LIES FEARS & LOVE BY TROG |
CHAPTER 42 |
chapter 42
Blair paced back and forth in front of RJ’s door like a mad dog--rabid and caged. She had called his club and he wasn’t in tonight and she had been waiting for over an hour. It was after eleven and he wasn’t home yet, but just as she was about to leave she noticed his green Jaguar pulling into the driveway.
As he walked up to the doorway he was startled by her as she jumped out of the shadows, her eyes wild and her face wired and tired.
“What the hell are you doing here!”
“I needed to see you and it couldn’t wait. Where the hell have you been, RJ, I’ve been waiting here for hours, freezing my ass off.”
RJ shook his head and opened his door, letting her in.
“If you must know Blair I had a dinner date with a beautiful woman. Some of us actually have a life,“ he said, turning on a light in the living room. “So, Blair what’s today’s big catastrophe?”
Blair sat on the sofa and looked around at the contemporary decor and the orderly neatness of the place. It reflected RJ’s personality, his love for cleanliness, for precision and controlling details. She leaned her head back against the cushions and looked up at the ceiling.
“Todd left me!”
“Oh...again?” said RJ with a roll of the eyes.
She shot him a hostile look, her mouth slack and trembling.
“This time for real. He moved Tea into the penthouse with him and he took Starr!” she said bitterly.
RJ shook his head.
“Well...I guess this gig is up!”
Blair stood up.
“No! I’m not giving up now!”
“Are you out of your fucking mind? You’ve got nothing he wants, Blair?”
She put her hands to her belly.
“I’m having his baby!”
RJ stormed over to her and lifting her dress unceremoniously yanked the pillow out and held it in front of her face.
“You’re not pregnant, Blair! Do I have to keep reminding you? Even with a kid on the way he doesn’t want to stay with you...this scam is pointless. Let’s just cut our losses and walk away from this one.”
“No! No! No!” she screamed grabbing the pillow from him and holding it like a child in her arms. “Todd will come back to me when I have his baby.”
RJ stared at her and took a few deep breaths realizing that he wasn’t getting through to her. He walked her gently toward the sofa and sat her down, then sat beside her. Looking into her frightened eyes, he sensed that her grasp on reality was tenuous at best. Taking her hand he turned her face to his trying to get her to focus.
“Blair, listen to me. Todd does not love you and it doesn’t matter whether you deliver a baby or not...he doesn’t want to be with you. So getting a baby now is rather pointless....do you understand?’
Blair stared at him and nodded softly.
“What you have to do is tell him the truth...that you lost the baby.”
Blair stood up.
“I can’t do that RJ...than I’ll have nothing. Besides than he’ll think I’m a liar...and he won’t trust me ever again...and he probably won’t let me near Starr. I need a baby, RJ. Please...please, RJ, I need that baby.”
RJ covered his face with his hands in frustration and shook his head. For quite a while he had suspected her instability, but now he was convinced of it. She was completely irrational and there was no getting through to her.
“Blair I just don’t think Todd will come back to you...even with a baby.”
Blair sat down again, but this time she sat closer to him, her lips almost brushing his face as she spoke.
“Yes...he will, RJ! He always comes back to me in the end...back to me and Starr...we’re a family,” she said, slipping her hand onto his thigh. “And RJ, I’ll do anything you want...as long as you get me what I want.” Caressing his thigh she slid her hand upward before RJ shot up and moved away from her. The thought of sleeping with Blair in this postpartum desperation suddenly seemed repugnant to him. Revenge on Todd had motivated his lust for her, but now, knowing Todd didn’t want her along with her mental instability just made this whole situation revolting. Smelling Blair’s desperation quelled any arousal he may have felt for her in the past.
“Look, Blair, why don’t you go home. You look exhausted and you need to get some perspective and some rest. I promise we’ll talk tomorrow okay?”
Blair stood up and nodded her head.
“You’re right. We need to sleep on it and come up with a new plan. Thanks RJ...I’ll see you tomorrow.”
RJ walked her to the door and let her out. He walked back in made himself a drink and laid back on the sofa. Dinner with Nomi Parker tonight had been incredible. It had been so long since he had felt this way about someone--not since Tea. Being with a woman who only wanted the pleasure of your company was a good feeling for a change. He had almost forgotten how good a pair of shiny and beautiful dark eyes smiling from across the table could feel. Nomi was so substantial, so decent and so much damn fun and the last thing he needed was Blair hanging around messing things up. Blair had become a rather burdensome albatross and he had to figure out how to cut her loose and disentangle himself from her rope.
“What the hell have I gotten myself into.”
