CHAPTER 109 |
PREVIOUSLY:
Tea: This isn't a one-way relationship. What you want matters, too.
Todd: I want to kiss you.
Tea: That's good, because I want to kiss you, too.
[They join in a nervous kiss, each anxious about the sexual adventure they're about to embark on together.]

IN SICKNESS
chapter 109:
[For many minutes they kiss, as they enjoy sharing their physical closeness.
When Tea finally puts an end to their kissing, they look into each other's eyes, each acutely aware of the other's anxiety about what may come next.]
Tea: Are you sure?
Todd: Whatever you want.
Tea: I want you to lie down.
[Todd lies back on the bed and watches as his wife, still straddling his lower body, lifts the shirt she's wearing over her head.]
Todd: I thought you wanted me to do that for you?
Tea: I could put it back on.
Todd: No way! I like the view the way it is.
[Todd reaches his hand out and touches the flesh of her expanding stomach.]
Todd: Is Manny awake?
Tea: You won't hurt him by making love to me.
Todd: I don't want to feel like a creep when I'm with you.
Tea: We can wait until after the baby's born to make love.
Todd: I don't want to wait. I know there's no way for him to know what's going on. I just hate thinking about all that other junk when I'm with you.
Tea: Is it possible to replace your bad memories with good ones?
Todd: I don't know. I know he never wanted that. He wanted me to feel lousy every second of every day for the rest of my life.
Tea: Your father is no longer in control of your life, or your mind. You can think about whatever you want to right now.
Todd: It's not that easy.
Tea: Try. Close your eyes.
Todd: I'll see that other stuff.
Tea: Try anyway.
[Todd closes his eyes. He quickly opens them again a few seconds later.]
Todd: I told you.
Tea: Close them again.
Todd: This won't work.
Tea: Try.
Todd: You've got me twisted around your finger. You know that, right?
[Todd closes his eyes again.]
Tea: Keep your eyes closed.
Todd: It's pointless.
Tea: Listen to my voice.
Todd: It's hard to ignore his voice.
Tea: Try. You're here in our motel room with me. Can you picture that?
[Todd opens his eyes.]
Todd: Why do you want me to close my eyes if that's what you want me to see?
Tea: Because, I want you to work on changing the images in your mind when the bad ones come at the wrong time.
Todd: This won't work.
[Todd closes his eyes again.]
Tea: Imagine one of your fingers is on a button that advances the images in your mind, like a slide show.
[Todd opens his eyes again.]
Todd: Just because you thought it worked when you played mind tricks on yourself while you were sick, doesn't mean it will work for me.
Tea: I got better, didn't I?
Todd: Did you?
Tea: Even if I am sick again, I think visualization did help me last time.
Todd: This is different.
Tea: I know. I just thought trying this might make you feel better, but if this is too uncomfortable for you, let's move on and make love...whatever way you are comfortable.
Todd: I'm not like you. I can't pretend all that junk didn't happen.
Tea: I'm not asking you to do that.
Todd: That's what it sounds like to me.
Tea: While I was sick...
Todd: I don't want to talk about that.
Tea: Visualizing didn't make me forget I was sick.
Todd: What did it do? What's the point?
Tea: The point is that those dark images from your past don't have to ruin our present.
Todd: Peter will never stop trying to screw up what we have.
Tea: He died a long time ago. He can't hurt us.
Todd: He never really died inside me. He's still in there, talking to me...reminding me.
Tea: Maybe it's time for you to do something about that.
Todd: No shrinks!
Tea: I visualized my cancer exiting my body and I got better.
Todd: Do you really think that's why you got better?
Tea: It couldn't hurt to try.
Todd: If it gets your hopes up and you end up disappointed in me again...
Tea: I will never be disappointed in you, as long as you continue to do whatever you need to do so that we can have the rest of our lives together.
Todd: Promise me you'll get the hell out of here if this starts to go bad.
Tea: I won't leave you.
Todd: Then, I'm not doing it. I won't risk you, or Manny.
Tea: Manny and I are fine. We'll continue to be fine as long as we're with you.
Todd: What if it gets out of control?
Tea: It can't. You're in complete control.
Todd: It doesn't feel that way.
Tea: I'm not trying to force you to do this.
Todd: That's not what I meant. Thinking about this stuff makes me feel like I did when I was a kid. I was never in control back then.
Tea: You are now.
[Todd takes a deep breath and closes his eyes.]
Tea: Where are you?
Todd: In a room at a run-down motel, with my nutty wife.
Tea: You can go anywhere in your mind that you'd like.
Todd: I want to be in a room at a run-down motel with my nutty wife...and I want her never to be sick again.
Tea: I want that, too.
[Todd opens his eyes again.]
Todd: Maybe you should be the one lying here doing this. You're better at it, anyway.
[Tea closes her eyes.]
Tea: Do you know what I see?
Todd: The back of your eyelids?
Tea: I see you and I in our home. Our kids are making noise and making messes.
Todd: Kids? Plural?
[Todd places his hand on Tea's bare stomach.]
Todd: Do you mean Starr, or are we having another one after Manny finally shows up?
Tea: I think we will have more.
Todd: How many?
Tea: Whatever feels right.
Todd: You'll be okay, right?
[Tea opens her eyes and looks in her husband's eyes.]
Tea: I think so.
Todd: Because you saw it in your head?
Tea: Because I feel it in my heart. Manny will be fine. We'll be fine. We'll have what neither of us have had an easy time finding. We'll have love.
Todd: And lots of time.
Tea: And lots of time.
[Todd sits up. His hands quickly encase her face as his mouth passionately seeks hers.]
to be continued...
