Chapter 60
The wind began to pick up and howl like a drowning wolf. It continued to beat against the south side of the house. The shutters pounded occasionally, startling the essence of the house. None of the guests awakened at the sounds, but instead fought off this nuisance. Sleeping time, this night was peaceful and wanted. Everyone was where they should be. Or were they?
A once quiet and peaceful setting was about to blow sky high. And like the wind, it mimicked it’s arrival. First slow and charismatic, but then growing in urgency and ferociousness.
Tea: (beginning to struggle and softly stirring at first) Get off me. Get off of me. (Her voice rising, her body beginning to flail) Not again. No, please, not again. Leave me alone. Just leave me alone.
By now, Todd had been thrust awake. He tried to gather his bearings, but his slumber had caught him off guard and now his peacefulness had just been jarred back into reality.
Todd: Tea. Wake up. You’re dreaming.
Tea: Get away, just get away.
Todd: Tea. Please wake up. You’re scaring me.
Marisa: What’s wrong with mommy? What are you doing to her?
Todd: I’m not doing anything to her. She’s okay. She’s just having a bad dream and I can’t wake her up yet.
Marisa: I want mommy to be okay. Are you going to hurt her too?
Todd: No kid. I’m not going to hurt your mommy. (To Tea) Wake up, Tea. Delgado. Can you hear me?
Starr: (from her room) What’s all the noise? What’s going on, daddy? Where are you?
Todd: (To Starr) Get in here quick. I’m in Marisa’s room. Get Marisa and take her back to your room.
Starr enters and sees the three of them in bed together. She takes Marisa by the hand and takes her back to her room. Todd now feels free to do whatever it takes to wake Tea up.
Todd: Tea? Can you hear me? Delgado?
Tea: Leave me alone (she slaps Todd hard across the face).
Todd: Do it again. You hit like a girl. Harder, Delgado. Get it all out.
Tea: Oh my God! What have I done? Todd, are you all right? Oh Dios Mio. I hit you, didn’t I?
Todd: You didn’t do anything to me that I didn’t deserve only lighter.
Tea: (turning away from Todd, crying into her pillow) What am I doing? What’s wrong with me?
Todd: Nothing that I can’t fix. Look, you had a bad dream and you hit me. No big deal.
Tea: It IS a big deal. I don’t hit people. I don’t desert people. I don’t kill…..
Todd: Stop it. You stop it right now. You do anything and everything you can to survive. To protect yourself and your loved ones. You protect them from evil. You do anything it takes to make it out alive on the other end.
Tea: But I don’t like the person I’m becoming on this other end. I don’t like me at all.
Todd: I think you’re pointing your anger at the wrong person. It’s me you don’t like at all.
Tea: That’s not true, Todd. It’s just not true.
Todd: Are you sure? Are you sure there’s not a part of you that wishes I ended up just like…
Tea: (cutting him off) Don’t you say it. Don’t you dare say his name. And don’t you dare think for one moment that what he did to me is anything like what you and I did. I …never mind.
Todd: You what? You and I what? Gave in to our primal instincts? Did what comes naturally?
Tea: We made love that night Todd and you know it. Don’t you dare make me ever regret THAT night.
Todd: But that night IS the night you regret. That’s the night it all started.
Tea: That’s not really true, I found out. There’s so much you and I need to say to each other, but not now. Not tonight. But I would like to know, how did we end up in bed together?
Todd: You looked cold, so I covered you up and I just happened to miss when I threw the covers on you and hit me too. Since I didn’t want to wake you, I just stayed.
Tea: Still can’t admit the truth?
Todd: Still can’t recognize the truth?
Tea: Your version of the truth maybe, but is it what everyone else would consider the truth?
Todd: Watch it counselor, you’re starting to sound like a counselor.
Tea: I am a counselor.
Todd: Right now, you’re a mommy and one who needs rest. I’ll leave you to that now.
Tea: Where will you go?
Todd: I’ve had my rest for the night. I’m going to go check the house and the girls. A storm moved in while we were sleeping and I need to make sure this place is secured.
Tea: So you do admit to sleeping?
Todd: I admit to resting my eyes for a few minutes. Got a problem with that?
Tea: No, but I’m not so sure sleep is what will help me now.
Todd: Then lay there and rest. Just be a lazy, fat cat.
Tea: I’m not fat.
Todd: Yeah. (Pausing) but I just got you to admit to being lazy.
Tea: I’m feeling better already. Dr. Manning, you do have quite a bedside manner.
Todd: And on that note, I’m outta here.
Tea: Don’t be surprised if I join you in your pacing. Because I know that’s exactly what you’ll be doing.
Todd: I will not. This house isn’t set up for pacing.
Tea: I’m surprised that wasn’t the first thing you did.
Todd: It’s not set up for pacing, but there’s this big ocean out back that’s great for it.
Tea: That sounds wonderful. I may just pace out back myself later on.
Todd: Later. Lots of time for everything.
Tea: Is there?
Todd waved a corny wave and with that left her in her quiet room, filled with her loud thoughts and overwhelming nightmares.
Tea: I’m sorry I hit you. I didn’t mean to. I know how that feels.
Todd: (Leaning against the wall, a tear slowly escaping his eye) I’m sorry I hit you. I didn’t mean to. I know how that feels too. I’m sorry I was the one that made you sad. I promise not to make you sad again.
When everyone awoke the next morning, Todd gathered up Starr’s clothes and took her back to the house next door. It was the next day before Tea realized Todd wasn’t coming back.
