PILOT, PA

Tea stared at the sign outside Artie Vogel’s office, adjusting the very short skirt of her tight, red suit and carrying a briefcase. She entered the office and walked up to the reception area where a young, blonde woman with blue streaks in her hair was chewing gum as she chatted on the phone. A plaque on her desk read “Ms. Dicky” on it. The place looked a bit shabby and their were sloppy piles of files and records everywhere. The receptionist noticed Tea and hung up quickly.

“Yeah, honey, what can I do for you,” she said to Tea as she cracked her chewing gum.

Tea smiled and extended her hand.

“Hello, my name is Tea Delgado. I’m an attorney from New York and I’ve just moved to Llanview. I was hoping to speak with Mr. Vogel about a job. I have many years of experience and speak fluent Spanish.”

“You should have made an appointment, honey, Mr. Vogel is very busy, you know. Let me go and see if he can see you,” she said getting up. Her white, 4-inch heels tapped loudly against the shiny black, linoleum floor as she made her way down the corridor and entered a door at the end..

A few moments later, Ms. Dicky came tip-tapping back.

“You’re in luck honey, he said to go right in,” she said smiling, oblivious to the red streak of bright pink lipstick smeared across her front teeth.

Tea thanked her and made her way down the hall. When she entered the office she noticed Artie Vogel sitting behind his desk buried behind more stacks of sloppy paperwork. He was wearing a cheap, gray suit and wore little round glasses that seemed too small for his large, fleshy face. His head was bald and shiny accept for a few thick strands of hair combed strategically over his head--like a stringy headband. When he looked up and noticed her he stood up suddenly, dropping his pen, and eyeing her up and down, his gaze fixated on her legs.

Tea smiled radiantly and walked toward him.

“Mr. Vogel. Thank you for seeing me like this without an appointment,” she said, shaking his sweaty hand.

“My pleasure, Ms. Delmonico, please have a seat, have a seat, ” he said with a lecherous grin.

“Actually it’s Ms. Delgado, Tea Delgado,“ she said, sitting down and crossing her legs seductively as she removed a resume from her briefcase, handing it to him. Artie glanced at it quickly before sitting back and staring at her bare thighs.

“I can see you’re a well qualified attorney, Ms. Delgado, well qualified. But what brings you to me?”

“Well, I’ve only been in town a few weeks and I’ve heard wonderful, admirable things about you , Mr. Vogel, and I’d love to be a part of that.”

Artie Vogel sat back and smiled, lapping up her flattery and noticing the shiny, smooth skin of her knees.

“Well, Ms. Delgado, I’m not surprised, I‘m not surprised. I don’t mean to brag, but I happen to do more pro bono work than any other lawyer around. I give back to my community, back to my community.”

Tea smiled up at him admiringly, noticing his penchant for repeating phrases.

“Yes, that’s the sort of thing I want to do. Tell me, what type of law do you specialize in?” she asked.

Artie walked around the desk and leaned his back against the desk, staring down at the hem of her skirt which just barely covered her upper thighs.

“Well, I do a lot of...uh...personal injury work...defending your working stiff type of thing and I admit that’s pretty lucrative work...it pays the bills if you know what I mean, but my pro bono work is strictly in family law...in the area of adoptions. I handle adoptions for unwed mothers living in shelters and homes...and I take no money, no money from those poor young girls, and only charge the adoptive parents nominal legal costs. It’s work that warms my heart and gives profound meaning to my life and profession, profound meaning,” he pontificated.

“That is so noble, Mr. Vogel. I admire you so much for that,” she said.

His phone rang suddenly and he excused himself, reaching around to answer it.

“Candy...I mean Ms. Dicky, please hold all my calls until I finish with Ms. Delgado,” he said hanging up quickly and smiling back at her.

“So your practice is limited to personal injury and adoptions?”

“Yes, I find my pro bono work keeps me so busy, so busy that I hardly have time for anything else, but sadly, Ms. Delgado, I don’t have the financial resources to hire another attorney. So you see I’d love to hire an attorney with your legs...uh...I mean experience...but, alas, I can’t.”

Tea gets up, feigning disappointment.

“Well, that’s too bad...but I completely understand,” she said giving him her hand. “Thanks for your time, Mr. Vogel.”

As she started for the door he grabbed her arm.

“You know Ms. Delgado, if you’re knew in town perhaps I could introduce you to some colleagues...it might help you with your job search.”

“Oh, that would be wonderful, Mr. Vogel.”

“Please, call me Artie. And why don’t we get together over dinner?”

“I’d love that,” she smiled at him sweetly.” And please, call me Tea.”

“Well....Tea....how about tomorrow night?”

“Tomorrow night would be perfect...where can I meet you?”

“There’s a great little Italian place in the old town center called “Giordano’s”, do you know it?”

“Oh, yes, I know it,” said Tea smiling, remembering it was the place she and Todd had eaten in.

“Well, how about seven o’clock.”

“I’ll be there,” said Tea with a saucy wink as she headed out the door.

Tea waved to Ms. Dicky as she headed out the front door and she turned one last time to see Artie Vogel’s head sticking out from his doorway, smiling and waving. She waved at him and left.
