Gwenhwyfar felt a kind of triumphant despair as the last egg hatched and Impressed. She was still there, and there were no more eggs. I knew I would never Impress! she told herself. All this junk about being a candidate, getting her hopes up...
One of the mothers of the clutch fluttered down to the sands, uncovering several eggs that had been buried. Gwenhwyfar could hear the recordkeepers rummaging for their writing implements, and smiled. A single long crack appeared down the center of one of the eggs, and brilliant blue nose poked out, sniffing. The hatchling broke his shell in two neatly and stood up to dry his translucent wings.
Oh, he is so beautiful... Gwenhwyfar's mind involuntarily thought, as the dragonet raised his head and looked around. He took a confident step towards his chosen. He can't be coming....for me?
Gwen watched silently as the little blue stumbled, just as quietly, to her. Gwen, I am Lueth. And I forgive you. I hope we never make another mistake, but...that was all it was. I would never be with anyone who wanted to kill someone. That is wrong! But you did not mean to take a life. And remember, now you and I will be saving them! I have learned a lot while in the shell, and I know we are here to fight Thread, not people! came the ringing announcement. Gwenhwyfar almost fell down as she embraced her dragon. "Oh Lueth! I know you're right...it's so hard...I didn't mean to..." she gulped between sobs. Lueth nuzzled her hair and crooned.
If you're done remembering, my rider, I will kindly thank you to give me that firestone you're holding... Lueth's acerbic voice snapped Gwen out of her memories.
The young woman chuckled and fed her blue the demanded 'stone, picking up another largish lump. Lueth swallowed the chewed fragments and plucked the next piece from his rider's hand, the dragon equivalent of a smile revealing his teeth.
"Done?" his rider inquired, just as the dragon announced that he had had enough firestone. Grinning, Gwenhwyfar vaulted onto the bright blue neck, settling between two neckridges and telling Lueth to lift off. She could feel the bunching of the great hindleg muscles a moment before they sprang into the air.
Lueth hovered, his wingspan as wide as that of a brown, while they waited for the rest of the wing to get airborne. Gwenhwyfar craned her neck to watch for the Wingleader's signal to go between. She could feel the tense alertness that always preceded Threadfall.
We go! Lueth cried, winking into frigid between and reappearing in the skies above a heavily forested area. Thread was upon them a heartbeat later. The big blue wove about the sky, flaming, always keeping near his position in the wing. Gwenhwyfar felt a surge of pride for her magnificent lifemate as the wind blew past her face.
It seemed like a lifetime later when the Trailing Edge passed them, falling harmlessly into the sea. The wings stayed in the air for a minute, watching, before teleporting back to the Weyr. Gwen could feel her dragon's fatigue through their bond, and rubbed Lueth's warm neck sympathetically. I'll give you a nice bath and then you can sleep, Lu. she promised lovingly. The blue warbled appreciatively as they landed, turning his great head back to regard his rider solemnly. I would like that. he remarked absently, if dragons can sound absent.
