Real Killers (1997)

Plot Summary: Christmas Eve, a few years ago, Kyle (David Gunn) and Odessa James put on some scary face paint, brought out their shotguns, and shot their parents to death. Despite pleading that their parents abused and molested them, they were sent to prison for a very long time. However, one dark and stormy night, the brothers grim decided to break out of jail and take some nice family hostage so they could lay low in the suburbs for a while. However, the members of the family they take hostage are not at all what they appear to be.

Personal Review: : (I’ll try to do this without giving away too much. However if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll probably find this review more humorous.) While I wasn’t incredibly impressed with this film, I did find it interesting. It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. The plot twists do their jobs well. However, I think this would’ve made a better book than movie. There are a lot of ranting monologues from each of the characters which are interesting and thought-provoking, but lets face it folks, people just don’t talk like that. They were a bit poetic for the average person to spew out. Another complaint I have about the movie is that there are several things that just aren’t explained (like Bob…wtf was up with Bob? And the bottom-dwellers…or whatever they were called…maybe they were the Visa repo men…). Also (not to be too negative or anything), most of the attempts at character development kinda fell short.

But the movie wasn’t all bad. It was entertaining to watch (just don’t think too deeply about it). The acting was pretty good (with the exception of the man playing the father of the family…overacting is a bad thing). And the mother of the family was named Rae (also my name), so the movie gained points right there :-). David had quite a few quality scenes (my personal favorite was where David’s character, Kyle, is picking through and thoroughly insulting the family’s video collection). If you’re looking for a slightly morbid movie, but you aren’t really in the mood to think a lot, then this is the movie for you (or if you’re like me and just saw it because David was in it…that works too).

Availability: "Real Killers" can be rented on VHS at most local video stores (except maybe Blockbuster and some Hollywood Videos because they usually won't carry unrated titles).

Random Tidbits:
· The film was directed by Mike Mendez, who also directed David’s latest movie, "The Convent"
· David’s a blond in this one (as opposed to the brown hair of "Vampire Journals" and "The Convent")
· David has a sex scene in this movie (and yes ladies, there are a few butt shots Whoo Hoo!)
