RETURN TO PARADISE
chapter 05:

[After Tea and Del retrieve their luggage with no sighting of Todd and no indication what Tea was supposed to do after arriving in Hawaii, they check with the different car rental companies stationed at the airport to learn if Todd had arranged for Tea to have a car. He hadn't. Not knowing what else to do, Tea and her brother take a taxi to the hotel she had previously stayed at during her last trip to Hawaii. Again, they find no indication that Todd had been there or made any arrangements for Tea.

Tea is certain that Todd has been toying with her and had no intention of this trip leading anywhere for her other than a dead end of loneliness and frustration.

In the hotel's lobby, Del sits his sister down to talk strategy.]

Del: Where to now?

Tea: Home?

Del: Your ex-husband must have sent you here for a reason.

Tea: In case you haven't realized it yet, Todd is not normal. Sending me on a journey that leads nowhere is nothing new for him. He's done it before. Did I ever tell you about the key he sent me after our second marriage imploded?

Del: It lead to nothing, too?

Tea: It led to something...another key. I'm certain that key would have lead to another key, which would have led to another key, and so on, until I went mad. I gave up on playing his games back then. I'm giving up now.

Del: But, in order for you to follow the trail he's set for you there would have to be clues laid out. There don't seem to be any this time. Don't you find it odd that he would lead you here without letting you know where to go next?

Tea: Maybe he got bored and lost interest after sending me the plane ticket. I don't care. I'm so tired of allowing Todd Manning to do this to me every couple of years when he suddenly remembers that I exist and decides that he wants one more chance at damaging my life in some way.

Del: You're not even curious enough to want to pursue this mystery a little more?

Tea: Why are you?

Del: Solving mysteries used to be my job.

Tea: It still is. You're just on vacation.

Del: A forced vacation is no vacation.

Tea: It wasn't forced, exactly.

Del: When I'm told that I either have to voluntarily take a leave of absence or I'll be suspended, I call that forced.

Tea: You have to admit, you did need a break.

Del: You're as much of a workaholic as I am. Wouldn't it drive you nuts if you were forced to stop working?

Tea: You forget, I was forced to stop working when I was stuck on that island last year.

Del: You returned to work the first day you were back in civilization.

Tea: Not the first day.

Del: The second?

Tea: Okay, I'm a workaholic. I did survive my forced vacation, though. So will you.

Del: Will you at least let me chase after that criminal you were married to so I don't lose my mind waiting to get back to work?

Tea: If it means that much to you, we'll stay.

Del: It means a lot to you, too. I know it does.

Tea: I wish it didn't.

Del: Are you worried about him?

Tea: He's the one who should be worried.

Del: The boy won't know what hit him.

Tea: First, we have to find him.

Del: Besides this hotel, where else did you spend time together last year?

Tea: Does a deserted island count?

Del: Do you think Manning could be leading you back there?

Tea: Even Todd wouldn't dare to consider such a thing.

Del: Are you sure?

Tea: He knows how horrible it was being stranded on that island. He would have to be a complete moron to think I would ever willingly go back.

Del: So, there was nowhere else on this island that you spent time together?

Tea: Well, there was the marina where the boat was docked.

Del: Let's go.

[Del stands up.]

Tea: You don't think he would actually consider sending me back to that island, do you?

Del: You know him better than I do?

Tea: That's why I'm afraid to go further with this.

Del: We can stop right now.

[Tea stands up, a determined look on her face.]

Tea: No, I need to know. But, I guarantee that if that is his plan, I won't allow it to succeed. I'm never going back to that island again.

to be continued...
