Anthony Anholt
Smooth-talking, debonair actor from the sailing soap opera Howard's Way

BEST known as the smooth-talking millionaire bachelor Charles Frere in the BBC’s sailing soap opera Howard’s Way .

Howard’s Way, which ran from 1985 to 1990, was a glossy drama serial set along the River Hamble in the wealthy world of swanky yachts, powerboats and the marine business. The programme revolved around
Tom Howard (played by Maurice Colbourne), a former aircraft designer who took his career and the family funds into the boatyard industry.

Anholt’s career spanned stage, television and film. He joined the cast of the American mini-series Last Days of Pompeii, appeared in the West End productions of Boys in the Band, Death and the Maiden and Amadeus, and delighted many as Professor Higgins in the European tour of My Fair Lady. His other soap opera roles included Bill Law in Coronation Street and Nick Stevens in the illfated ferry-based show Triangle.
Early in his career, in the mid-1970s, Anholt appeared in the cult sci-fi television series Space 1999, which continued to earn him royalties for years afterwards. He was also seen in Only Fools and Horses and Juliet Bravo and as John Stonehouse in STV’s The Stonehouse Affair.

Anthony Anholt was born in Singapore of Anglo-Dutch descent. As a young child he was evacuated to Australia, and from there moved to South Africa before settling in Britain. His father, a prisoner on the Burmese railway, died when he was three, and his mother remarried five years later.

He left school at 18 and was soon teaching Latin at a prep school in Surrey. It was there that he met his first wife, Sheila, who taught the infants. In 1964 Anholt was working for a trade magazine and Sheila had a well-paid job in an advertising agency.

But Anholt, who had been keen on amateur dramatics at school, had always harboured a secret ambition to be an actor. Eventually he became involved with the Royal Court Theatre in London, but his first real break came at the Leas Pavilion, Folkestone, where he appeared in 26 plays in 27 weeks. His first West End appearance was as Larry in Boys in the Band at Wyndham’s Theatre in 1969.

Anholt’s first marriage ended in divorce in 1986. He married Tracey Childs in 1990 but in 1998 they,  were divorced. He is survived by a son from his first marriage, the actor Christien Anholt.

Tony Anholt, actor, was born on January 19, 1941. He died of a brain tumour on July 26, 2002, aged 61.
