End Of An Era

The cavern in hell was dark and desolate. The walls were smooth and glassy looking and the screams of mens souls could be heard as they were trapped in them. All around was pain and suffering for the damned, those who gave up their souls long ago.

Against a rock sat a tall and powerful warrior, a warrior who wanted nothing more than to be left alone with his loved one. He had come to hell to save her soul from being damned. She gave up her soul to be with her loved one, was that so wrong? Did love not conquer all? Who among man would not sacrifice their own soul for that perfect love.

Standing near the holy warrior stood Death. The entity depicted as evil or uncaring. Perhaps it was true or perhaps he did care. Maybe his heart had no bounds. Maybe after every life he took he wondered what it was he was doing as all people do. Maybe he thought that his taking of life was a salvation, taking them away from their pitiful dull existence. Good or bad, he was merely the messanger, the bringer of bad news.

"I had hoped to beat you Cedrick, to leave my life as the bringer of death. But you have won and you deserve your answer in your quest for Christa." Death said in his hollow voice.

"Our paths are not all that strange Death. We both have jobs we must do that only come through the pain and suffering of others." said Cedrick, looking into Deaths hollow eyes, searching for his soul.

"You have won Cedrick, I must tell you all you want to know, ask me your questions for I hear the calling of death." he said looking away.

"How can save Christa's soul?" asked the warrior solemnly.

Death looked grim, grimer than he had looked through this entire ordeal. "Their is no way to save her soul. Her judgement has been done." he said, his voice almost having a human sorrow in it.

The warrior known as Cedrick looked shocked and sorrowful. "What..what was her judgement?" he asked, his voice trembling.

Deaths eyes peered past Cedrick, as if he were reading Cedricks soul. "She is in neither hell nor heaven. Her soul is in purgatory, to forever wander alone. I am ...sorry Cedrick." he said, looking away.

The warrior stood looking down, his eyes sorrowful as he took in all the tragic information. He could wage a war in either heaven or hell but it wouldn’t matter. Christa would still be in her abyss of loneliness for eternity. After everything he had seen and done, all he wanted to be was with Christa. At that moment he realized that his quest was at an end, their was nothing that he could do to save her soul from her fate. Her judgement was done.

The warrior looked up at Death, his eyes filled with tears. “Death” he spoke sorrowfully, “I have one more request from you”.

“I know Cedrick, it shall be done.” Said Death his voice echoing.

“Thank you”. With that Cedrick rapidly grabbed his sword, turning it swiftly and than plunging it into his own heart. He fell to his knees, the blade sticking out his chest. His eyes grew wide at the pain, but the pain did not even come close to what he actually felt. He grabbed the hilt, pushing it deeper and deeper as the other end of the blade struck through his back. He looked up at death, blood oozing from his mouth. His eyes twitching and fluttering, “Goo..d…bye, my frie..nds.” he said in a gurgled voice. Death glided towards him, touching his forehead with a bony finger. With that single touch, the life of Cedrick was gone, gone in a flash. No longer would he walk the world, no longer would he fight or feel pain. For him, this death was not a curse, but a blessing, an end to all his pain. As Death pulled away his finger, Cedrick slumped forward, falling. The blade, glistening with blood stuck out from his back.

“Your legacy will live for eternity Cedrick, you will not be easily forgotten. The man that has saved the world countless times, the man that was a hero, but most of all, the man that was human.” Said Death, standing above Cedricks lifeless body. “Go with her, be with her now, for all eternity. Now you are free.” Said Death, fading away, to do his duty. On his face that was a human skull fell a tear, streaming down from the man with no sympathy.

Death gazed out, his sight seeing into souls and other realms. For a short glimpse his eyes caught a sight that would stay in his soul forever. He saw the tall and powerful warrior known as Cedrick, standing next to the angelic beauty of Christa. They held hands as they both walked into their abyss of darkness, no longer would they be alone, no longer would they be separated, now they would spend eternity together, with their undying love.
