NANZENJI - JAPAN


Zuiryusan Nanzenji located at the foot of the Hiagshiyama Hills in Kyoto, Japan is a Zen Buddhist temple . Emperor Kameyama established it in 1291 on the site of his previous detached palace. Nanzenji is one of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto. Nanzenji ( means "Southern Zen Temple") is the head temple of Nanzenji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Most building were destroyed during 15th century in Onin Wars. The present structures only dates from 17th century. The major attraction are the rock gardens and fusuma paintings in the Seiryo-den. A seated statue (an Important Cultural Property) of the retired emperor is housed in the Mitama-den. Sliding screen paintings are attributed to the Kano School. The garden registered as a Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty was constructed by retired emperor Kameyama and completed by Zen master Muso Soseki. It is the only garden in Kyoto having its origin in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) .
