chapter 19:

[More than an hour later...

Tea returns to Todd's cell. She enters and quietly sits beside him on the bench. She waits until the guard moves out of hearing range before she speaks.]

Tea: Where's Viki?

Todd: Where's my pizza and beer?

Tea: It's a little more complicated than I had hoped.

Todd: Gannon changed his mind and wants my kidney, after all?

Tea: Bo got to him. I know he'll make the right decision. It may just take a little longer than I had hoped. But, it will happen. It will.

Todd: You're sounding desperate, Delgado.

Tea: I am desperate.

Todd: You don't have to stick around here. You still have a key to the penthouse, right? Go and do whatever knocked up chicks do this late at night.

Tea: I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing that you're here.

Todd: You have trouble sleeping when you're happy?

Tea: I'm not happy. I'm sad. I hate when you're locked up.

Todd: Try it from this side.

Tea: It might take a few days but I promise I'll continue pursuing this with Hank. He'll come around. You won't be in here much longer.

Todd: It feels like I've been in here forever.

Tea: When you are released, we'll celebrate.

Todd: If this happens, you have to live with me, right?

Tea: Are you sure you want that?

Todd: Are you worried about what your Mr. Sperm will say when he finds out?

Tea: He'll understand.

Todd: Because he's that kind of guy?

Tea: Whatever I want, he wants for me.

Todd: Nothing has changed. You're still knocked up.

Tea: I know. I wasn't suggesting that you were suggesting...

Todd: Good! Because, I wasn't.

Tea: What are you suggesting?

Todd: Nothing. I just wanted to get out of here. You're my ticket out...if you ever come through for me.

Tea: You could have agreed to live with Viki.

Todd: She hates me.

Tea: She loves you. She's just upset about everything that's happened.

Todd: You know all the same stuff that I did and you don't look at me like you hate me, or like I'm a total disappointment. You actually get why I did what I did.

Tea: I wouldn't say that exactly.

Todd: You're turning on me, too?

Tea: Of course not. I'm your lawyer. It doesn't matter if I understand, or agree, with your actions. As my client, you were completely justified in all that you did.

Todd: Guilt doesn't matter to you?

Tea: Absolutely not.

Todd: You really are the perfect lawyer. There should be more like you.

Tea: If there were, you wouldn't need me.

Todd: I could find other lawyers who would do whatever I pay them to do.

Tea: But, you want me. Why?

Todd: Do I have a choice? You showed up without clearing it with me first. I tried to fire you and you're still here. I guess I'm just stuck with you being my lawyer.

Tea: But, my being your roommate again was your idea, not mine. Why do you want to live together again?

Todd: I already told you.

Tea: I don't believe it has anything to do with Viki. I think you want to live with me again. I'm curious what your motives are.

Todd: I won't hurt you, Delgado.

Tea: I know that. I also know that you have a reason for everything you do. I'll find out the reason somehow.

[Tea notices that the bandage on his hand is unraveling. She instinctively reaches for his hand to fix it. He instinctively pulls his hand away at the surprise feeling of her touch.]

Tea: Let me fix it.

Todd: I kicked Viki out when she wouldn't leave me alone about it, do you want the same response?

Tea: You never have been good at allowing others to take care of you.

[Todd stands up and begins pacing.]

Todd: I haven't had much practice.

Tea: You have an opportunity to practice right now.

Todd: Forget it! It's just a little scratch, anyway.

Tea: Viki must have thought it was serious enough to need all that bandaging.

Todd: She over-reacts.

Tea: Let me see it. If it really is minor, I'll back off.

[Todd doesn't respond as he continues to pace.]

Tea: Do you recall that time so long ago when we sat in this very cell and I bandaged your hand after you punched the wall?

Todd: I was trying to bust out.

Tea: You were angry at Blair because she was holding your alibi for ransom until you gave her custody of Starr.

Todd: Now, she won't need me to sign over custody. I'm going to prison. She'll get both my kids.

Tea: We won't allow that to happen. We fought together in the past for custody of Starr and we won. We'll be able to do that again this time, for both your children.

Todd: I thought you didn't think the baby is mine?

Tea: I have my doubts, but if you believe him to be your son, and if you love him with all your heart, then he is your son.

Todd: He deserves better. Starr deserves better. Everyone deserves better. At least you got out and got something better.

Tea: This isn't the time to discuss this. We'll get you out of here and then we'll talk about whatever we need to talk about.

Todd: I'm never getting out of here. You should face that and go back to your own life.

Tea: This is my life. You are a part of my life...a very important part.

Todd: All I ever did was screw everything up for you.

Tea: That's not true.

Todd: You brought up that time you took care of my hand. Do you remember what I did to you that time? Do you?

Tea: You were scared.

Todd: I let you think that I wanted you to stick around and be more than my lawyer. I waited until you really thought that I gave a damn about you and then I ripped it all away from you by trying to pay you off.

Tea: I understood why you did that.

Todd: You split.

Tea: I didn't stop being your lawyer.

Todd: You stopped being my wife.

Tea: But, how long did that last? Soon after that, you had me living at the penthouse again.

Todd: I blew that, too.

Tea: Clearly, you didn't. I agreed to marry you again.

Todd: But, I blew it a bunch of times in between and then I really started blowing everything after that.

Tea: Somehow we managed some happiness.

Todd: It wasn't because of me.

Tea: I know that my happiness was because of you. Just being near you made me happy.

Todd: I was always pushing you away.

Tea: Except for the times that you were pulling me close.

Todd: Why do you keep forgetting the lousy stuff?

Tea: I haven't forgotten any of it, including the happy times we had together. At least, they were happy for me. Were they happy for you?

[Todd doesn't answer her question. Instead, he sits down next to her on the bench again and offers his hand to her. Gently, she takes his hand in hers and slowly unravels the bandages to look at his injured hand.]

chapter 20:

[Later that night...

Tea is asleep in the master bedroom of Todd's penthouse when she suddenly awakens, startled to find her ex-husband sitting on the edge of the bed.]

Todd: Don't freak. It's me. But, I guess for most chicks that would be reason to freak, huh?

[Tea sits up as concern instantly takes over for the fear she felt seconds earlier.]

Tea: What are you doing here?

Todd: This is my bed. What are you doing here?

Tea: If they find you, they'll bring additional charges against you. You shouldn't have come back here.

Todd: You think I should have split the country, instead?

Tea: If you don't want to be caught...yes.

Todd: So, now you want me to split the country?

Tea: Of course not. I was more than capable of getting the charges against you dropped. But, since you've clearly found a way to escape, you need to leave before they come looking for you.

Todd: I just came to say good-bye.

Tea: Good-bye! Now, go!

Todd: You don't want to come with me?

Tea: I'm confused.

Todd: Maybe you're dreaming. That's probably it. This is probably all just some really weird dream you're having.

Tea: Which parts?

Todd: I don't know. You're the one who's dreaming. The part with you waking up and find me hovering over you while you're sleeping naked on my bed has to be a first for one of your dreams, right?

Tea: Not quite.

Todd: I guess you could have had that as a nightmare.

Tea: Wait a minute! I'm not naked.

Todd: Maybe you secretly want to be and that's why you just dreamed that I said that.

Tea: I'm awake and you're really here, Todd.

Todd: No, you're sleeping. I can prove it.

Tea: How?

Todd: If this were real, I would never do this...

[Todd leans closer to her and places his hand lightly on her cheek. As his lips near hers, he hesitates for a moment. He definitely wants to kiss her, but he's concerned about the difficulty he knows he'll have in satisfying himself with just one kiss.

Tea reaches her hand toward him and caresses his cheek before moving her fingers into his hair and placing pressure on the back of his head to move closer to where her lips awaits his.

Their kiss isn't the tender peck that Todd intended, as Tea kisses him openly and with great passion and intensity. Todd goes along without protest, until her free hand begins it's search up the inside of his leg.

Todd quickly ends their kiss and moves slightly away from her, but remains seated on the edge of the bed.]

Todd: What the hell are you doing?

Tea: If this is my dream, I can do anything of my choosing. I choose you. Now, come back over here.

Todd: Maybe it's not that kind of dream.

Tea: What kind is it?

Todd: I don't know.

Tea: Show me.

Todd: Show you what? My ankle monitor?

Tea: You were released?

Todd: Did you really think I'd escape?

Tea: If you had the chance...absolutely.

Todd: I never got the chance. Gannon showed up and ruined all my plans.

Tea: Why didn't you call me? I should have been there. You shouldn't have spoken to him without your attorney.

Todd: I didn't need a shyster.

Tea: You always need an attorney. You should know that by now.

Todd: Gannon didn't want to wake you.

Tea: That was very thoughtful, for you to let me sleep, but I should have been there.

Todd: It was Gannon.

Tea: I know Hank. I know that he wouldn't speak to you without your attorney, unless you told him that you didn't want me there.

Todd: It was no big deal. I didn't need a lawyer. Gannon was just worried about getting sued and pulled some strings to get me out tonight.

Tea: He must have been feeling quite guilty, if he couldn't wait until morning. I could have used that to our advantage.

Todd: He released me. He didn't let me off the hook.

Tea: Maybe he would have, if I had been there.

Todd: You're not that good, Delgado.

Tea: I'm the best you've ever had.

[Todd looks away, uncomfortable with the thoughts floating through his mind, and the memories, too.]

Tea: I meant, the best lawyer.

Todd: I knew that.

Tea: Have you ever had better?

[Todd looks at her again, almost certain that she is now definitely referring to sex.]

Todd: Have you?

Tea: Have I ever had an attorney better than myself?

Todd: That's not what you were asking me.

Tea: You didn't answer.

Todd: Neither did you.

Tea: It's late. You must be exhausted. Lie down.

Todd: Are you going to your room now?

Tea: I'm in my room.

Todd: I know it's been a while since you lived here but this is my room.

Tea: We could share.

chapter 21:

Todd: You think that, just because you're knocked up, you get to have the best room in the place?

Tea: I offered to share.

Todd: What if your whatever shows up? You don't want Semen to find you in my bed, do you?

Tea: His name is Simon.

Todd: Whatever. That's a stupid name, anyway. Geeks are named Simon.

Tea: Well, this Simon is no geek.

Todd: If he looks like a geek, talks like a geek, and is named Simon...

Tea: I'm not surprised that you've seen pictures of him, since I know you checked up on him, but how did you manage to hear his voice?

Todd: I never said that I did.

Tea: I guess not. If you had ever spoken to him, you would know that he most certainly does not talk like a geek.

Todd: What do you see in that geek?

Tea: He is not a geek. He's kind, caring, sensitive, non-judgmental, affectionate, understanding...

Todd: In other words...a geek.

Tea: Fine, Todd! Believe he's a geek, if that makes you feel better.

Todd: Why the hell would I care that he's a geek? I'm not the one who has to suffer living with Semen the Geek.

Tea: His name is Simon.

Todd: That's what I said.

Tea: You're so juvenile sometimes.

Todd: Thank you!

Tea: That wasn't a compliment.

Todd: Whatever!

Tea: Do you really want to know why I'm with him?

Todd: What I really want is for you to get your butt out of my bed.

Tea: I'm comfortable.

Todd: So?

Tea: We've shared a bed before.

Todd: That was before you got yourself knocked up.

Tea: Actually, the last time we shared a bed...this bed...

Todd (angrily): Don't remind me.

Tea: That night is a special memory for me.

Todd: It's a faded memory for me. I barely remember any of it anymore.

Tea: Because you were drunk?

Todd: I had to be drunk to...

Tea: To make love to me? To touch me? To tell me that you love me?

Todd: I never said that.

Tea: I wasn't drunk that night. I have a very vivid recollection of everything that we did together, of everything that was said.

Todd: All I remember is you waiting until after you seduced me...twice, before you dropped the bomb about you being knocked up by your semen donor.

Tea: His name is Simon! Simon Donner!

Todd: I was referring to his importance in your life, not to his name. That name does fit, though...Semen Donor.

Tea: Simon Donner! Simon Donner! Simon Donner!

Todd: You really like saying his name.

Tea: I'm tired of you twisting his name to suit your juvenile purposes, not to mention your assumption that he's nothing more to me than the man who got me pregnant.

Todd: If he was the love of your life, you'd be looking all sexy in his bed, not mine.

Tea: You think I look sexy?

Todd (lying): Not really. But, your Semen Donor might if you were in his bed. Why are you in mine instead?

Tea (raising her voice): His name is Simon Donner!

Todd: You don't have to yell.

Tea: You frustrate me so much sometimes.

Todd: But, your geek doesn't, right? He always says the right thing, at the right time. He never annoys you. He never ticks you off. He also doesn't excite you. He doesn't surprise you. He's a total bore.

Tea: He loves me.

Todd: Then, he's not just a geek, he's also a fool.

Tea: You don't get it, do you?

Todd: Get what?

Tea: He's me.

Todd: You made him up? Did you make up being knocked up, too?

Tea: You know he's real. You checked him out, remember?

Todd: You're smart. You could have faked a guy.

Tea: He's not fake. He's very real. What I meant was that in our relationship...his and mine, he's me and I'm you.

Todd: What are you talking about?

Tea: He loves me. He knows that I'll never be able to fully give him my heart, but he wants to be with me anyway. He offers me all his love, even though he knows that I'll never be able to truly return that love. He could walk away...he should walk away. He knows that. But, he stays. He hopes for what he knows he'll never have...my heart.

[Tea wipes at the streams of tears that are beginning to flow down her cheeks.]

Todd: Why are you crying? You care that much about him?

Tea: I understand now, better than I could before.

Todd: You understand? What do you understand?

Tea: Why you like having me around. I didn't understand before why you would work so hard to get me back after you worked just as hard to push me away. I thought it was just a game you were playing with me.

Todd: It was a game. I always won.

Tea: You did, because I always come back. I'm always there when you need me. I'll hold you when you're scared. I'll take care of you when you're hurting. I'll listen when you need to talk. I'll understand what no one else seems to understand. I'll even understand why you don't...why you can't...love me. I'll be there when you want someone to feel close to, but I'll understand when pretend isn't enough for you anymore and you leave to find something real. And then, I'll be there again when you come back because that real thing was too much...too powerful...too painful. I'll be your safety net. I'll be your best friend. I'll be the one person you can trust to always be there when you need me. Even though I know it may destroy me, I will be whatever you need me to be, when you need me to be it, until it truly does destroy me. And, even then, I will still do everything I can to hold myself together enough to be there when you need me again. I love you. It's not sane. It's not safe. It's not smart. It doesn't matter. I love you.

[Tea lowers her head as her tears increase. Todd watches her, uncertain how to respond.]

to be continued...
