TODD AND TEA’S BEDROOM

As he closed the door behind him he leaned against it for support as he looked for refuge, for Tea. She had undressed and was wearing his pinstriped pajama bottoms and a little, white tank-top as she brushed her hair in the mirror. His eyes were drawn to the smooth skin visible between the bottom of her tank and the drawstring of his pajama bottoms and he longed to touch her there and forget everything that was reeling through his head. The antique, silver hairbrush swept through the thick waves of her hair leaving her strands smooth and gleaming in its path and he longed to bury his face there and disappear into her hair and into her body and whisper “I love you” into her ear and make the world outside fade away the way it always did for him when he touched her. He pushed back against the door trying to keep the bedlam out of their room, trying to keep the chaos out of his head.

Tea noticed him watching her quietly in the mirror. She turned and stared at him but his eyes were not focused , just vacant and lost, as if looking inward. As she approached him she saw the color draining from his face as if some heinous image just passed before his eyes and he was transfixed and terrified. His lips turned white and they were trembling, struggling to say something, but nothing came out.

“Todd?”

He looked over at her at the sound of her voice, but suddenly turned and ran toward the bathroom. Tea dropped her hair brush on the floor and ran after him only to find him on his knees retching over the toilet as wave after wave of nausea pushed its way out of his body and he vomited violently.

“Oh, querido, what’s wrong?” she asked anxiously as she kneeled beside him and placed her arm around him and held his hair back affectionately as the contents of his stomach spilled out of him. Finally Todd was empty and he turned around and sat on the cold, white tiled floor and leaned his aching head against the hard pedestal sink, feeling the cold, hard reality of Starr’s secret. Tea got up, flushed the toilet and wet a face cloth in the sink. She sank beside him and wiped his forehead and his mouth tenderly.

What’s wrong, me amor. Tell me, please. Did Starr know something?”

Todd looked at her, his eyes watering as he nodded his head. She caressed his face and stroked his hair reassuringly.

“I know what the missing piece is Tea. The answer to the mystery. The solution to the riddle.”

Tea sat beside him and took his hand.

“What is it?”

Todd took her hand and crushed it against his lips. He pulled her into his arms and gasped softly into her shoulder as if trying to gather the strength to say the words. When he pulled away from her, he looked into her eyes and shook his head.

“There’s no baby. There’s no baby, Tea.”

“What do you mean, Todd? I don’t understand?” she said, looking completely confused.

“ Tea...there’s no baby! There hasn’t been a baby for a while. I mean...there was a baby. I remember talking to Larry Wolek about the paternity...he checked her out...but she must have lost it. It all makes sense, don’t you see. She lost it, and she’s been faking her pregnancy until she could...buy...until she could buy a baby...and than she was going to pass it off as mine.”

Tea’s hand covered her mouth as tears flooded her eyes. As she stared at her devastated lover she processed his words and then closed her eyes with the ugly realization. Yes, it all made some sense--ugly, tragic sense. She put her arms around him and they sat there for a while rocking and comforting each other.

“My baby’s dead, Tea,“ cried Todd into her hair. “I didn’t even want it....I didn’t want her kid...and now its dead.”

Tea pulled away from him and took his face in her hands.

“You listen to me. This is not your fault, Todd. Don’t do this! Don’t take this guilt on yourself. You were taking responsibility for this child...you didn’t do anything wrong. Do you hear me? We don’t know what happened, but if it had been your fault you can be damned sure Blair would have thrown it in your face in a second.”

Todd seem to rise out of his stupor when Tea said her name and he stood up quickly, practically knocking her over and headed for the bathroom door.

“I’m going to kill that lying bitch!” he shouted.

Tea shot up and followed him.

“Todd wait !Wait! Don’t go looking for her like this. Wait, please,” she said holding on to his arm, but he wrenched it away violently and headed for the door. She ran ahead and placed herself in front of it.

“Get out of my way, Tea!” he shouted.

“Todd, please! Listen to me, you have to calm down. Think of Starr and Leo. Think of me. Please, Todd. Don’t go to see her like this. If you hurt her it will only hurt us!! Don’t you see that?”

Todd stared at her, bursting with fury as he threw his head back and a deep groan escaped from his lips as he stood in the middle of the room with clenched fists, labored breathing and his head shaking continuously.

“So what, Tea? She just gets away with it? She just gets to do this...to me...to Starr... to our lives and just walk away?” he shouted.

“No! She doesn’t get away with it because we know. Todd she gets nothing! She’s lost everything! She lost you, she lost Starr and she even lost her baby. Todd, think about it. What else can she do to us?”

“I don’t know, Tea. But I’m not going to wait and find out,” he said, a little calmer.

She walked away from the door and into his arms.

“I understand your need to confront her, querido, you have earned that right. But talk to me a little first, please. Tell me what you intend to do.”

Tea lead him to their bed and he sat with her. His muscles were tight as his fists.

“Todd...do you know how long it’s taken us to get here? All the time we’ve spent apart...alone,” she said as she touched his face and his lips.

Todd looked into her eyes, remembering the emptiness of his life without her-- recalling the months of agony followed by numbness that eventually lead him to Blair.

“Yeah...I remember,” he said sadly.

“Are you willing to risk that, Todd? Are you willing to give all of this up for one fleeting moment of revenge on Blair? I love you. I want a long life with you and Leo and Starr and maybe...even more children. Please, don‘t take that away from me. I’m begging you. You said I could count on you. Prove it! Prove it to me, mi vida. Show me that you‘re love for me...for us...is more powerful than your hatred for her.”

He looked deeply into her eyes as she waited for a reply. He threw up his hands and slapped them down on the bed.

“Alright, Tea....I won’t kill her...I won’t hurt her...so what do I do, ha? Slap her on the wrist? Thumb my nose at her? Take her to court? What do I do, Tea!”

“You go and tell her that her game is up! Tell her that you know that she has no power over you! That she can’t hurt us anymore. And then you come back home to your children...and to me. That’s what you do!”

Todd stared at her then fell back on the bed, moaning with frustration. Tea was right, he knew that in his brain, but he wasn’t a rational man and this need for revenge was deeply ingrained in his psyche. He could feel the warm, simmering energy of rage subdividing in every cell in his body and slowly taking over--that ugly adrenaline rush that was so familiar to him because he could barely control it. It was stronger than him.

But then Tea laid down beside him and put her arms around him and his rage slowly gave way to her softness, her serenity. His muscles relaxed as she touched his face with her warm fingers and said, “I love you, Todd,” and suddenly the flood of his rage was dammed and he floated in the calm and soothing waters of her love. His features softened as he looked at her face and finally his tense lips broke into a little smile.

“You think you’re so smart, Delgado...you think you‘ve soothed this savage beast in me, ha?” he said, leaning in and kissing her passionately, almost brutally, as the pent up adrenaline pumped into his veins and rushed through his body releasing itself in this long, powerful kiss. His mouth crushed and devoured hers, his tongue struggled to dominate hers, his energy dispersing inside of her until it was all used up and they exploded and parted, falling back on the bed, panting breathlessly and smiling at one another.

“The only beast I want to see, is in my bed...I can handle him, amor,...but not some bloodthirsty creature only bent on destruction and revenge because he has nothing else to make him feel. That’s not you, Todd...not anymore. ”

“I’m just a hot head, right?”

Tea smiled at him.

“Yes, you are. My beautiful and sexy hothead.”

Todd sighed, stood up and ran his hands through his hair, taking long, deep breaths.

“Okay. I’m going to go and see Blair now. And Tea, I’m not letting her see Starr...at least not for a long time.”

“Frankly, Todd, I don’t think Blair’s is in her right mind. You said yourself that she’s been acting strange lately. Be careful, okay?”

“Yeah. I’ll be back in a little while,” he said as he headed for the door.

He turned around and looked back at her sitting on the bed in his pajama bottoms and a little tank top, glowing with some mystical energy source that he needed. He stepped back across the room with two giant steps and picking her up in his arms, pressed her against him and held her tightly trying to absorb her power--to recharge himself with her essence. He pulled away from her and held her face in his hands.

“Te quiero mucho ,adorada,” Todd said in perfectly accented Spanish.

“Te quiero mas, adorado” she said, smiling up at him, thrilled by his use of her language.

“Nunca! Never!” he said, kissing her forehead and then walking out their door.
