chapter 16

LLANFAIR, 2:00 A.M.

Ben and Vicki sat up quickly in the darkness as a loud crash shattered the peaceful stillness of the night.

"What the hell..." said Ben as he reached over and turned on the lamp.

They jumped out of bed and noticed the gaping hole in the glass of their window pane and saw a rather large rock, surrounded by shattered glass on the floor. Ben pushed Vicki away from the window and approached it cautiously--his violent past had taught him to be careful! As he approached the window he heard a loud voice calling out from below.

"Oh, V-i-i-c-c-k-k-i-i! Come on down, Sis, I need to talk!"

Ben turned away from the window in disgust.

"It's your psycho brother, Todd. I'm going downstairs to kill him."

Vicki grabbed his arm and stopped him.

"No, Ben, please. Let me go and talk to him. He's been going through a rough time lately."

"His whole life is a rough time. And you tell him he's going to pay for that window," he said getting back into bed, shaking his head and fuming, as Vicki headed downstairs.

As Vicki fastened her blue, silky bathrobe tightly around her, she made her way around the side of the house where Todd had been. Flood lights provided enough illumination but she didn't see him anywhere.

"Todd?"

"Here I am, Vicki, but I'm not really Todd," he said coming out from behind a tree.

Vicki's mouth hung open at the sight of him. He had removed his jacket and tied the sleeves around his neck, cape-style, so that it fell down his back. On his t-shirt he had written SS across his chest in black magic marker and peach roses stuck out from behind his ears and pockets. He carried a half empty bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand which she proceeded to guzzle as Vicki watched--he was gloriously drunk!

"Todd?"

"No, not Todd," he slurred, pointing to the SS on his chest,"I"m Super-Sperm-Man! My sperm is faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to impregnate women in a single bound...I'm SS Man," he shouted as he jumped around attempting to fly, finally tripping and falling on the lawn.

The bottle slipped from his hand and rolled down spilling its contents along the way until it hit the pavement. Todd watched it sadly as he struggled to get up and go after it.
Finally, he sat up.

"Todd, what is the meaning of this! What happened to put you in this drunken state--yet, again!" she said shaking her head in sisterly disapproval.

"I'm seriously considering donating my sperm to the Smithsonian, Vicki. This Lord sperm is amazing stuff!" he continued as if he didn't hear her.

"Todd, it's the middle of the night and I'm not in the mood for your drunken theatrics and certainly not to discuss the viability of your sperm. Now what the heck is wrong with you?"

He looked up at Vicki, his blurry eyes veiled in sadness.

"Tea came to see me tonight."

Vicki gave a loud sigh, rolled her eyes and helped him to his feet. She yanked the roses off of him, chastising him for cutting them, and then untied his jacket and helped him to slip it on.

"Come on, let's go inside, Todd. It's cold out here."

"Oh, goody, cause I could really use another drink," said Todd as they walked to the front door.

When Vicki closed the door, Todd headed for the bar, but she pulled his arm and dragged him down the hallway into her kitchen. As she made some instant coffee in the microwave, Todd sat quietly at her table, brooding. After she added cream and sugar, she handed it to him and watched him take a few swallows.

"Yuck...instant."

"Time constraints, little brother," she said sitting across from him. "Now, I'm going to assume that things did not go well with Tea."

"She told me she loved me," said Todd, taking another swallow of coffee.

"Well, so far that sounds pretty good."

"Yeah, it was really good," he said looking away from her, "for about 5 minutes. Then she told me something else."

Vicki looked confused as Todd removed the picture from his pocket and slid it across the table to her. Vicki picked it up and examined it. A smile came to her face.

"Is this you as a baby?"

"No...that's my baby...mine...and Tea's."

Vicki raised a hand to her gaping mouth, her eyes popping with surprise. She looked back at the photo and than at Todd again--the resemblance was astounding. Suddenly her face broke into a big smile.

"Oh, Todd! How wonderful!"

"Wonderful? My life is a French farce...it's the Goddamned theater of the absurd!" he shouted.

Vicki laughed at his intoxicated dramatics.

"I know this isn't the way you planned it, Todd, but life makes its own plans sometimes. Sweetheart, look on the bright side."

"Okay, Vicki...like, you actually see a bright side here, cause I gotta be honest with you...I don't see one."

Vicki placed her hand on Todd's.

"Todd, the woman you love madly, and who loves you madly in return, gave you a beautiful son! Don't you think that's wonderful?"

Todd shot up, a little unsteadily, and paced around her kitchen.

"She lied to me, Vicki...just like Blair," he yelled.

"No, Todd, not just like Blair. Have you forgotten that you left Tea? And you came back here and took up with Blair again?"

Todd stopped and glared at her furiously.

"Now you sound just like Tea! You women all stick togther, don't you..this big Sisterhood of the Uterus thing, right, to deceive poor suckers like me!"

Vicki rolled her eyes and laughed at him.

"Todd! You must see her point of view. You left her, alone and pregnant--she was probably scared to death."

Todd stood still, becoming pensive and quiet before he finally sat down again.

"I should've been with her, Vicki. I missed everthing, just like with Starr. I'm doomed to never see the birth of my ill-conceived offspring," he said a little sadly.

"Well, there is Blair's child."

Todd rolled his eyes.

"Vicki, I shouldn't say this but I just don't seem to have any feelings for that kid Blair's carrying. I know it's wrong, but its the truth."

"You're probably just projecting your feelings for Blair onto the baby. That will change when its born, after all, Starr is Blair's child and you love her."

"Yeah...I guess...I just wish...nevermind. I'm so stupid...I should have guessed that Tea was pregnant...I mean all we ever did, night and day, was..." he suddenly caught himself and looked over at Vicki, who had a huge smirk on her face, with embarrassment.

Vicki picked up the picture again and smiled at her new nephew.

"When are you going to see him?"

"Tea said I can see him any time. She's giving me joint custody, Vicki."

Vicki looked across the table, nodding her head approvingly.

"That's a wonderfu gift, Todd. She must really trust you."

Todd took back the photo and stared at it. He grinned in spite of himself.

"His name is Thomas Leon. Tea calls him Leo."

"Leo, that's so precious. Oh, Todd, I believe I'm going to cry," she said as she walked to the counter and grabbed a tissue. Dabbing her eyes, she came back and sat down with him. Todd's eyes were transfixed on the photograph.

He finally put the picture back in his pocket and look at Vicki--looking kind of lost. She could tell something else was bothering him.

"I got pretty mad at Tea. I said some pretty nasty stuff to her."

She patted his hand reassuringly.

"Tea's smart. I'm sure she understands how upset you were. You and Tea can work things out."

"She was really pissed," said Todd, a smile coming to his face,"she really let me have it, just like my Delgado use to. You know, Vicki...she's magnificent."

Todd seemed lost in his thoughts of Tea for an instant, then he stood up quickly, swaying a little.

"Vicki, I gotta go!"

Vicki clutched his arm and held him back.

"You, Todd Manning, are not going anywhere in this state, but to bed. I'm not letting you drive in this condition. You will spend the night in one of the guest rooms and that's final."

Todd looked at her with affectionate annoyance, and finally relented. They walked up the back stairs together arm in arm.
