“I can’t believe you are graduating,” I told my friend Liz.
We were at her college campus, and she was all decked out for the ceremony.
“Neither can I,” she replied tearfully. “College went too fast, but at least I still have law school to go through.”
“Yeah, and I will be at that graduation too,” I assured, giving her a hug. “Now wipe those tears off your face, I have a secret to tell you.”
“Am I gonna be happy? Because if not, don’t tell me for a few weeks.”
“You’ll be excited, and happy,” I assured her. “Do you remember when I talked to you on the phone a few months ago, and I was saying something to the effect of, Nicole don’t you tell a soul about what just happened! and she was whining in the background about that?”
“Yeah, and then every time I talked to you for a month I wanted to know what you were talking about,” she chuckled.
“Well, it has to do with the Backstreet Boys.”
“Speak,” she commanded, excited at the mention of her favorite band.
“Alright,” I took a deep breath, “They were at my house for a weekend.”
“No, seriously, what were you gonna tell me?”
“That, and I mean it. I also have to tell you a little something about a certain person in the crowd watching you graduate…”
“What?!!” she shrieked, causing about 10 people to turn around and give her strange looks. She turned bright red, and her freckles stood out even more on her face. “Which one?”
“Who do you think I would invite to your graduation? In other words remind me who you love the most,” I prodded.
“Brian,” she said as calmly as she could, barely containing her energy.
I just nodded, and pointed to my parents, “See the person in the white baseball cap sitting next to my mom? There he is.”
“Oh my God!! I love you Robin!” she yelled as she grabbed my arms and shook me, not caring who looked at her this time.
“And eight of us are going out to dinner together after this,” I explained.
“8?” “You, me, all five of them and Nicole. I couldn’t very well invite them somewhere and not her.” I said knowing Liz was still a little confused. “She talks to them all the time online, and there are those among them who can’t keep a secret, so it would get around to her somehow, and I don’t want her mad at me.”
“OK! Whatever,” she said soaking in the fact that the Brian was at her graduation.
