F. None (2003) Telephone Conversations
Calls made on June 16, 2003 to
The office of Senator Jeff Sessions (202) 224 - 4124
The office of Congressman Butch Otter (202) 255 - 6611
The office of Congressman John Culberson (202) 255 - 2571
I found these phone numbers on the lawmakers’ homepages. I
called
them and left messages with their secretaries, they couldn’t give me a
response right away because they had to ask the right people so their
responses could be nice and polished. Only one person called me back
even
though I told them it was for a school report . I learned that
Congressman John Culberson would most likely support the bill.
V. Thesis and Outlined Argument
A. Thesis
- Senator Jeff Sessions, Congressman Butch Otter and
Congressman
John Culberson should all vote yes on the Emergency Agricultural Disaster
Assistance Act of 2003.
- The Emergency Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act of 2003 will
help protect the nation’s agricultural producers.
B. Argument
- The Emergency Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act of 2003 would
provide emergency disaster assistance to agricultural producers.
- If something were to happen that would affect the nation’s
agriculture, this bill would help by assisting the affected
producers so that the production of food could continue.
- If something were to happen to the nation’s agriculture that would
stop or slow food production the economy would suffer.
- If something were to happen to the nation’s agriculture that would
stop or slow food production, food prices would rise and many
people
could go hungry.
- This bill should be passed because it would protect the nation and
the economy at the same time by protecting the agricultural
producers.
- Senator Jeff Sessions, Congressman Butch Otter and Congressman
John Culberson all represent and live in states that have agriculture
as
a major industry.
- Senator Jeff Sessions, Congressman Butch Otter and Congressman
John Culberson should vote yes on this bill because it would help
their
states in an agricultural emergency disaster.
- During the dust bowl agricultural production slowed and there were
food shortages. If the agricultural producers had been assisted,
the
food production could have resumed faster and there would have been
less
food shortages.
C. Character Metaphors
- Úrsula Iguarán would most likely vote no on this bill. She isn’t
open to new ideas and feels that
everyone can deal with it themselves
and the stronger will survive. She also feels that if the government
gave aid to one group of people everyone would want aid for their
problems. This is the wrong course of action in that not passing this
bill could endanger the whole nation.
- The Gypsy trader would most likely vote yes on this bill. He is
open to new ideas and after reviewing
it and thinking it over would
realize that this bill would benefit the whole nation. This is the
right
course of action in that the bill would protect the
whole nation.
- José Arcadio Buendía would most likely vote yes on this bill but for
all the wrong reasons. He would vote
yes on this bill because it looked
good on paper, not because he thought
it through and
realized it was the right decision. This would be
both the right and
wrong course of action, right because he would pass the bill that
would
benefit the whole nation and wrong
because he wouldn’t look into it.
