CHAPTER

49

PREVIOUSLY:
[Tea gives up trying to hold back her tears. She releases tears that are not only filled with pain from the events leading up to, and following, the plane crash, but also tears of relief that Todd came to her and intends to stay with her, despite how difficult she's made it for him.

Todd holds her as she cries and continues to hold her long after she's exhausted herself into sleep.]

chapter 49:

[The next morning...

Todd's eyes are closed, but he's wide awake. He's enjoying, as he has been all night, the feeling of Tea sleeping in his arms again.

Normally, lying awake for so many hours, without sleep arriving, would be overwhelmingly frustrating for Todd and he would be out of bed, pacing around the room, or on the road, driving nowhere in particular, needing to be anywhere but where his nightmares threaten him.

Todd isn't moving, though. Tea's asleep and he doesn't want to wake her until he absolutely has to. It also isn't his own nightmares that are causing him the most concern right now.

Tea has been silent for hours, but he fears what her mind might be putting her through while she sleeps. He knows that, even if the nightmares that have been plaguing her recently haven't haunted her sleep this time, she'll still awake to a nightmare. In the past, he feels certain that, at times, her waking hours were her worst nightmare, because of him. This time, when she awakes to a living nightmare, he knows that it won't be his presence that will be the cause.

His hold on her tightens as he thinks about the pain she'll awaken to when she's instantly reminded that she was in a plane crash, people she cared about died, she's partially paralyzed, and she's so depressed that she'll wish she could go back to sleep and never wake up again.

There's a light tapping on the door. Todd ignores it. Del slowly opens the door and softly calls out his sister's name, uncertain if she's awake.

As he enters the room and finds Tea lying in bed, in the arms of a shirtless Todd, he quickly turns his head away and mutters in Spanish.

Todd opens his eyes and smiles at the intruder.]

Todd: My buff bod is blinding, isn't it? Tea has to wear shades whenever we do it.

Del: You are a pig, Manning.

Todd: I'm an exhausted pig. Luckily your sister loves pig, and has a huge appetite.

Del: I didn't come here to listen to your filthy comments.

Todd: You can leave.

Del: Tea wants me here. If you keep at it, she'll wake up and she won't be too happy with you.

Todd: She's too hot for me to stay ticked for long, obviously.

Del: You probably climbed into bed with her after she fell asleep.

Todd: She grabbed me and pulled me in. You can see that she ripped all my clothes off.

Del: You're sick.

Todd: Whatever. At least I'm getting some. You must be frustrated since your boyfriend didn't make the trip down here with you.

Del: I could show you a picture of my outrageously sexy girlfriend but I have no reason to prove myself to you.

Todd: Some of those chicks whose pictures you get when you buy a new wallet are pretty hot. I wouldn't mind getting a look at whatever imaginary girlfriend you have in your wallet.

Del: Do you carry pictures of Tea in your wallet?

Todd: Absolutely. I had to develop them myself, though, since I didn't want those kinds of pictures to end up in the wrong hands, if you know what I mean.

Del: I arrest people like you on a regular basis.

Todd: I still remember that time you falsely incarcerated me for no good reason.

Del: You broke down my door like a Neanderthal. Seconds after being released for that, you were stupid enough to assault me in the police station. You're not a very bright man.

Todd: The size of my IQ is only surpassed by the size of my...

Tea: Don't you dare!

Todd: You're awake?

Tea: The sound of two little boys engaging in a pissing contest woke me.

Todd: I would win that contest. After all, mine is bigger than his.

Tea: Stop talking. Right now!

Todd: It's not okay to talk about the size of our bladders? Since when?

Tea: I know what you were really referring to. I know why. Stop now before I lose my temper.

Todd: Yeah, Del. Really! You know she's depressed and now she has to wake up to you being so crude.

Del: You're the one who's crude, rude and lewd.

Todd: I am quite a dude.

Tea: I can't put up with this so early. I haven't had any coffee yet.

Del: I brought coffee. I also brought extra food so a certain bastard won't steal your breakfast.

Todd: I'm proud of you, bro. The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Del: My problem is you.

[Del speaks to Tea in Spanish for a few moments and then leaves the room.]

Todd: What did he call me?

Tea: You don't want to know.

Todd: Sure, I do. I need to know so I can come up with something better to call him.

Tea: I thought we agreed last night to stop the games.

Todd: I don't remember agreeing to be nice to anyone who hates my guts and is trying to convince you to ditch me.

Tea: He's not fond of you, for obvious reasons...

Todd: Jealousy?

Tea: ...but he is willing to try to be civil to you, for my sake. It would be nice if you could do the same.

Todd: You want me to be civil to myself?

Tea: From now on there's a new rule -- you don't speak until I've had coffee.

Todd: There was a time you preferred waking up to a great big dose of Todd.

Tea: There was a time you didn't try so hard to make me angry.

Todd: I'm just trying to motivate you.

Tea: Is that what you're doing?

Todd: You need to get fired up.

Tea: Right now, I just need to get up. You need to help me.

Todd: Are you okay?

Tea: I'm just a little stiff. It'll get better after I sit up.

[Todd begins to disentangle their bodies.]

Tea: Wait! Stop!

Todd: What's wrong?

Tea: A muscle spasm.

Todd: Where?

Tea: My back.

Todd: Do you need me to massage it?

Tea: No. Just give it a minute. It'll stop.

Todd: Is this because of how you were sleeping?

Tea: It's okay for me to sleep against you.

Todd: Not if you're going to wake up in agony.

Tea: It wouldn't matter how I was positioned.

Todd: You're in a lot of pain, aren't you?

Tea: It'll pass.

Todd: I'm not just talking about this. You've been in pain this whole time, haven't you?

Tea: I can handle it.

Todd: They should give you more drugs.

Tea: I'm fine. My back is better now. You can move me again, just go slow.

[Slowly...very slowly, Todd begins to move Tea's body again.]

to be continued...
