TRAINING OF THE RIDER

"The rider must be firm, he must be in command, but he must not be cruel. That is stupid. We do not indulge in great whips and special spurs and devilish bit. We remember the words of old Gueriniere, the 18th-century riding master who said, 'The more iron in the mouth of the horse less the knowledge of the rider.'" -Colonel Podhajsky

The Training of Eleves

Requirements of entry as an eleve

The eleves (a.k.a. riders in training) have to be 15-16 years old before they can even apply as an eleve for the school. They must have a small, athletic build. Only men are allowed to be a rider or work with the horses at all.

Average length of time to become a Rider

The total training lasts approx. 10 years, and the time is spent being an eleve (first 5 years), and a Carpet Rider.

Drop out quota

After 2 years studies have shown that about half of the students will end up dropping out. The selection process is extremely tough to become a Rider. If the eleve hasn't developed enough they are required to leave.
