chapter 45
RJ’S CLUB

“RJ!” screamed Blair, walking into the empty club. “RJ!”

RJ came running out of his office as if someone had yelled fire.

“What is it? Why are you screaming my name at the top of your lungs Blair?” he said angrily.

Blair walked up to him looking frantic.

“Something’s happened, RJ...something that changes everything!”

RJ lead her to a table and sat down with her.

“You already told me, remember? Todd and Tea moved into the penthouse together and took Starr. Is that what you mean?”

Blair just stared at him and shook her head.

“They have a baby, RJ! A little boy! Todd and Tea have a child together!”

He sat back in his chair and shook his head slowly, his braids slipping and sliding softly around his shoulders. Getting up and pacing around a little, he put his hands in his pockets and walked back over to her.

“I’m calling this off. It’s over, Blair.”

Blair shot up so quickly her chair fell over and the noise echoed loudly in the empty place.

“No! I’m having this baby!”

“Well you go ahead and have it, but I’m out of this. Do you hear me, Blair? I want out?”

“Well, you can’t get out! I paid you one hundred thousand dollars, RJ?”

RJ walked right up to her face.

“Oh, yeah? Prove it?”

Blair stared at him and realized she didn’t even know the name of the lawyer he was using.

“You can’t do this to me RJ! I thought you wanted to fuck Todd and Tea over...that’s what you said!”

“Well, Blair, how am I suppose to do that now? He won’t marry you...so I get no money! He’s with Tea...so he gets the girl! And they have a fucking kid, Blair? And to do all this for the thrill of fucking you is not worth going to prison for, sorry....so what am I getting out of this now, ha? I went into this thinking you could get Todd back...that was the deal...and you can’t. Face it, Blair, it’s over!”

“NO!” she screamed out, her fists clenched. “No!” she yelled as she started pounding on her stomach in a fit of hysterical rage. RJ ran over and held her hands tightly trying to prevent her from hurting herself as she finally relented and collapsed into his arms. He walked her back into his office and laid her on the sofa as she gasped and cried softly.

“She’s taken everything from me, RJ! She has Todd. She has Starr. She even has our son. Tea Delgado has stolen my whole life!” she said, in between fits of sobbing.

RJ paced around unsure of what to do, of who to call. In her present state she’d probably blurt their plan out to whoever would listen and even though there was no proof, it could still come back to haunt him. Specially with Artie Vogel in the picture. He had to keep her calm.

“Can I get you something, Blair? Coffee? Anything?”

Blair had become strangely quiet, almost catatonic and deep in thought. When she heard his voice she looked up at him, seemingly startled by his presence. She sat up and looked around, slowly becoming aware of her surroundings again. Cool. Cunning. Frightening.

“Coffee...coffee. Yes, RJ, I’d love some coffee...cream and sugar, please,” she said smiling.

RJ was thoroughly confused, but he nodded and left the office.

Blair got up and paced around slowly, trying to focus--to keep her sanity from drifting--looking around at the walls and at the ceiling trying to find something to use, something to hold on to. She looked at the top of RJ’s desk and fingered his rolodex and his phone. She started opening his drawers one by one, as if she hoped to find something, but all she saw were office supplies. Pencils. Pens. Paperclips. Gun.

Blair stared into the bottom drawer and picked up a heavy, silver and black handgun. The icy titanium felt cold and hard against her palm. She knew a little about guns and examining it closely, feeling the weight in her hand, she checked the safety and pulled out the magazine, finding it fully loaded. The long barrel was smooth and silvery and the grip, textured and black. Putting her finger on the trigger, she aimed toward the door and cocked it.

Having a child had made her an advocate against firearms, but at this very moment this gun looked like an old friend to her--solid and loyal, capable and dependable. As she brought it close to her face she heard a sound coming from deep inside the dark hole of the barrel and it seemed to whisper, “I can help you, Blair.”
Startled, she let the gun drop on top of the desk, but it beckoned her and slowly she picked it up again.

“What did you say?”

Holding the barrel close to her ear, she heard a deep, comforting voice that rushed by her like a gust of cold wind. “I can help you, Blair,” she heard again.

As the dark power emanated from its dark abyss, it infused her with a new strength and resolve as she stared into the bottomless pit of its sinister depths. Her body relaxed and suddenly she felt lucid and re-energized, her objective seemed so clear, and so fated.

Hearing footsteps, she quickly closed the drawer and ran to the sofa, carefully placing the gun in her purse, just as RJ entered the office with a cup of coffee in his hand.

“Here you are, Blair. Jamaican Blue Mountain, my favorite blend.”

Blair took the coffee with cool, steady hands and took a few sips.

“U-u-m-m, delicious, RJ. This is exactly what I needed.”

RJ watched her and was rather surprised at her composure. A few minutes ago, she seemed totally irrational and demented and suddenly she was perfectly calm. A shiver ran threw him and all his instincts told him that she had snapped--fallen off the edge of sanity--but he continued to reason with her instead.

“Listen, Blair, I didn’t mean to come down so hard on you. It’s just that...well...frankly, I’m a little worried about your state of mind. I don’t think you have gotten over losing your kid...you need to deal with it. You need to talk to someone about this. And you need to tell Todd. You can’t go on like this.”

“You’re so right RJ. I’ve been living in a fantasy world. And I need to get on with my life...so I’ve decided to tell Todd the truth...afterall...what can he do to me now?”

“Good. That’s good. Look I’ll try to get your money back...but I probably won’t be able to get all of it. This guy gets rid of it pretty quickly.”

“Thanks, RJ,” she said getting up and clutching her purse to her chest. “I need to go now. I need to collect my thoughts before I see Todd.”

RJ walked her through the club and to the door.

“I’ll call you, Blair.”

“Thanks RJ, for giving me exactly what I needed to make everything right,” she said, giving him a kiss on the cheek and walking out the door.

RJ stood there for a while. Something didn’t feel quite right and he felt uneasy about her easy surrender, but he was too relieved that it was over, too reluctant to give it any more thought right now.
