CHAPTER 51 |
PREVIOUSLY:
Todd: So, I should be back here in two hours?
Del: Yes.
[Todd again turns and walks away from Del.]
Del: Thank you.
[Without looking back at Del, or slowing down his escape, Todd responds.]
Todd: I'm not doing it for you.

chapter 51:
[Almost two hours later...
Del watches Tea look at the clock for what he assumes must be at least the twentieth time in the last hour.]
Del: He'll be here.
Tea: Since when do you have such faith in Todd?
Del: Since I've seen how much he cares about you. He may be a creep, but he's a creep who loves you. I love you, too. I want you to be happy, even if it means I have to have Todd Manning as a brother-in-law.
Tea: We may, or may not, still be married.
Del: You should find out for certain which it is.
Tea: Todd doesn't seem interested in giving me a straight answer.
Del: There's one way to know for sure.
Tea: You're suggesting that I marry Todd again?
Del: It's what you want.
Tea: We actually seemed to do better when we weren't married, although, maybe we were married when we left Llanview together and I just didn't know it.
Del: So, things were good when you ran off together?
Tea: We did not run off.
Del: Carlotta told me that Todd secretly slithered into town, possibly committed some illegal acts, and that you disappeared in the middle of the night with him, not letting anyone know that you were leaving.
Tea: We quietly slipped away together. That's different from running away.
Del: From what I understand, the Llanview police had some questions for him when you slipped away.
Tea: This is irrelevant. Todd returned to living in Llanview and is not in any legal trouble.
Del: That you know about.
Tea: Do you know something?
Del: Relax. There are no warrants out for his arrest.
Tea: You checked?
Del: I do what I have to when it comes to my baby sister's well being.
[Tea again looks at the clock.]
Del: He has a few more minutes.
Tea: What?
Del: I told your bastard to be back in two hours. He has a few more minutes.
Tea: You're sure he didn't say where he was going?
Del: Are you worried?
Tea: I'm curious.
Del: He's probably looking for a place to live.
Tea: Maybe.
Del: After you left Llanview together, why did things fall apart?
Tea: It's not important now.
Del: We have a few minutes until your bastard returns. I'm curious. Tell me.
Tea: You already know. We had a disagreement.
Del: And, Todd walked out on you?
Tea: Yes.
Del: And, didn't bother coming back?
Tea: Why are you so curious about this now?
Del: If your bastard would hurry up and get here, I could reveal the truth to both of you about what happened that day.
Todd: What day?
[Tea looks toward the door and smiles at the sight of Todd. Todd can't control himself and smiles slightly, in response. Del also can't control a slight smile, amazed at the sight of Todd Manning visibly melting because of Tea, as much as he'll allow in front of Del, anyway.]
Todd (to Del): You can go away now.
Del: Don't you want to know that you didn't walk out on Tea the last time you were together?
Todd: I already know that.
Tea: Well, I don't.
Todd: You're the one who left me. You can stop pretending that you didn't. Even your brother is on my side on this one, and he hates my guts.
Tea: I did not leave you.
Del: She's right. She didn't.
Todd: What kind of game are you playing? Are you trying to get us to fight so you can get your kicks before you leave?
Del: I'm trying to straighten out a misunderstanding.
Todd: There's no misunderstanding. Tea ditched me. End of story.
Tea: That's not the end of my story.
Del: It's not the end of the true story, either.
Todd: How would you know? You weren't there.
Del: No, but I have spoken to both of you about it. I've pieced together enough to have a good idea what happened.
Todd: And, what the hell do you think happened? I'm in a bad mood, so if you try to tell me I'm the one who ended it, you'll be limping onto that plane.
[Todd regrets his words when he notices a painful expression appear on Tea's face for a moment.]
Todd: Never mind. It doesn't matter. I ditched Tea. Whatever. I don't care anymore. Let's just forget about this ancient history.
Del: You don't want the truth?
Todd: Not your version of it. I'll be the bad guy. You'll blame it all on me.
Del: Actually, neither of you is to blame, not entirely. Because, neither of you left the other.
Todd: So, we've been together this whole time, but neither of us knew about it?
Del: You did leave Tea. And, Tea did leave you. But, neither of you was the one who ended your relationship.
Todd (to Tea): Did he swipe the pain pills you wouldn't take?
Del (concerned): You didn't take your pain pills.
Tea: I didn't need to. I'm fine.
Todd: She hurts like hell but she won't admit it.
Del (to Tea): If you need painkillers, you should take them.
Tea: I don't need them.
Todd: Yes, you do.
Tea: The biggest pain right now is from both of you giving me a headache about this. It's my body. I know when I need painkillers. That's not right now.
[Del speaks to Tea in Spanish.]
Todd: Did he just insult you?
Tea: He told me I'm being stubborn.
Todd: You're sure that's all? Because if he used profanity, or anything, I'm willing to kick his butt for you.
Del: You couldn't kick the butt of a goldfish.
Tea: Boys! Del, just continue what you were saying.
Del: I'm not so sure that this guy deserves to know the truth. But, you certainly do. The truth is that Todd thinks you left him.
Tea (to Todd): We both know that's not true.
Todd: We both know it is.
Tea: I know for a fact that I did not leave you.
Todd: I know for a fact that you did.
Del: I have to leave soon so, if you want to know the truth, I should hurry up and explain this.
Tea: We're both listening.
Todd: This better not be a setup.
to be continued...
