CHAPTER 46 |
PREVIOUSLY: [Tea and Del say their good-byes and Del leaves Tea's room, leaving her with the question of whether she's unknowingly been married to Todd all this time.]

chapter 46:
[Tea is lying in bed, uninterested in sleep. Her mind is too busy contemplating the possibility that her brother could be right, that Todd may have arranged to stop her from ending their most recent marriage, while allowing her to believe that it had ended.
The more time she spends lying in bed thinking about her ex-husband...husband, whichever it may be, playing games with her life, the angrier she becomes.
How dare he try to control her life! Even if it's not true, how dare he convince her brother that it is true! How dare he discuss their sex life with her brother! How dare he disrespect her privacy so blatantly, just so he can enjoy angering her brother! How dare he walk out on her after she gave up everything to run off with him the last time they were in Llanview together! How dare he!
Minutes later...
Tea exits the rehabilitation center and quickly makes her way to the parking area. She immediately spots his van and storms toward it.
Todd is lounging inside, waiting for the hour to become late enough for him to be certain that Tea's brother has left for the night, so he can return to her room himself, which he's certain she wants him to. He's startled by the sound of pounding against the side door of the van.
He moves toward the passenger door and looks out the window. He immediately smiles widely at the sight of the woman he loves.
He moves back into the van and grabs his suitcase. He quickly opens the passenger door and steps out.]
Todd: You couldn't wait, huh? You had to come get me as soon as you got rid of your loser brother?
[Tea quickly moves toward him with her wheelchair. He jumps out of the way, to avoid injury.]
Todd: If you want a hug, just say so.
Tea: A hug? Why would I ever hug you again?
Todd: You sound ticked. What did your brother do this time?
Tea: He told me the truth.
Todd: I get it. He was lying about me again, and you believed him. I'm deeply hurt. I'm willing to forgive you, though. Let's go to bed.
Tea: Are we still married?
Todd: Is that what this is about? It can't be, because that would make you ecstatically happy, and that's not how you're acting right now.
Tea: Happy? You're even crazier than I thought.
Todd: It would be a dream come true for you.
Tea: So, you thought you'd lie to me for years, cheat on me, and I'd be so thrilled that you've been playing games, and trying to control my life, that I would thank you and rush into your arms when I found out?
Todd: Well, yeah. That's what happened. You did just try to rush into my arms.
Tea: I tried to run you over, you jerk!
Todd: Why are you angry at me? You should be angry at your brother for upsetting you this much.
Tea: I'm calling Llanview tomorrow. Blair should know what you did to her, and Max, too. It is Max that she's unknowingly married to, isn't it?
Todd: Yeah. So? What's the big deal?
[Tea again tries to hit Todd with her wheelchair. He moves out of her way and onto an elevated area where Tea's path is blocked by some slight curbing.]
Tea: Play fair! Get down here so I can hurt you.
Todd: No way. If you want me, you'll have to do one of those wheelie things you're learning how to do and come get me.
Tea: I wouldn't give you the satisfaction. If I tip over and injure myself, you'll use your legal status as my estranged husband to declare yourself in charge of my care.
Todd: You think I want you to hurt yourself just so I can be in charge of you? Why would I do that? You don't have any money.
Tea: It's me you want to control, not my financial assets.
Todd: You're right. It's your ass that I'm interested in, not your other assets. And, I don't want you to fall on it. You'll feel bad enough in a few minutes when you settle down and realize that you came after me with a dangerous vehicle.
Tea: What I'm going to do is divorce you, as soon as possible.
Todd: You'll have to get into my van with me first.
Tea: Why?
Todd: So we can get married. You can't divorce me until you marry me again.
[Tea takes a few deep breaths and calms herself down. Todd moves back toward her, certain that she won't try to run him over again.]
Tea: Tell me the truth, are we married or not?
Todd: Yes.
Tea: I'm serious.
Todd: So am I. We'll go and get married right now.
Tea: That would be a mistake.
Todd: That's what you want, isn't it?
Tea: To make a mistake?
Todd: You've made plenty of mistakes. A few of your biggest mistakes are still living in Llanview. One of them even tried to kill me.
Tea: Who tried to kill you? John Sykes?
Todd: No, but he is shacking up with my shrink so he's probably getting her to spill all my secrets to him while they're doing the naked, sweaty bump and grind. Whoa! I just had a visual of that. I think I'm going to be sick.
Tea: Wait! John Sykes is dating your shrink?
Todd: Yeah. Don't worry, everything I've told her has been a lie, except for the part about you ditching me.
Tea: You ditched me.
Todd: I'm willing to be understanding about it, but not if you start lying.
Tea: Me? Lying?
Todd: You've been telling your brother stories about me that aren't true.
Tea: You're the one who has been spinning false tales to my brother, and it has to stop.
Todd: Why? We're all having fun.
Tea: You are. The rest of us aren't. For the moment, let's focus on everything else that's been revealed so far tonight. Will you give me a straight answer about our marital status?
Todd: We could go for a drive. We could hang out on a beach until the sun comes up again.
Tea: That's not for many hours.
Todd: There's plenty of room in the van. We could lay down in the back together and fool around until it's time.
Tea: I need to be here when Del returns in the morning. He's leaving tomorrow, remember?
Todd: He's been telling you lies about me, maybe he lied about leaving, too.
Tea: Don't lie to me now.
Todd: Pay attention. Del's the one who lies.
Tea: You exhaust me.
Todd: Good! Let's got to bed.
Tea: I'm only letting you come to my room because I want some answers and I need to lie down. You're not spending the night in my room.
Todd: Whatever you say.
[Todd picks up his suitcase and begins walking toward the building. Tea follows him...a smile on her face.]
