chapter 236:
[Tea removes herself from Todd's lap.]
Todd: Did you change your mind?
Tea: If you really believe that our relationship is over, I don't want to do this anymore.
Todd: That's all I've been telling you the whole time we've been stuck in this stupid elevator. That didn't stop you from wanting it before.
Tea: Your words told me one thing, but the way you touched me...
[Todd reaches out to her in the dark. He locates her leg and moves his hand up her inner thigh. Tea pushes his hand away.]
Tea: Don't!
Todd: Isn't this the way I touched you before?
Tea: What kind of game is this?
Todd: You tell me.
Tea: I'm not playing any games with you. That's not my style.
Todd: Since when?
Tea: Since always. I have always wanted a relationship with you built on trust and honesty, not games and secrets.
Todd: If that were true, you wouldn't be keeping secrets from me.
Tea: What secrets am I keeping from you?
Todd: You tell me.
Tea: You're the one who has been dropping hints about something you won't fill me in on. If you think I've done something, tell me what it is.
Todd: You've been screwing around on me.
Tea: I would never...
[Todd moves away from her and stands up. Tea can't see him in the darkness, but she knows that he's pacing in the small space at the front of the elevator.]
Tea: Listen to me...
Todd: I've had enough of your lies.
Tea: I don't believe you.
Todd: You don't believe I'm sick of your lies?
Tea: I don't believe you believe that I've been with anyone else.
Todd: I believe it. I vividly believe every word of it.
Tea: Whose word? Who lied to you?
Todd: You did.
Tea: I haven't been with anyone else since we began this new phase of our relationship.
Todd: You can stop lying. I know all about it. I know about where he puts his hands...and his other body parts.
Tea: Where is this paranoia coming from?
Todd: It doesn't matter.
Tea: It matters to me. This relationship matters more to me than any relationship ever has in my life. Do you believe that?
Todd: I believe that you were happy with whatever loser you were cheating on me with. I also believe that you were miserable every time you were with me. That's what I believe.
Tea: You are so wrong about everything.
Todd: I don't make you miserable? I don't make you feel lonely? You don't feel used when you're with me?
Tea: Of course I don't.
Todd: Liar!
Tea: What can I do to convince you?
Todd: I don't want you to convince me anymore. Go and be with whatever creep you were with while I was gone. I won't stop you. You don't have to be afraid.
Tea: The only thing I'm afraid of right now is that I'll lose you. And, I swear to you that I never want to have any contact with John Sykes ever again.
Todd: Sykes?! You let that creep touch you again after what he did to you at the country club?
Tea: Of course I didn't.
Todd: Then, why are you bringing him up?
Tea: Because you just did.
Todd: I was talking about the creep you were with the whole time I was on vacation with my kid.
Tea: I wasn't with anyone while you were with Starr.
Todd: You can stop lying. I know all about it.
Tea: I swear to you, I wasn't with anyone while you were gone. How could I have been? I was on the telephone with you every night for hours. Remember?
Todd: Was he there with you while we were talking? Did you both laugh your asses off at me for being an idiot because I didn't have a clue that he was getting you off while you were saying all that junk to me?
Tea: The only man who got me off while we talked was you.
Todd: I wasn't in that bed with you.
Tea: Your voice was.
Todd: Whose body did you use?
Tea: No one's. I was alone.
Todd: Liar!
Tea: I know your paranoia has no bounds but try, just once, to believe in me. I wasn't with anyone while you were gone. I don't want to be with anyone but you for the rest of my life. Tell me you believe me. Tell me you still want what we have.

chapter 237:
[The ex-spouses avoid speaking to each other for several minutes.
Tea listens carefully to the sound of Todd's breathing as he paces near the front of the elevator. It is apparent to her that his anxiety level is rising with each additional minute they remain trapped in the elevator.]
Tea: Todd?
[He doesn't respond.]
Tea: I'm ready again. Are you?
Todd: You don't have to keep putting yourself through that.
Tea: It isn't torture, I assure you.
Todd: I don't believe you anymore.
Tea: How can you possibly doubt how much I enjoy having sex with you?
Todd: Don't say that kind of thing out loud. That maintenance chick is probably out there with her ear against the door.
Tea: I don't think so.
Todd: It's possible.
Tea: It's improbable. Perhaps we should hurry, though, before she does returns.
Todd: You don't have to.
Tea: I want to.
Todd: I'm not kicking the walls, yet. We can wait.
Tea: If we wait any longer, I'll be the one kicking the walls.
Todd: Are you freaked out about being trapped in this metal coffin?
Tea: I'm freaked out that I may lose you from my life. I have a limited amount of time with you as a captive recipient of my attempts to dissuade you from ending our relationship.
Todd: You think fucking me in a elevator will change anything?
Tea: I think it already has.
Todd: Then, you don't need to put yourself through that anymore.
Tea: I need to put the finishing touches on my argument for why you shouldn't throw away what we have.
Todd: Nothing you do will change my mind.
Tea: Will you allow me to try?
Todd: Sure. Whatever. It's not like I have anything better to do right now.
Tea: I just love it when you sweet talk me.
Todd: If you don't like the junk I say, give me somewhere to put my mouth so I can't say anything.
Tea: Where exactly did you have in mind?
Todd: You still like surprises, right?
Tea: I didn't enjoy the surprise I got when I returned home this morning and found you were throwing me out of my own home.
Todd: It's my home.
Tea: Legally, it's mine. You were my guest.
Todd: I think I'm losing the mood again.
Tea: No more legal talk.
Todd: No more talking at all.
Tea: Agreed.
[Todd drops to the floor of the elevator and moves toward where he knows she's sitting.]

chapter 238
[Moments later...
Tea is lying on the floor of the elevator, moaning in ecstasy. Todd's mouth is currently bringing her such pleasure that she doesn't care if there's a crowd of people listening outside the elevator doors. Nothing is important to her in this moment, other than the orgasmic way that he's making her feel.
When he finally removes his mouth from her trembling flesh, she's disappointed, until he surprises her by placing his body weight on top of her.]
Tea: Todd...
Todd: Do you want this?
Tea: More than anything.
[After Todd enters her, they both relax for a moment. Something about their bodies being joined has always felt more right to them than anything ever has.
Sensing that Todd shares the feeling of overwhelming intimacy that she has for him in this moment gives her courage.]
Tea: I love you, Querido.
Todd: Don't start.
Tea: You started this. I want you to finish. Then, I want you to start again. For the rest of our lives, I only want this.
Todd: This is the last time.
[Tea wants to try again to convince him that what they have is worth fighting for. She wants to pour her heart out to the stubborn man atop her. Todd speaks first, though, as he brings his mouth closer to her ear and whispers to her.]
Todd: This is the last time I'll ever get to show you how much being with you means to me. This has to end.
Tea: No.
Todd: I can't do this anymore. I can't put you through this ever again. Don't argue with me. You know I'm doing the right thing, for both of us. This hurts too much. I love you too much to keep hurting you.
Tea: I don't want this to end.
Todd: It has to. I'll always love you.
[Tea resigns herself to the reality that she won't be able to change his mind. Their relationship is over.
Todd's body moves slowly against hers as his lips tenderly kiss hers, savoring the last time they'll ever make love.]< BR>

chapter 239:
[Minutes later...
Todd continues to cover Tea's naked body with his own, not wanting to allow the final contact of their flesh to end. Their breathing is heavy as they both revel in the orgasmic release they just shared.
From outside the elevator, a noise disrupts the soon-to-be ex-lovers.]
Carol: Hello? This is Carol from maintenance again. Are you okay in there?
[Todd expects Tea to respond to their intruder, as she has in their past encounters with the unsuspecting woman, but Tea remains silent.]
Carol: Hello? I can hear your strained breathing. Are you running out of oxygen? Do you need medical assistance?
[Todd feels compelled to respond since Tea hasn't.]
Todd: We're fine. Go away and help someone else.
Carol: Why is your breathing so loud and haggard sounding?
Todd: My ex-wife and I have been stuck in this metal coffin a hell of a long time. Of course we're breathing differently, like anyone would when they've spent hours yelling at the person who ruined their life. Are you done being curious? Can we have some privacy so we can go back to screaming at each other in here without an audience out there?
Carol: Is the young lady okay?
Todd: Of course she is. What kind of question is that?
Carol: Why isn't she speaking for herself?
Todd: Hopefully she lost her voice yelling at me about never putting the damn toilet seat down, or whatever she's been yapping about. Maybe I can actually have some peace for the next few hours while we wait for you to finally get us out of this defective elevator.
Carol: The elevator isn't defective. We're experiencing a blackout. Our back-up generator malfunctioned but it's being repaired as we speak. It should only be a few more minutes before we have you out of there.
Todd: Great.
[The lack of enthusiasm in Todd's voice is noted by both women.
A disappointed Todd, removes himself from atop Tea's body and begins searching for his clothing in the dark.]

chapter 240:
[Several moments pass silently.]
Todd: Do you think she's gone?
[Todd's question is met with silence.]
Todd: Tea?
[Concern enters his voice as he panics at Tea's silence the last few minutes.]
Todd: Delgado? Answer me! If I hurt you...
Tea: You have hurt me.
Todd: I knew you were faking.
Tea: Faking what?
Todd: Never mind.
Tea: Were you really concerned that I had been hurt?
Todd: I always try not to hurt you. I always fail.
Tea: Emotionally, perhaps. Certainly not sexually.
Todd: I hurt your back that one time.
Tea: We made love in an awkward position.
Todd: I banged you hard against a wall.
Tea: It wasn't that hard. It was just...
Todd: It was a hard, fucking wall. Just admit it.
Tea: I enjoyed that fucking wall. So did you. Why don't you admit that?
Todd: I never said I didn't like what we've been doing.
Tea: But, you don't want to do it anymore. You want this elevator to be the last place we ever make love.
Todd: You'll probably be hurting later from this, too.
Tea: I'll be hurting because I'll be facing the rest of my life without you.
Todd: You'll probably run straight to the loser you've been cheating on me with.
Tea: I did not cheat on you. Why won't you believe me?
Todd: I know the truth.
Tea: Fill me in, finally, on this truth you think you've discovered.
Todd: What's the point?
Tea: The point is that I don't want our relationship to end this way. I need you to tell me where this paranoia is coming from.
Todd: Paranoia? Not this time. This time it's all your fault. You can't blame me for screwing everything up this time, not when you've been screwing some other guy behind my back.
Tea: I most certainly can blame you, if you continue to refuse to fill me in on why you're so upset. I know you still love me. I'm certain of that. I'm also certain that you know I never cheated on you.
Todd: You're a liar, too. I don't love liars or cheaters.
Tea: If you don't love me anymore, if you truly believe I've been having an affair, why did you make love to me so many times in this elevator?
Todd: I was trying to break my old record. That's all.
Tea: If that's all this means to you, why are you sad that we're about to get out of this elevator?
Todd: If you think I'm sad, you should see my face.
Tea: I'm looking forward to seeing your face again when the lights return. I've missed seeing your face while we've been stuck in the dark all this time. I'm hoping to continue seeing your face every day for the rest of my life.
Todd: That can be arranged.
Tea: You're finally willing to communicate with me so we can clear up this misunderstanding?
Todd: I'm willing to sell you a subscription to the Sun. My picture's in every edition.
Tea: You forget, I own part of the Sun now. We're business partners.
Todd: You promised you wouldn't use those shares you cheated me out of.
Tea: Kelly never would have sold her shares to you. You're lucky I was able to convince her to sell them to me.
Todd: How is it lucky that you're trying to steal my newspaper from me?
Tea: I'm doing no such thing. I've simply decided to check on my investment on a daily basis.
Todd: I'll buy you out. I'll double what you paid.
Tea: I can't sell, or give, my shares to you, remember? They would revert back to Kelly if I did.
Todd: Why are you doing this to me?
Tea: Why are you doing this to me? Until you answer that question, I'll be in your office every day.
Todd: I could give up the Sun.
Tea: And allow me, along with Asa, to make all the editorial decisions ourselves? I highly doubt that.
Todd: This is over between us. Why can't you just accept it and get over me?
Tea: You're not an easy man to get over. I've tried in the past. I don't intend to put myself through that again. You'll have to accept that I won't give up on us this time. I'm determined.
Todd: So am I.
Tea: Why? What happened to change your mind about us?
Todd: I found out what you really think of me.
Tea: I love you.
Todd: Loving me makes you feel lousy. I read everything you wrote about me in that thing you keep hidden in your closet.
Tea: Now this all makes sense. You invaded my privacy and read my journal.
Todd: I didn't invade anything. I own that closet.
Tea: If your penthouse is so precious to you, you can keep it. I'll find somewhere else to live.
Todd: You're giving up trying to steal my penthouse?
Tea: I'm giving up everything, Todd. I can't be in a relationship where nothing is private, not even my own thoughts.
Todd: You don't get to be angry at me. I'm the one who's angry at you, remember? I'm the one who got cheated on.
Tea: The man I was having an affair with while you were on vacation with your daughter was you, you moron. Didn't you recognize the description?
Todd: It didn't sound anything like me. I'm not handsome. I'm not good with my hands. I'm not any of the junk you wrote about.
Tea: The way I described you is exactly the way I view you. Or, I should say, the way I viewed you -- past tense.
Todd: What about the fact that I never screwed you in any of the places you wrote about?
Tea: They were fantasies. I missed you, so I wrote about us to help get me through those long nights without you.
Todd: You've got an answer for everything.
Tea: It's the truth.
Todd: You expect me to believe you?
Tea: Of course I don't expect you to have any faith in me. If you did, you never would have read my journal in the first place.
[The lights flicker back on. Tea and Todd are still adjusting to the sudden return of light, and trying to quickly adjust their clothing, as the elevator doors open.
Carol from maintenance openly stares at Todd's chest through his open shirt, not making any attempt to hide her appreciation of his physique.]
Carol: I take it you won't be needing any apologies from me for your inconvenience.
[Tea ignores Carol. She picks up her suitcases and turns toward her ex-husband.]
Tea: Good-bye, Todd.
[Todd takes hold of her arm and moves closer to her, uncomfortable with Carol's continued presence.]
Todd: Wait, Delgado. You said you'd come upstairs first, remember?
Tea: I'm no longer available to aid you in your sexual quest.
[Tea turns and confidently exits the elevator. Carol steps into the doorway of the elevator and strikes a seductive pose.]
Carol: I'm available.
