Windsor is perhaps best known for its
castle, official royal residence over 900 years old. To the south of the castle
is Windsor Great Park, which extends over 5000 acres (2000 hectares) and includes
Virginia Water Lake. On the west side of the castle is the town of Windsor. From
the statue of Queen Victoria it's possible to follow the castle walls downhill
to the River Thames and cross into Eton. Around 3 miles / 5km south-east of Windsor,
between Egham and Englefield Green, is Coopers Hill, Runnymede. At the top of
the hill (approached from Englefield Green) is the Airforce memorial. At the foot
of the hill are two further memorials: the Magna Carta memorial, commemorating
the site where in June 1215 King John signed "the earliest of constitutional documents".
A memorial to John F Kennedy, which stands in an acre of land given to the
US by the UK.
