The SSA signs an agreement to reduce publicity in the mass media, and the discourage the commercialization of tobacco.

 

  • Since January 2004, the cigarette factory will eliminate publicity on radio and television, will not sponsor musical or sportive events, and also they will restrict the publicity in print medias or exterior publicity.

 

  • The packet of cigarettes will wear a warning of the tobacco consumption risks which is equivalent to the 25 percent of space in the back side of the package.

 

  • In the presence of the SSA holder, doctor Julio Frenk Mora, the dependence and the cigarette factory with the pharmaceutical they both agreed specific actions to reduce and prevent the consumption of tobacco.

 

The Secretaria de Salud and Phillip Morris signed today an agreement through which they suspend the publicity on radio, television, and internet since January 2004, and they also agreed that the exterior publicity, in magazines and newspapers the same way as promotion of musical and sportive events. Besides incorporating warnings and information that could guide the smokers to some treatment against smoking habit  in the cigarettes package.

 

The ones that signed were the Consejo Nacional Contra las Adicciones (CONACID)and the Comision Federal para la Proteccion contra Riesgos Sanitarios; Cigarrera La moderna, Philip Morris Mexico, Cigarros La Tabacalera Mexicana, and the Consejo Nacional de la Industria Tabacalera.

 

Likewise the Secretaria de Salud signed an harmonizing agreement  with the Asociacion Nacional de Farmacias de Mexico (Anafarmex) an the Union de Propietarios de Farmacias de la Republica Mexicana (Uprofarm) to start a advertising campaign to reduce the smoke habit in Mexico.

 

This additional restrictions of regulation to the publicity, commercialization, and warnings about tobacco products, was agreed as an effort by the federal government to control smoke habit, because of its impact of deaths in Mexico, also because it represents half a point of the Producto Interno Bruto in spent the attention of smoke habit sickness.

 

Also the publicity restrictions, since June 2003, will incorporate the warning that is equivalent to the 25% of the back side of a cigarette package, in addition of the ones that were appearing before at the side of the package.

 

The agreement contains actions to prevent the free access of minors in the consumption of tobacco, in which the fabricants are committed to the cause of no sponsoring events that could be catching the minors' attention. And there can not be appearing famous stars of less than 25 years old smoking.

 

The publicity restrictions say they won't be able to presume that athletic, professional or sexual success have something to do with the tobacco consumption.
