chapter 19
DORIAN’S MANSION, LLANVIEW
The house felt as empty as she did. Blair wandered around trying to amuse herself while she waited for Todd and Starr to return from the zoo. She had wanted to join them but Todd insisted that it was a father/daughter outing and had successfully shut her out. They were growing further apart and she didn’t know how to stop the bleeding. Something had changed with him. At least a few weeks ago he had seemed to want a family with her and Starr, but now he was cold as ice to her. It had to be Tea, she was the spoiler. She had to be sure.
Blair was startled by a sudden knocking. She looked up and saw RJ Gannon looking through the glass windows of the patio doors. She rushed over and opened them.
“Are you out of your mind, RJ? You can’t be seen here?”
RJ smiled and pushed past her into the living room.
“Relax Blair, I know Todd’s not here. I came from the back, you forget I know my way around this place--Dorian and I go way back,” he said as he poured himself a scotch from a square, lead-crystal bottle at the bar.
He took a swallow and looked back at her noting her sour expression.
“Well, you don’t look very happy for a woman who’s got everything she wants.”
Blair walked over and poured herself a drink--one of the advantages of not being pregnant.
“Todd didn’t come home again last night! That’s 3 nights now he hasn’t slept in his room.”
“His room,” laughed RJ, “ you’re not even sleeping with him? My, my Blair you must be losing your touch.”
Blair gulped her drink down and threw him a sneer.
“What do you want RJ? Did you get me what I needed?”
“I’m working on it. I put some feelers out. I should be hearing something soon.”
“Good, because if I don’t have a baby in a few months, I’ve got nothing.”
RJ walked over to her and came very close to her.
“It seems to me if the man isn’t in your bed, and he’s not even here at night, a baby is the least of your problems.”
“Something is off! I can feel it! I’m telling you it has something to do with Tea!”
“Tea’s in New York! What makes you think he’s seeing her?”
Blair paced around the room, her hands clutching her spiky hair.
“I’m not sure. But I have to know what I’m up against. RJ you have to help me?’
“What? I’m getting you a baby, isn’t that enough?”
She walked over to him and stroked his arm sweetly, softening her voice.
“Come on, RJ, we’re partners. We gotta help each other out.”
RJ grabbed her arm sharply and pulled her against him. pressing his body suggestively to hers .
“Yes, Blair, we are partners, and soon to be strange bedfellows,” he said leaning into her face.
Blair yanked her arm away from him harshly as he laughed out loud.
“You’re disgusting!” said Blair.
“Yes, I am. And it takes one to know one....” he said.
“Look RJ, if I don’t know what Todd is up to, I won’t be needing a baby! Can’t you find out where he’s been spending his nights? I need to know.”
RJ swallowed his drink and moved close to her again.
“I guess I could see what Todd is up to. But I have to tell you Blair, that wedding night of ours better be worth it,” he said reaching out his hand and pulling her face to his violently.
His mouth locked on to hers roughly, his jagged beard grazing her skin, and his hand gripped the back of her head so that she could not easily disengage herself. Finally she pulled away, shaking with fear as he laughed at her.
He walked back toward the patio doors.
“I’ll see what I can do, Blair, but I’m keeping a tab on all these extra favors, and I expect you to pay up when the time comes,” he said, smiling wickedly before he let himself out.
Blair wiped her mouth in disgust. What the hell had she gotten herself into. RJ Gannon was a dangerous man, she could feel it, but she had no one else to turn to.
She walked up stairs and into her bedroom. Noticing her image in the full length mirror she started to undo the buttons that ran down the front of her pink maternity blouse. As she opened her blouse she pulled the small, white round pillow out from within the elastic band of her gray slacks and looked longingly at her stomach. She rubbed her hands against its flatness. Accept for some loose skin no one would have guessed she had ever been pregnant. Staring into her own eyes she saw a stranger looking back, a woman she no longer recognized--a woman who had forgotten how to be soft and vulnerable, a woman who had forgotten how to trust and how tell the truth.
She picked up the pillow again and pulled the elastic of her pants outward to place the pillow back in.
“Mommy, what are you doing?”
Blair jumped and dropped the pillow as Starr walked into the room and stared wide-eyed at her mother’s flat stomach.
“Mommy? Where’s the baby?”
Blair turned her back on her daughter quickly as she struggled to button up her blouse.
“Starr, where ‘s your Daddy?”
“He dropped me off and went back to work.”
Blair sighed with relief as she turned around to face her daughter who was standing there holding red balloons and looking totally confused.
“Where’s the baby, Mommy?”
“The baby’s still in here, honey, he’s just really small. Some ladies get really big and others don’t. I guess I’m just one of those who won’t get big until the end.”
“Is that why you were putting the pillow in there,” she asked pointing to the pillow.
“Yes. You see, Starr, your daddy is worried that I’m not eating enough, so I wore this pillow so he won’t worry about me. And this has to be our secret until I get fatter, okay, honey?”
Starr still looked confused.
“Okay, Mommy.”
Blair bent down and took her daughter by the arm.
“Starr, you have to promise me you won’t tell your daddy, okay? Promise me.”
“Okay, Mommy, I promise. I’m gonna go play in my room now,” she said, walking away and pulling her balloons through the door.
Blair watched her daughter disappear and closed her eyes, shaking her head. Picking up the pillow she slowly put it back into her pants and looked back at the mirror. This web of deception had just gotten more complicated.
