CHAPTER 61 |
PREVIOUSLY:
Todd: If I agree to try again with Starr, will you agree to let me take care of you?
Tea: That's unfair.
Todd: You can't say no. You have to do what I want. What's unfair about that?
[Tea's smile informs Todd that they will be spending the evening together at the hotel.]

REACHING OUT
chapter 61:
[Later that evening...
Todd and Tea are lying together on the large bed in their hotel suite. They're both only wearing their underwear as they caress each other's bodies.
Too soon for Tea, Todd forces her to return her focus to the reality of her current situation.]
Todd: Are you ready?
Tea: To go back to the clinic?
Todd: We'll be okay.
Tea: Everything will change.
Todd: I won't leave you.
Tea: You may not have a choice.
Todd: I won't let you kick me out of your life.
Tea: I don't think I'm ready for this.
Todd: We can wait a little longer, but your doc said you're supposed to do this as close to your regular time as possible.
Tea: Take me back to the clinic. Let the nurses help me with this.
Todd: Is that what you really want?
Tea: Yes.
Todd: You don't want to be here with me? You don't want to spend the whole night touching and doing whatever we want, without people interrupting us all the time?
Tea: I want you to be my lover, not my nurse.
Todd: Tonight?
Tea: You won't want to be my lover, if you continue insisting on helping me in the bathroom.
Todd: It doesn't matter how gross this is, I'll definitely still want to do everything to you that I've wanted to do since I saw you again.
Tea: You say that now, but...
Todd: Trust me.
Tea: Okay, you can do it. But, only because I know you'll finally leave me alone and go back to Llanview after this.
Todd: I'll never leave you alone...ever.
[Todd gets off the bed and retrieves a bag he brought with him from the clinic. Tea watches as he dumps the contents of the bag on the bed. As he reads the written instructions he received at the clinic, Tea closes her eyes, unable to bare looking at the objects on the bed, knowing the humiliation they will cause her. It was difficult enough for her to adjust to the help she needed when it was offered by female nurses. Having her former, and potentially future, lover be the one administering such personal, and embarrassing, help is overwhelmingly emotional for her.
As Tea feels Todd position himself on the bed behind her, she panics.]
Tea: Wait! I'm not ready.
Todd: I've seen your butt before.
Tea: Not like this.
Todd: I should check you for sores anyway. We'll do that first.
Tea: The staff at the clinic is trained to do that.
Todd: Now, so am I. You wanted me to go through hell to prove I could handle this. I did that...for you. I sat in that room with all those people and watched those videos. I listened to everything they were telling me. I answered all their nosy questions about the kind of stuff we've done together before. I stayed through it all, even when they were telling me, and showing me those pictures, about how I'm supposed to handle being with you now. I did it, Tea. I stayed through the whole thing. I even asked questions and prolonged the hell because I wanted to make sure you'd be okay.
Tea: I don't feel okay.
Todd: It's the first time. It won't feel this bad every time.
Tea: What if it does?
Todd: I'll hire someone to do this for you. Just give me a chance, first. I don't want to share you with anyone else. I want it to be just you and me. Let me show you I can take care of you.
[Tea relents. Todd removes her underwear from her body. He checks her lower body for any signs of sores.]
Tea: Do you see anything?
Todd: I'm seeing everything. And, everything I'm seeing, I'm liking.
Tea: This isn't the time.
Todd: You're naked. I'm about to get naked.
Tea: This isn't even remotely sexual for me. Do you understand that?
Todd: It will be. We just need to finish taking care of business first.
Tea: Let's get this over with.
[Todd helps Tea onto her side again. She can't see him behind her but she can hear the sound of him putting on a rubber glove. She clenches her teeth. She's never wanted to disappear, fade away, or die, more than she does in this moment.
Todd is careful as he follows the instructions he was given on how to administer the suppository. When he finishes, he removes the glove and moves around to the other side of Tea.
His heart breaks at the tears he finds escaping her closed eyes. He lies down next to her and places his arm around her body. When he places a kiss near her mouth, she pushes against his body, not wanting his affection right now.]
Tea: Don't.
Todd: It didn't change anything. I told you it wouldn't.
Tea: Maybe not for you, but everything has changed for me. You refuse to listen. You refuse to understand. You don't lessen my pain. You don't ease my humiliation. You escalate it. I wish I were dead more now than ever. This time, it's because of you. Because, you never take no for an answer. You always have to get what you want, regardless of how it affects me. You insisted on beginning this so now we have no choice but to stay here and finish it. But, after we're done here, you're taking me back to the clinic and you're going away. Do you understand me?
Todd: I'm not leaving you.
Tea: I'm not giving you a choice. You've humiliated me enough for one lifetime. No more.
[Todd doesn't know how to respond. He knows that she's serious. He knows that he won't be able to convince her in this moment that things aren't as horrible as she feels they are. He doesn't want to hurt her by pushing her any further. He already regrets pushing her this far after she made it clear to him that she wasn't ready.
Minutes later...
Todd carries Tea into the bathroom. They both struggle through the rest of their time together in the hotel room. When Tea is ready to leave, Todd doesn't attempt to convince her to stay. He takes her to the clinic and, after making certain she's safely inside, speeds away.]
