How I Wonder What You Are

********************************************************************************

"That stupid, ignorant, self-absorbed little....!!!"

Sarah threw a pillow against the wall and groaned as the wall it's self threw it back at her.

(Great, of course even the walls would have to have ears here.) She thought

This was the fifth big " arguement of wits" as the King put it, she had had with him in her three days since coming to his land. Sarah just didn't understand.

She was usually such a clam girl, how was it this king,

(the little over dressed, self proclaimed master of the world worm that he was)

always mangled to get her up in arms over the littlest things?

Sarah wondered secretly if this was what it felt like to be married.

(Lord help me if I ever have feelings for that..that..!!) She threw a lamp across the room and heard it break with satisfying crash. Down the halls, Sarah could hear Toby's crying from being awoken from his afternoon nap.

(Oops...) Sarah thought guiltily (Sorry Toby..)

She hubbed her head trying to ward off a headache that threatened to over come her.

What was to become of the two them here in a castle full of goblins ruled over by such a king?

********************************************************************************

In the audience chamber the young king smiled half heartily at his small victory other the human girl.

(Soon, soon she will learn her place)

He thought

(And it will not be to rule over or influence any of my actions that is for certain!)

He leaned back and mentally tallied his winnings.

One step closer, he figured, to turning the human into a goblin....

A wave of dizziness suddenly hit his body like a storm.

The same storm he had been trying to fight down in the back of his mind for the last couple days.

Jareth clutched his amulet, a look of pain crossing his face.

"Master!" His ever loyal ban of mini goblins chorused.

"Are you well?" "Are you ill?"

"Are you okay?" "Need a pill?"

"What's wrong master?"

"Nothing." Jareth hissed with a gasp, literally lying through his teeth as he let go of the amulet.

It fell once again onto his bare skin still beating in his sensitive ears like a second heart beat.

"Nothing..you saw nothing at all..right?" He spoke with hidden meaning beneath this words.

"Oh...of course." "Saw nothing"

"Was nothing." "Saw less.."

"No, mindless beasts..."

A sudden voice thundered inside and out of every mind in the room.

"What you saw is the eternal downfall of your king..."

Jareth's mismatched eyes grew wide with recollection.

He had only heard that same voice once in his many ages of life,

but that was all that was needed to set her name on his lips like a hot knife in butter.

"Obsidian..." He whispered

*******************************************************************************

The little gang of goblins that had sat around their king now headed to down a passage away of the chamber in a blur of fear and mummer...

*******************************************************************************

Sarah was trying without much success to claim Toby down and back to sleep.

He looked, she decided, like a little goblin ragamuffin:

The baby wore a goat skin cap decorated with multi colored chicken feathers, and a sheep skin diaper with a leather diaper cover other it, woven with what looked to be the finest bead work of stenciled suns and moons done in blue and silver by the females of the goblin clan that lived in the castle.

"You seem right a home here don't you?" She asked the baby thoughtfully

"I wish I had you faith Toby but that king...huh?"

Sarah stopped mid thought as she saw the air around little Toby start to glitter.

With a golden glow, much to her surprise, a tiny gold amulet on a golden chain appeared around Toby's neck and laid dull golden against his bear chest.

Sarah squinted.

The symbol on the tiny fingernail sized circle was hard to see

but she could just make out the shape of an lemniscate formed of many coils...

The exact same type of amulet she'd always saw around Jareth's neck!

She had a very good idea he must be behind it,

but for some reason she couldn't find the heart to be mad.

(It's so pretty..)

But the Goblin King seemed never without it...what could this mean?

A that moment, an very out of breath group of goblins

Sarah recognized as Jareth right hand throne washers suddenly appeared.

They all gathered 'round her, tugging at her bouse all at the same time like overlooked toddlers.

"Human girl Sarah!" "Human girl and baby human!"

"King need help!" "Bad evil thing come!"

"Our king needs your help!"

"Yes, help,help,help,help,help,help,HELP!"

Sarah sighed to herself

(If there's one thing HE needs it's a roll of duct tape!)

She had learned in her short time here that goblins as a whole seemed to really make mountains out of molehills.

"All right, all right I'm coming.."

She said humoring them the best she could.

Toby seemed all too happy to see what all of the noise was about so Sarah decided to bring him along.

As soon as she came round the corder however she didn't even have time to scream.

A dragon, nearly five times bigger than herself with scales the color of bright ruby

clamped one clawed forefoot across her mouth and the other across her chest, pining Toby to her.

The baby let out a howl of outrage and pain as Sarah was forced to walk at the dragon's mercy into the audience room.

The first sight she saw made her blood run cold...

********************************************************************************

Even though he was forced to his knees by a magic rope the bound his wrists and ankles Jareth remained proud.

He looked defiantly with a glare of hatred at the ruby eyes of the beast that held a single fore claw, nearly the size and width of half a full grown man, directly under his chin.

"I could easily be done with your foul preside here and now wizard fae lord..."

Jareth smiled "Than why don't you?"

Obsidian hissed and the young king laughed

"I will tell you why, you are bound to the laws of this land, as are all creatures in it..the laws my father.."

"Your father was a fool."

The dragon spat

"He locked away myself and my children for hundreds of years!

Imagine my beauty condemned to darkness?!?"

Obsidian took her claw from Jareth's skin and roared up onto her hind legs:

Her golden scales shined in the dim light of the room and her silver claws crashed together like warring swords in her fury, eyes glowing blood red as she craned her

neck up and let out a jet of flame toward the castles stone.

"Am I not a wonder?"

She spoke in an commanding rumble, bringing her head down again until her nose was nearly touching Jareth's face.

"A wonder like death."

He replied dryly

********************************************************************************

Sarah eyes widened from where she was off at the sidelines, her mouth still gaged by the dragons paw.

(What is he trying to do, to get himself killed?!)

She thought in fear and agar

He may have been a untold nuisance to her, but he didn't deserve his head ripped off!

She glance around the room looking for an escape route but the room seemed full to it's limit with nearly two hundred and fifty dragons of every size and rue.

They were all dwarfed by the one she had heard called Obsidian that held Jareth captive though.

She considered biting the dragon that held her to make him let go, but decided against it.

It's scales looked too hard for her to do any real damage and even if he let go where was there to run? Plus, with Toby's safety to think of...

(I wish, I wish I could do something!)

Sarah thought, feeling useless and trapped all at once.

Sarah rearrange her hold on Toby absent-mindedly so he wouldn't fall.

The dragon holding them felt the slit movement and tightened his grip even more like lightening. Sarah gasped and Toby let out a scream that proved so lound it stared the dragon into easing his hold again.

The baby's outburst didn't go unnoticed however.

The huge golden she dragon turned her head sharply and Sarah felt the ages old ruby eyes sharing holes into her thoughts.

"Aw yes, the human girl..." Obsidian chuckled

"Sarah!?"

She heard the young king's voice say in surprise some ways away as if this was the first time he'd noticed her here.

"

Yes..."Sarah" is it?"

The golden dragon hissed at her

"It when be such a shame for your life to end here. Still so young and full of life..."

Obsidian held a claw half heartily up to Sarah's troat. The steamy breath of the beast was very like standing too close to an open fire and made Sarah's eyes burn.

Though she was trying to be brave she felt her whole body sacking involuntarily.

"Get her alone! It's my kin you have a score to settle with, she has nothing with you!"

The voice of Jareth rang out, for once welcome in Sarah's ears.

Obsidian turned her muzzle away from her and Sarah heaved in air. She hadn't realized she'd been holding her breath.

"You father was a fool, and so it is with you. Such a fool to take a human mate!"

Sarah's eyes widened.

"She is not my mate!" Jareth shoot back immediately

Sarah managed a disgusted sounding

"MUTPS?!" Though the dragon's paw.

(Me and that..that king MATES?! That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!)

Sarah thought with vigor.

Obsidian lifted up her head back over to Jareth and laughed.

"Such a well matched pair indeed! You fae were never much for lying..There, in her arms"

Sarah felt herself being pointed at from afar

"Your love's fruit, and nearly a year old at that!"

Sarah looked puzzled and looked down at Toby

(Love's fruit? What...)

She looked up at the dragon

(..Does she mean?..)

She looked down at Toby again

(..She thinks Toby is...)

She looked up a Jareth this time

(..and she thinks Jareth and I...)

Her face felt hot with rage and embarrassment as what Obsidian had said finally registered.

(Of all the nerve!)

********************************************************************************

Though he had been frightened at first that fear had loosened a bit at the accusing remarks of this High Queen of beasts. Breaking into and seizing his kingdom was one thing, but calling that lound mouth human his mate? Unthinkable!

"Enough of this senseless lying chatter!" Obsidian roared to his face "Where is thee amulet fae lord?"

Jareth tried to remain emotionless as he had been before, but a telltale smirk threatened to shine on his face clear as day. She didn't know!

"What amulet? I've never heard of such a thing..."

"Don't play smart with me! Your families magic tool is as clearly passed down as a birthmark.."

"I lost it...some time ago" Jareth lied as his eyes scanned the crowd of dragons

(I only hope toughs bumblers for once got their magic straight...)

******************************************************************************

Sarah felt the king's gaze dart toward her and froze.

Though their eyes locked barely a moment, not even time enough for the dragon's keen senses to notice, it seemed an enturnty to her.

Sarah had never seen his eyes so clear and focused before...then she understood!

The amulet 'round Toby's neck...was his!

She prayed no one else was looking at her right then, for she was sure her own eyes would have given it all away.

(But why would he...) Sarah started to wonder but was cut short by the giant dragons whisper...

"Is that so?" Sarah heard her ask dangerously of Jareth

"I am not one without compassion fae lord..."

Sarah shivered at the icy tone of the dragon's "gentleness".

"... so I stall have a contest of the sort your father ruled:

You stall have thirteen days starting this night at 13 o' clock to make your way past the upper world wilds back to this castle. Then, and only then if you are able to slay all against you save myself will you win back your kingdom and your power...If you should lose however you will surrender the amulet and become my...personal.. slave..."

Sarah could see Jareth's eyes burn with fury at being helpless to agree to those demands.

(Thirteen hours? That's impossible! With twelve hours in a day..but thirteen? 26 hours?!?)

She thought, wishing she had payed more mind to the castle clocks.

Then again, nothing was impossible here, it seemed...

******************************************************************************

".then if you don't give it to me willingly..."The dragon flicked out her tongue and licked it's hardwood it surface against the king's forehead, leaving it pink and raw.

Jareth cried out and bent down his head to his chest in knee jerk reaction.

The dragon's laugh rang out

"It's been such a long time since I last tasted fae flesh..."

Somewhere, far off, he though he heard a gasp from Sarah and many squeals of goblin voices.

But, he mind was in fact half far away in memories of long ago Obsidian's last words rang bitter and cold over and over again as he lost consciousness.

::Fae flesh...Fae flesh..fae flesh..flesh..blood..

Mama?..Papa? Why did you go away?

It's so hot here, I can't see the sun anymore, the music's gone Mama...it's all gone..::
