RETURN TO PARADISE
chapter 13:

Tea: You can't force me to stay here.

Todd: I didn't force you to come here. I won't have to force you to stay, either. You'll stay because you want what we have.

Tea: We don't have anything anymore, if there ever was anything between us to begin with, other than lies, deceptions, games...

Todd: We had everything between us. We still have it. That's why you came. Now, send your brother away and we can get on with you teaching me what normal people do on their anniversary.

Tea: This isn't our anniversary.

Todd: We got back together last summer.

Tea: Which you promptly put an end to.

Todd: The first time we got married was in the summer. Summer is our anniversary.

Tea: It doesn't work that way.

Todd: It would, if you would just get over the little misunderstanding we had.

Tea: You told me that you were in love with another woman. I understood perfectly well.

Del: You two obviously need privacy. I'll go explore the island some more.

Tea: Stay! This won't take long and then we're leaving.

Todd: He can go. You're staying!

Tea: Why should I?

Todd: Because you want to.

Tea: News flash, Todd! I don't want to be with you.

Todd: You came.

Tea: Only to tell you that it's safe for you to go back to your family. We both know you will eventually, anyway. Save everyone the agony and do it now.

Todd: I told you, I'm never going back there.

Tea: You've said that before, every time you ran away from your problems. Be a man! Go home and work on the rifts you've caused with the people you love.

Todd: Why do you think I'm the one who screwed up this time?

Tea: You pretended that someone murdered your children's nanny in an attempt to convince your ex-wife that someone was trying to murder her.

Todd: She deserved it for what she did.

Tea: Did Starr deserve the pain you caused her, too?

Todd: I would never hurt my kid. You know that.

Tea: You let her think that someone she cared for had been murdered. Did you think that wouldn't cause her deep scars?

Todd: It was just the nanny.

Tea: A woman she spends more time with than both of her parents combined.

Todd: Spending more time with Starr and Jack is what I was trying to do. Blair wouldn't let me see them. I had to do something.

Tea: So you hatched a phony murder plot?

Todd: It worked, didn't it? Everyone fell for it. I had Blair on her way to Europe with her nutty cousin. I was going to grab my kids and come get you.

Tea: Don't pretend that I was on your mind at all while you were playing your demented games with your other ex-wife.

Todd: I had it all figured out. Sam's the one who screwed everything up for us by convincing her to hide out in Llanview.

Tea: Which you used to your advantage. You would have married her again if Sam hadn't figured out your sick plot and derailed your wedding ceremony.

Todd: What else was I supposed to do? I needed my kids back.

Tea: You could have tried telling the truth.

Todd: Do I look stupid?

Del: I'd like to answer that.

Todd: Why are you still here?

Del: Because Tea wants me here.

Todd: No, she doesn't. Tell him, Delgado!

Tea: Del and I are leaving. You can stay here and continue wasting the precious time that you could be spending with the ones you love. I've done my last good deed for you. I never want you to contact me again, is that understood?

Todd: You don't mean that.

Tea: Oh, yes, I do. I have a life now, filled with people who don't take pleasure in my pain. I've come to appreciate being treated with respect.

Todd: I respect you.

Tea: You were content to leave me here to die. I'll never forgive you for that. Good-bye, Todd Manning.

[As Tea turns from Todd, he reaches his hand out and lightly takes hold of her arm, causing her to look at him again.]

Todd: Delgado...

Tea: It's too late. I won't fall for your lies this time, or ever again.

Todd: The lie is the truth and the truth is the lie.

Tea: No more Todd Manning riddles. The entire time we've known each other, there was only one moment when you were truly honest with me. In a strange way I do appreciate that you trusted me enough in that moment to reveal your heart to me. But, it wasn't love for me that you were revealing. Do you know how that made me feel? Do you even care?

Todd: I care.

Tea: If you do, let me go. For my own sanity, I can't continue being on the losing end of this twisted triangle anymore. I need you to give me my freedom.

Todd: I would give you anything, Delgado, but I can't give you that.

Tea: I'm not giving you a choice this time. I'm taking my freedom back, whether you offer it freely, or not.

[Tea pulls her arm out of Todd's grasp and turns from him. Del's heart breaks for his sister as he watches her wipe unshed tears from her eyes. He knows that her heart is breaking. She wants to be with Todd again but she doesn't believe he ever loved her.

Del looks at Todd. The pain he sees etched on his ex-brother-in-law's face causes him to question what really is the lie and what's the truth with this strange enigma before him.]

to be continued...
