REACHING OUT

BY TIMA

CHAPTER

39

PREVIOUSLY: Todd: That mouth of hers. Oh, yeah! Oh, baby, yeah!

[Later that afternoon...

Tea is alone in her room, emotionally exhausted from her earlier session with the staff psychiatrist. Her phone rings. She ignores it the first couple of rings before finally answering it.]

Tea: Hello?

Todd (from a local jail): Come bail us out.

chapter 38:

Tea: Todd?

Todd: Yeah, it's me. Now, get your butt down here and do that lawyer thing you do so I can get out of this place.

Tea: You were arrested?

Todd: You're coming, right?

Tea: Why were you arrested?

Todd: You'll find out when you get here.

Tea: Where's Del?

Todd: We're spending the day together, like you wanted.

Tea: He was arrested, too?

Todd: Who cares? The important thing is that I was arrested. Stop the chit-chat and get down here.

Tea: I care. He's my brother. If you did anything that hurts his career...

Todd: Me? Why do you assume it was me? Just because he's a federal agent doesn't mean that he can't be the one who starts a fight.

Tea: You got into a fight? It must have been a serious one if the police became involved.

Todd: It wasn't as big a deal as they're making it out to be. Or, as bad as Del will try to tell you it was.

Tea: What did you do?

Todd: There you go, assuming the worst of me. I feel like I'm back in Llanview. All I need now is a police commissioner who gets off on locking me up for stuff he knows I didn't do and it would really feel like home here.

Tea: Maybe I can call someone to work on your cases.

Todd: We don't need anyone else working on anything. Just come down here and explain things, the way that only you can explain things. I'll pay for whatever got busted up. You'll talk them out of pressing charges. Everything will be fine. You'll see.

Tea: I'm in no shape to take this on right now.

Todd: That plane crash didn't take away your ability to be a lawyer, did it?

Tea: You should have someone who can focus completely on your needs.

Todd: Which is you. Stop trying to teach me a lesson by making me think you won't come. We both know that you will.

Tea: After I find out what you did, it may only be my brother that I'll be defending.

Todd: You'll take one look at my face and you'll forgive me completely, especially when you see the blood.

Tea: Blood? Did you provoke him into hitting you again?

Todd: He has a hair trigger and it's my fault?

Tea: Put one of the officers on the phone. Maybe I can handle this from here.

Todd: I don't think they allow that around here. I think you need to come yourself.

Tea: Whatever you did must be really horrible if you think that I'll only forgive you if I see how badly my brother reacted towards you for whatever you did.

Todd: He misunderstood.

Tea: Put one of the officers on and I'll judge for myself. Either that, or put Del on and I'll ask him what happened.

Todd: Fine. You can talk to one of the cops. Just remember that I'm bleeding.

Tea: Is Del injured, too?

[Todd hands the phone to an officer, rather than answer Tea's question. Tea immediately assumes that, this time, Todd must have gotten in some punches of his own against her brother.

For several minutes Tea speaks to an officer, in Spanish, as she determines what occurred.

She learns that there was a minor traffic accident with no injuries, but when officers arrived, moments later, they found Del and Todd verbally, and physically, fighting with each other. Both refused to stop fighting and were taken into custody.

The officer states that they'd be willing to release both men as long as the damage they caused is paid for, but they're concerned that the two men will immediately resume their fight.

Tea asks if the officer knows what the fight was about. She's informed that neither man would reveal any details, but they did discern from the yelling they've observed that it has something to do with the sister of one of the men. She's also told that the men have had to be kept in separate areas of the police station, because even visual contact turns into a shouting match between them.

Tea tells the officer that she'll be there as soon as she can, and that she'll ensure that the men will no longer brawl in public. When she mentions that she's in a wheelchair, and it may take a while for her to arrange transportation, the officer offers to have someone pick her up. She agrees.

An hour later...

Tea arrives at the police station. Her anger hasn't subsided yet. She hasn't allowed it to. She wants the full force of her wrath to be felt, although she doubts she'll be able to stay mad at either Del, or Todd, for long.

She sees Todd first, as he sits in the main room of the police station. Her heart melts a little at the sight of the damage her brother did to his face. She quickly forces herself to ignore her instinct to rush to him and care for his wounds.]

Todd: Delgado! Finally! Get me out of here.

Tea: I haven't heard what the fight was about yet. After I do, I'll decide whose case I'll be handling.

Todd: There's no case here. It's just a couple of guys kidding around. It's no big deal.

Tea: It must have been a big deal for Del to do that to your face.

Todd: You should see the rest of my body. You should really see...

Tea (interrupting): If you're thinking of saying anything even remotely inappropriate, now is definitely not the time.

Todd: So, you're gonna go along with your brother and demand they toss me in prison for the rest of my life?

Tea: What did you do, Todd?

Todd: Nothing.

Tea: It would be better for you if I heard it from you, instead of from my brother.

Todd: Go ahead and ask him. He'll tell you it was nothing.

Tea: I doubt that.

Todd: Well, he might make up some lies.

Tea: Obviously, you won't tell me what I need to know.

Todd: What you need to know is that I can't be there for you, the way you need me to be, if I'm locked up in here. You need to get me out so I can find us a place to live.

Tea: We're not living together. After I speak to my brother, there's a good chance you won't even be visiting me anymore.

Todd: You can't keep me out. That one guard likes me.

Tea: I'm not so sure that I like you right now.

Todd: Did it ever occur to you that maybe Del started this?

Tea: Did he?

Todd: Get me out of here and I'll explain it to you.

[Tea speaks briefly to an officer, in Spanish, asking to see her brother. She turns from Todd, without speaking to him, and follows the officer to a small room.

Minutes later, Tea hears the loud voices of Del and Todd, as they briefly share the same room, while Del is being led toward the room Tea is in. She had hoped that they would find a way to get along, for her sake, but is quickly losing hope of that ever happening. Even though she still doesn't know the details of what happened, their yelling at each other now, convinces her that it must have been something severe and not easily forgivable.]

to be continued...
