Mike Dear 1933-99

In the mid 1950's there was a minor coterie of undergrads at TCD comprising Gerald (Teddy)Bayne(TED), John Connor(JC), Mike Dear(MAGD), Brian Kidd(EBSK), and Mick Mahood(MM) all were engineers except JC. JC, EBSK, and MM lived in the same set of college rooms in Botany Bay-Ted and MAGD availed of these rooms for routine convenience purposes -dumping, crashing, just sitting around! All, except MAGD, had come up from Portora and had significant Irish roots. On graduation the members of the coterie pursued their separate interests though all maintained a degree of liaison, often tenuous, except MAGD. Ted went `engineering'-Canadair Montreal, Boeing Seattle, Dowty Cheltenham and Malta, skippering yachts on the Med before retiring to the Cote d'Azur ; JC spent forty-one years as a university professor of economics based in Nova Scotia with secondments to Rhode Island, Dublin, Paris, Edinburgh, Forestry Commission, Oxford, and Strathclyde; EBSK engineered municipally in N.I., the RAF in Africa, Crown Agents in London and Kuala Lumpur and finally as a consultant in Africa, MM joined the RCAF, covered construction matters for insurance corp(s). before managing computers in Toronto. Only one survived matrimony without marital friction leading to divorce.
