CHAPTER 29 |
PREVIOUSLY:
Todd: I knew you'd agree.
Tea: I haven't agreed. I'm only considering it.
Todd: I knew you'd agree.
[Tea smiles as she shakes her head. His determination frustrates her but it also makes her feel good, knowing that he doesn't intend to back down on what he wants and what he wants seems to be time with her.]

chapter 29:
[Later that evening...back on the Puerto Rican mainland...
Tea has tried to convince Todd to change his mind about dining in a restaurant, but has been unsuccessful, especially with Del encouraging him. She knows that Del just wants her to get out, instead of isolating herself in her room at the rehabilitation center, but it does unnerve her that Del and Todd seem to be on the same side right now, even though they still clearly don't like each other.
Tea finally states that she will go to dinner with them, but only if Todd and Del go shopping for her so she'll have something appropriate to wear. She assumes that by placing this stipulation on her agreement, she ultimately won't have to go, since she knows that both her brother, and her ex-husband, hate shopping, and will be especially resistant to shopping for women's clothing.
As Todd and Del finally return to her room after their joint shopping trip, carrying numerous bags filled with their purchases, she realizes that her plan failed and she will be dining out this evening, unless she can come up with an acceptable excuse.]
Todd: Get out Del. I need to dress Tea.
Tea: No, you don't.
Todd: We don't have much time. Because of this idiot, it took longer than it should have.
Del: He's just upset that I know your style better than he does.
Todd: I lived with her, remember? I know how she dresses.
Del: I've lived with her, too. And, I've known her longer than you have.
Todd: You lived with her when she was six. Her taste has changed since then. Unless, she was into wearing chick business suits with short skirts when she was a kid.
Tea: What exactly did you get me? Because, if I don't approve, I don't go.
[Todd and Del dump the contents of their bags onto Tea's bed. As they step away, Tea approaches the bed in her wheelchair and looks through the items. To her dismay, she finds several outfits that she actually likes. She realizes that she could lie and pretend that she doesn't like anything that they brought so she can have her way and they would have to dine in her room, instead of in a crowded restaurant. The fact that they both put themselves through the ordeal of buying clothing for her, convinces her that she has to dine out with them, like they both want, despite her own misgivings.]
Todd: Tell Del to get out of here so I can dress you.
Tea: I'll dress myself, as much as I can. If there's anything I can't manage on my own, I'll have a staff member help me.
Todd: Don't be so stubborn.
Del: He's right.
Tea: You want him to dress me?
Del: No. But, you are being stubborn.
Tea: I'm agreeing to go out with both of you. I should be allowed to choose who helps me get ready.
Todd: Fine. Choose me so we can hurry up and get out of here.
Del: I'll wait outside. If he tries anything, just scream.
[Del leaves the room and closes the door.]
Todd: Are you scared I'll hurt you, too?
Tea: That's not why I don't want you to help me.
Todd: What's the big deal, Tea? I've seen you plenty of times.
Tea: But, those were times when I chose for you to see me. This is different.
Todd: I won't force you, Tea. If I see you this time, it will be because you're okay with it.
Tea: I'm not okay with it.
Todd: I'll wait outside.
[Todd gives her an exaggerated sad expression and starts slowly walking toward the door.]
Tea: Todd...
[Todd turns around and quickly approaches her again.]
Todd: Which part of you do I get to see first?
Tea: I didn't say that you'd get to see anything.
Todd: Would it help if I took all my clothes off first?
Tea: Okay.
Todd: I was kidding.
Tea: I really don't know if this is a good idea.
Todd: I promise I won't get turned on by anything I see. Okay...I won't act on how turned on I get by anything I see. Okay...I might touch a little, but just to see where you have sensation and where you don't because you still haven't told me yet.
Tea: This isn't the time for us to discuss this.
Todd: I can tell your brother to get lost.
Tea: I told you earlier, I want to spend time with him while he's here. He has to go back to work soon. You'll have me all to yourself after he leaves.
Todd: When I really do have you all to myself, when we find a place to live, I'll need to know how to do stuff for you, right? You should just show me now and get it over with.
Tea: Okay.
Todd: Really?
Tea: I'm tired of fighting. Just remember that my brother is right outside so let's keep this appropriate.
Todd: Define appropriate.
Tea: You know exactly what I'm referring to. Just help me change and leave it at that. Can you do that?
Todd: I'm not gonna jump you, Tea.
Tea: I know you'll be a gentleman.
Todd: After I find us a place, though...
Tea: Todd, I might not be ready to be intimate for a long time.
Todd: So, you can do it, you just don't want to?
Tea: We'll talk about this more fully another time, a time when one of my brothers isn't standing outside the door. You need to understand, though, that right now I'm not ready for that.
Todd: Are you at least ready to admit that you will be living with me again?
Tea: We shouldn't jump into this so fast. We did that the last time, remember? That was a disaster.
Todd: I remember some good times.
Tea: So do I. I also remember some horrible times. And, we ended up apart again, do you remember that? We need to think before we jump into this relationship again. And, there are a lot of things that we need to discuss.
Todd: Just tell me that you want to live with me again. You can torture me later with all the talking.
Tea: I will live with you again.
Todd (smiling): I knew you would.
Tea: If...
[Todd's smile disappears, concerned about what conditions Tea will place on their being together.]
