. . . . . . . Insertion / Activation

Textbook Needle Insertion
Central Channel Access Acupoints

From the "Essentials" - The global standard for acupoint location :

Ren 19 is punctured horizontally 0.3-0.5 inch.
- - - (Essentials of Chinese Acupuncture, 1st ed., 1980).

Ren 6 is punctured perpendicularly 0.8-1.2 inches.
- - - (Essentials of Chinese Acupuncture, 1st ed., 1980).

Ren 12 is punctured perpendicularly 1.0-1.5 inches.
- - - (Essentials of Chinese Acupuncture, 1st ed., 1980).

Clinical Needle Insertion
Central Channel Access Acupoints

From "Shanghai" - Acupuncture - A Comprehensive Text, Eastland Press, 1983
. . . . . . . . . The "other" global standard :

Ren 19

Co-19 (Chest-Zigong) "Purple Palace"

Location: Level with the 2nd intercostal space.

Method: Slanted insertion, 0.5-1 unit.

Additional information about this (minor) point is non-existent in the Shanghai text.

Ren 6

Co-6 (Qihai) "Sea of Qi"

Location: 1.5 units directly below the navel.

Anatomy: Supplied by branches of the superficial and inferior epigastric arteries and veins and by a medial, anterior cutaneous branch of the eleventh intercostal nerve.

Traditional functions: Regulates the Qi functions, strengthens Deficient Kidneys.

Needling method: Slanted insertion, pointed downward, 2-3 units.

Sensation: local distension and soreness possibly extending into the genital region.

CAUTION: Do not needle or use moxibustion at this point on pregnant women. When the bladder is full, do not insert the needle downward too deeply.

Ren 12

Co-12 (Zhongwan) "Middle Cavity"

Location: 4 units directly above the navel.

Anatomy: Supplied by the superior epigastric artery and vein, and by a medial, anterior cutaneous branch of the seventh intercostal nerve (in the pyloric region of the stomach).

Traditional functions: Regulates the Stomach Qi, transforms and suppresses rebellious Qi.

Needling method: Straight insertion, 1-2 units, or the needle may be inserted at a slant in all directions around the point.

Sensation: a heavy, distended feeling in the upper abdomen, or a feeling of contraction in the stomach region.

CAUTION: Because of the location of the stomach, pancreas, and abdominal aorta in the deep position beneath this point, caution must be exercised to avoid an excessively deep insertion. This is particularly the case when treating thin patients. Furthermore, when needling patients who have an enlarged liver or spleen, a slanted insertion of the needle in a direction to the left or right of the point is strongly discouraged.

Remarks: Point of intersection of the Small Intestine, Triple Burner and Stomach channels on the Conception channel.

Energetic Point Activation
Central Channel Access Acupoints

We are looking to stimulate the access points for the Shen, the Jing, and the Qi.

This can be done through the insertion of needles, by the application of non-needle electroacupuncture, or with moxibustion, or though energetic projection via Qi Gong, or some similar method.
