RETURN TO PARADISE
chapter 18:

[Tea returns to the cave and is surprised to find it empty.]

Tea: Todd? Where are you?

[Todd returns to the cave through the back entrance.]

Todd: I was getting you something to eat.

[Todd tosses a box of snack cakes at Tea. She catches it and smiles as she looks at the familiar packaging.]

Tea: You remembered.

Todd: What?

Tea: Don't pretend this is a coincidence.

Todd: Whatever!

Tea: When you're trying to charm a woman, it works better if you don't pretend your sweet actions are accidental.

Todd: You're giving me dating advice?

Tea: Someone needs to.

Todd: Are you saying I'm a lousy date?

Tea: Obviously, you're not too lousy. Your charms did work on me that day.

Todd: What about this day?

Tea: It might be safer for us to reminisce about how charming you were in the past.

Todd: It's just junk food. I never knew why you jumped me like that anyway. Did you have a sugar rush, or something?

Tea: You think it was the sugar that charmed me into your bed the first time?

Todd: Stop using that word.

Tea: You can be very charming, Todd Manning.

Todd: So, you'll stay?

Tea: For one night.

Todd: If I'm such a charming babe magnet, how come chicks are always bailing on me, especially you?

Tea: You make it impossible for anyone to have a lasting relationship with you.

Todd: I tried...as much as I could. You still walked out on me.

Tea: I needed more than you could give. Obviously, you needed more than I could give you, too. You did risk your life paddling away from me last year, remember?

Todd: When are you going to get over that?

Tea: Never.

Todd: If you get to hold a grudge over that one little thing I did, I get to hold one against you for the huge thing you did to me first, right?

Tea: I have every right not to forgive you after the way you treated me.

Todd: You abandoned me, just like my mom did.

Tea: Don't waste your time trying to play on my sympathy. I no longer have any for you.

Todd: When did you turn so cold?

Tea: When you callously abandoned me on a deserted island, not caring if I lived or died.

Todd: I did what I did for you.

Tea: That's bull!

Todd: Jungle Boy wasn't going to keep helping you survive if you kept flaunting what we had in his face. He would have sneaked off with that raft and left us both behind to die. I had to convince him it was through with us so he'd have a reason to keep you alive. I risked myself to make sure you were safe. You should be thanking me for that.

Tea: Do you think I'm stupid?

Todd: I think you still love me.

Tea: I don't love men who abandon me on deserted islands. I don't love men who lie to me. I don't love men who use me. Shall I go on?

Todd: Don't bother. I'm not buying it. You love me. That's why you came back to me.

Tea: We're not getting back together this time. You should save us both the aggravation of continuing this farce. Build a raft and paddle back to the love of your life right now, because I guarantee I won't be falling under your spell this time.

Todd: You won't leave me.

Tea: Why are you so certain?

Todd: I know you, Delgado. If you didn't give a damn about me, you never would have come. You came because you couldn't get me out of your head. I'm inside you.

[Todd enters Tea's personal space, unnerving her. He places an index finger at the collar of her blouse and slides it along her skin, following the line of the fabric down beyond where she has the first two buttons unbuttoned.]

Todd: You like having me inside you, remember?

Tea: Don't try to seduce me.

Todd: I'm not.

Tea: I think you are.

Todd: You always did see what you wanted to see.

Tea: I see your finger on my chest. Is that my imagination?

Todd: Your imagination is out of control if you think I'm trying to seduce you.

Tea: Why are you touching my chest?

Todd: I'm not.

Tea: I can feel it.

Todd: Can you?

Tea: I feel your finger. That's all I feel. I don't have feelings for you anymore.

Todd: You're lying. You're trying to get back at me for last year, which was just me getting back at you for the year before. Next year it will be my turn again.

[Tea lifts his hand and removes his touch from her body. She walks toward the other side of the cave, her arms folded in front of her, determination etched on her face.]

Tea: This ends here. I said I would give you one platonic night so we could end our association on better terms. I'll honor my promise. In the morning I'm going back to civilization, back to civilized people, and civilized ways.

Todd: You think I'm not civilized?

Tea: You didn't come to me and talk to me like a normal human being would.

Todd: I wanted to surprise you.

Tea: You sent me on a mysterious trip.

Todd: You knew the whole time where I was waiting for you. You knew why, too. You came. Words are meaningless. Actions are what matters. You came.

Tea: You left. Let's follow your logic for a moment, shall we? We were stranded on an exotic island. We had just declared our renewed love for each other. Correction, I had declared my love for you. You didn't bother to return the favor. Maybe I should thank you for at least not lying to me that time.

Todd: I never lied to you.

[Tea laughs an unamused laugh.]

Todd: Not about anything important.

Tea: Is that why you couldn't say the words last year? It was too important for you to lie about?

Todd: I lied about it. At the end, I did.

Tea: This could be okay. Do you understand that? We could, for the first time, end our relationship on a pleasant note.

Todd: I thought that's what we did last year when you were so happy to get me off this island you fucked the first guy you saw, in celebration, seconds after I was gone.

Tea: Is that really what you believe happened?

Todd: That's how chicks always celebrate getting rid of me.

Tea: I should just leave now. All we'll do all night is fight about the past. Nothing will be accomplished except increasing our bitterness.

Todd: I'm not bitter.

Tea: Since when?

Todd: Okay, I'm bitter, but not at you. It's the rest of the world that I hate. I don't hate you.

Tea: You don't love me, either. I can't be with you, not even for just a day, if you don't have any genuine feelings for me. I settled for less than I deserved in the past. I regretted it. Not this time.

to be continued...
