The Lakers, a professional basketball team, came into existence in 1948. At the time, they were the Minneapolis Lakers and played their home games in Minnesota, which lies in the Great Lakes region, thus explaining the team's name.

After playing in Minneapolis for twelve seasons, the Lakers moved their franchise to Los Angeles in 1960. The 2002-03 season will be their 43rd in Southern California.

During their 54-year history, the Lakers have won fourteen championships--five in Minneapolis and nine in Los Angeles.

Kobe Bryant and Shaq O’Neal are the first teammates to be named All-NBA First Team in consecutive seasons since Utah’s Karl Malone and John Stockton did it in 1993-94 and 1994-95. Bryant finished the season ranked second in the NBA with a career-high 30.0 points per game. He also posted career-highs in rebounds (6.9 rpg) and assists (5.9 apg) as he played in all 82 regular season games. Bryant scored 40 or more points in nine consecutive games (February 6-23) and became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 10,000 point plateau on March 5th. He has been named to the All-NBA First Team twice (2002, 2003), Second Team twice (2000, 2001) and Third Team once during his career (1999). O’Neal was named All-NBA First Team for the fourth consecutive season and fifth time in his career. He finished the season second in field goal percentage (.574) and fourth in scoring (27.5 ppg ). He also averaged 11.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
