CHAPTER 59 |
PREVIOUSLY:
Todd: You're giving in that easily? Or, are you going to pretend you're not talking to me again?
Tea: You're the one who stopped talking to me first.
Todd: Let's get into bed and really stop talking.
Tea: What about dinner?
Todd: Do you want to go out?
Tea: Maybe I do.

REACHING OUT
chapter 59:
[Todd and Tea are in his van after leaving the small, cozy restaurant they had dinner in.]
Todd: I can't believe you're not ticked off.
Tea: You're blowing this out of proportion. You've already ruined our dinner. Let this go before you ruin our entire evening.
Todd: I can't believe how okay you are with that kind of injustice.
Tea: Injustice?
Todd: You think it's okay for them to treat customers like that? You're okay with that kind of discrimination?
Tea: Excuse me? I know about discrimination, about real prejudice. That little incident was not prejudice.
Todd: So, you think it's okay for some idiot waiter to treat me differently just because I'm not Puerto Rican?
Tea: He only spoke Spanish. You don't speak Spanish. I interpreted so you could communicate together. Why are you so upset about this?
Todd: He treated me like I didn't exist.
Tea: He only stopped looking at you after you started looking at him with such contempt. Where did all that anger come from?
Todd: I saw the way he was eyeing you. He told you to ditch me and take off with him, didn't he?
Tea: Is that what this is really about? You're jealous?
Todd: Are you going to deny you were checking out his pants.
Tea (amused): What?
Todd: I saw you. You were looking straight at it.
Tea: I was looking at the menu.
Todd: Was it written on his crotch?
Tea: This is ridiculous, Todd. I'm in a wheelchair!
Todd: So? Just because you don't want me doesn't mean that you don't want some other creep, who has a hell of a lot less money than me, by the way.
Tea: I don't care how much money you have. I'm with you, or I was considering being with you, because you seemed so anxious to help me get through this. But, this is not helping me.
Todd: You expect me to step back and let some other guy service you?
Tea: No one is servicing me. I'm not an appliance. I'm a woman. If you have hopes of making love to me ever again, you will stop your Neanderthal attitudes.
Todd: You'd be okay with me checking out the babes?
Tea: Go ahead. I don't care.
Todd: You've made that totally clear.
Tea: I don't understand. This afternoon you appeared to be understanding about my need to wait before I could be intimate with you. Now, you're acting like a complete jerk.
Todd: Not being with me because you're bummed about being in a wheelchair is one thing. Cruising for my fill-in in front of me is completely different.
Tea: What fill-in? What are you talking about?
Todd: The real reason you're putting me off has nothing to do with that wheelchair.
Tea: This conversation is over.
Todd: I'm getting too close to the truth?
Tea: Where are we going?
Todd: Don't change the subject.
Tea: Seriously, this isn't the way to the rehabilitation clinic.
Todd: We're not spending the night there.
Tea: You can spend the night anywhere you choose but I'm spending my night at the clinic.
Todd: I already worked this out with the people there. If we go back now they'll think we had a fight, or something.
Tea: We will have a fight, an even worse one than we have been having up to this point, if you don't take me back there right now.
Todd: Just see the place.
Tea: You haven't found a home for us yet, have you?
Todd: Not yet. We're spending the night at this fancy hotel. It's supposed to be a big deal kind of place. Very expensive.
Tea: I don't care how much it costs. I can't stay just anywhere, Todd. I'm in a wheelchair, remember?
Todd: You never let me forget it.
Tea: That's because it never goes away. It has to be factored into everything we do from now on.
Todd: You might not be in it forever.
Tea: It's possible that I will be.
Todd: It doesn't matter anyway. You'll have to find another excuse for ditching me because that one doesn't work on me.
Tea: I'm not trying to ditch you, although you certainly tempt me at times. But, you do need to keep my situation in mind when you plan things like this.
Todd: I already checked it out. This place has everything you need.
Tea: Does it also have staff that will help me in the bathroom?
Todd: I'll help you.
Tea: I thought we agreed that wasn't a good idea?
Todd: We agreed that we're going to live together. We also agreed that we wouldn't be moving anyone else into our place with us. That means that whatever you need help with, I have to be the one who does the helping.
Tea: I don't want this, Todd.
Todd: Just try it. If you don't like the hotel we can go back to that ugly, sterile place.
Tea: You won't listen to me, will you?
Todd: If we're going to live together you have to get over this thing you have about me helping you like that.
Tea: If it were you that needed this help, you would never allow me to be the one who helped you.
Todd: If it was me, I'd probably try to off myself. But, you'd show up and ruin all my plans, just like I showed up and ruined all of yours. You're stuck with me. Deal with it!
Tea: You don't know what this is like.
Todd: Do you want me to fill you in on some more of the hell I lived in with dear old dad? How about I tell you some stories about my time in prison?
Tea: Those are completely different situations.
Todd: My pain and humiliation came in front of people who hated my guts. This should be easy for you.
Tea: Haven't you thought that it might be worse when it's someone you care about who is witnessing your humiliation.
Todd: Why would you be humiliated?
Tea: When you spoke to my doctor, did she tell you in detail what you would need to do?
Todd: Sure.
Tea: You have to ask why I would be humiliated?
Todd: I get why. I just don't get why you would feel that way with me.
Tea: Because it's you. It's difficult enough with trained staff. I don't know if I can do this with you.
Todd: You have to at least try.
Tea: Fine! I'll try. But, you'll regret it when I'm so humiliated I refuse to see you anymore.
Todd: Like you could ever stop me from being with you every second.
Tea: I'm sure I'll try.
Todd: I'm sure you'll fail.
[They continue their drive to the hotel Todd chose for their evening together, despite their mutual nervousness about all that may occur during their first night away from the rehabilitation clinic.]
to be continued...
