NEVER AGAIN
chapter 27:
[Several hours later...
A knock on the door of his hotel suite interrupts Todd's sulking.]
Todd: Go away!
[Outside the door, Tea smoothes her hand over her hair, more nervous than she wishes she were.]
Tea: You invited me, remember?
[Todd angrily swings the door open.]
Todd: That was before you showed up here in the middle of the night, came on to me, and then walked out on me for no reason.
Tea: No reason?!
Todd: No good reason.
Tea: For the record, you are the one who came on to me.
Todd: I remember it differently.
Tea: You always do.
[Sensing that an invitation won't be offered, Tea takes the initiative and moves passed Todd, entering his suite.]
Tea: Are we having breakfast here, or downstairs in the restaurant?
Todd: I don't eat with people who betray me.
Tea: You must never eat, since you have always made a habit of betraying yourself, more often than anyone else.
[Todd finally closes the door and moves further into the room, enjoying having his ex-wife alone with him, but determined not to let her know it.]
Todd: What the hell does that mean?
Tea: It means that you always sabotage everything good in your life because you're afraid it will be taken away from you.
Todd: That doesn't make any sense.
[Todd plops down on the sofa. Tea disappoints him by sitting in a nearby chair.]
Tea: Making sense has never been your strong suit.
Todd: And, what do you think is my strong suit?
Tea: You don't want me to answer that question.
Todd: You're right. I hate it when you lie about all the good qualities you like to pretend I have.
Tea: You have many wonderful qualities.
Todd: If you want to eat, we'll eat. We have to do it up here, though.
Tea: Has Renee finally banned you from the restaurant?
Todd: They don't serve booze this early down there. I have an arrangement with room service so I can get you whatever you want.
Tea: I need to keep a level head today.
Todd: You're not going anywhere near any creep but me today, so get as trashed as you want.
Tea: You know why I need to meet Mitch Laurance.
Todd: No, I don't.
Tea: I need to know what happened to my mother.
Todd: She split on you and then she croaked.
Tea: Thank you for being so sensitive to my feelings.
Todd: You're welcome.
Tea: I was being sarcastic.
Todd: I'm serious, Delgado. Nothing that psycho could tell you would change anything. You'll just end up feeling lousier than you already do.
Tea: I don't think that's possible.
Todd: Do you feel worse now that you know she probably only split on you to protect you from that monster?
Tea: It has brought up some old feelings, but...
Todd: Exactly! All this can do is dredge up all that junk you're better off keeping buried.
Tea: I have to do this. I owe it to her.
Todd: She's dead. It won't change anything for her.
Tea: I hated her. I felt actual hatred for my mother. I need to know if I was wrong all these years.
Todd: You might end up hating yourself.
Tea: I can handle this.
Todd: If that's true, why are you so desperate for me to go with you?
Tea: I was hoping you would offer your moral support.
Todd: You'll need a hell of a lot more if you're going to confront that creep.
Tea: Will you come with me?
Todd: You're going to do it whether I'm there or not, right?
Tea: I could ask Antonio.
Todd: Why didn't you?
Tea: He wouldn't understand, the way you do.
Todd: And, you can't do that thing with your eyes, and your mouth, and your legs, to get him to do whatever you want.
Tea: I wasn't aware my eyes, mouth, or legs, had any effect on you.
Todd: Like hell!
[Tea joins Todd on the sofa and lightly kisses his cheek.]
Tea: Thank you. You won't regret this.
Todd: I already do.
[Todd stands up and grabs his jacket.]
Todd: Hurry up, before I change my mind.
Tea: I thought you wanted to have breakfast first.
Todd: Are you stalling?
Tea: Maybe.
Todd: Forget this, Delgado. Let it go.
Tea: This is about my mother. I can't let it go, any more than you could if the answers to why your mother left you were suddenly available to you.
Todd: Both my mothers left me because they didn't give a damn about me.
Tea: I know that's not true.
Todd: They both thought I wasn't worth fighting for.
Tea: If that's true, they didn't know you, not the way I do.
Todd: Delgado...
Tea: Later, we can argue about us. Right now, I need to face this. I need you to help me.
