chapter 32

LLANVIEW, HOSPITAL

Todd pulled open the door to Dr. Parker’s office and walked in. Dr. Parker was sitting across from a very pregnant woman with dark, spiky hair, and they both looked up, startled to see him.

“Mr. Manning, what is the meaning of this? I’m with a patient and I must ask you to leave, right now,” she said , getting up angrily.

“I need to talk to you...it can’t wait!”

The young, pregnant woman got up with some difficulty, and clutched her stomach.

“It’s okay, Dr. Parker, I need to use the bathroom again for the 20th time, so I’ll leave you and be back in ten minutes,” she said as Todd opened the door for her, then closed it, facing Dr. Parker.

“Mr. Manning I don’t appreciate you barging in without an appointment while I’m in the middle of a conference with a patient!”

“Tough! I need some answers about my kid, and I think I have some rights here!”

Dr. Parker shook her head and sat down behind her desk.

“Mr. Manning, I’ve told you before, I can’t tell you anything about Ms. Cramer’s condition--it’s confidential. I can’t help you.”

Todd walked closer to her desk.

“I know you can’t tell me anything about what you told Blair, but can you tell me what you didn’t tell Blair?”

Dr. Parker looked confused.

“I don’t understand what you mean, Mr. Manning.”

Todd sat down opposite her.

“If Blair said that you told her something about her condition, and you never said it, could you tell me?”

Dr. Parker stared long and hard at him. She didn’t want to compromise her medical ethics but she certainly wouldn’t support someone lying about her diagnosis.

“First of all let me just tell you that I will not discuss any aspect of her medical condition with you and will refuse to answer any question regarding that. Now, what do you want to ask me?”

Todd took a few deep breaths. If she refused to answer his question it could be that Blair was telling Tea the truth and suddenly he was filled with anxiety.

“Blair said that her baby...my baby...has...Down’s syndrome. She said she had an amniocentesis and that you gave her this diagnosis a few weeks ago. Is this true?”

Dr. Parker, stared at Todd, then closed her eyes, letting his words sink in. Suddenly she felt very violated by Blair Cramer and struggled to control her anger. Finally, she looked up at Todd.

“I never gave Ms. Cramer an amniocentesis, or diagnosed your child with Down’s syndrome,” she said calmly and clearly.

Todd sat back and sighed with obvious relief. Getting up, he walked to her desk and in a rare show of magnanimity, extended his hand to her.

“Thanks, Doc...” he said.

Dr. Parker, stared at his hand, then shook it firmly.

“And Mr. Manning, I’m no longer Ms. Cramer’s doctor, so I’d appreciate it if you stop bursting into my office unannounced.”

Todd smiled, nodded, and walked out.

DORIAN’S MANSION

Blair paced around the room nervously as Starr lay on the floor coloring dinosaurs in vivid greens and yellows in the pages of her coloring book. Todd hadn’t been around for a few days and she wasn’t sure what to expect from him. Things had gone well with Tea--she swallowed her story hook, line and sinker--she could tell. Yes, playing on Tea’s sense of ethics had been a stroke of genius and there’s no way she would take Todd away from her and Starr under such tragic circumstances.

“Hi,” said Todd standing in the doorway, carrying a white, plastic bag.

Blair turned around to face him. He seemed very calm and quiet, not at all upset as she had expected.

“Hi, Daddy,” shouted Starr jumping up and giving him a hug.

“Hi, Blair...how are you feeling?” he managed to ask with sincerity.

Blair smiled, stunned by his civility.

“Couldn’t be better.”

“What’s in the bag, Daddy?”

“I picked up some videos. I thought maybe we could watch them together since I’ve been so busy lately...at work...I thought we could watch them together,” he said looking at Blair. “You, me...and your mother.”

Blair was beaming.

“What a great idea, Todd. We really don’t spend enough time together.”

Todd nodded quietly and watched her.

“Mommy, can we make some popcorn...just like at the real movies?” asked Starr turning to her mother.

“Sure, honey, that’s a great idea. Why don’t you go into the kitchen and see if we have any in the house.”

“Okay,” she said, running off.

Todd walked in and put the bag on the coffee table.

“That was a great idea, Todd...the videos.”

“Yeah, well I owe Starr. I mean I really upset her...about the wedding and all.”

“Well, you upset me too. I thought we were going to be a family, and then next thing I know Tea Delgado shows up and you change your mind.”

Todd put his hands in his pockets and looked down at the floor.

“Yeah...well...maybe I was wrong about that. She doesn’t want me back...and besides the truth is...we were never right for each other. You know, Blair, I really don’t want to talk about this. I just want to spend some time with Starr...and with you...and our baby. Okay?”

Blair smiled and walked over to him, giving him a cautious embrace making sure to keep her arm in between her stomach and his body. Todd looked over her shoulder and rolled his eyes as he patted her on the back . Staring at her neck, he resisted the urge to put his hands around her throat and strangle her after what she did to Tea and how she had used their unborn child so ruthlessly.

“That’s fine, Todd, no pressure. We don’t have to discuss...marriage if you don’t want to.”

“Maybe we can talk about it...just not tonight okay, I‘m just not in the mood. And let’s keep Starr out of it until we decide for certain, okay?”

“Sure,” she said smiling. “I’m going to go and check on that popcorn.”

As she walked away, humming with happiness, Todd was filled with contempt for her. He was raging inside, but he stayed cool. Tea was right, it was best to let her believe what she wanted for now.
