todd: Not really.
Tea: That's what I thought.
Todd: I would take you there, Tea. I'd listen to all your stories, even the ones I'd hate.
Tea: I know you would. I'm not ready.
Todd: Are you ready to live with me?
Tea: Yes.
Todd: Good, because I found us a place. It doesn't have a moat, like I know you wanted, but it has everything else we need.
Tea: You're the one who's always wanted a moat.
Todd: I'll have one built. That way we can keep out annoying neighbors, or annoying brothers.
Tea: Del will be visiting us.
Todd: Only if he survives the moat.
Tea: Don't joke about that.
[Todd kneels down at the side of Tea's wheelchair.]
Todd: For you, I would put up with anything, even Del. I want you to smile again. I want things to be like they were before.
Tea: I may always be in this wheelchair.
Todd: What does that have to do with what I'm talking about?
Tea: You've been very sweet, but...
Todd: I don't want to be with you because you're in that chair.
Tea: Good!
Todd: I don't want to be with you despite the fact that you're in that chair. I just want to be with you.
Tea: Chair, or no chair, this won't be easy.
Todd: It never has been with you. Why should it be any different now?
Tea: Everything is different. I feel different.
Todd: You feel the same to me. You're still soft and you're still beautiful.
Tea: I'm not the same person I was.
Todd: It creeps me out when people smile all the time, anyway. It's okay with me if you don't. Just do that smiling thing once in a while, okay, even if it's because you're laughing at me.
Tea: You like my smile?
Todd: You're beautiful when you smile. You're beautiful when you're not smiling. You're totally beautiful all the time.
Tea: Todd...
[Todd stands up again.]
Todd: Enough mush. Go get your stuff. I'm springing you from this hellhole right now.
Tea: Are you sure we're ready for this?
Todd: No, but we're doing it anyway.
Tea: I guess we are.
[Todd leans down and Tea lightly touches his face as they share a tender kiss.]
to be continued...
